  1. I understand and fully support people’s desire to honor the life and accomplishments of artists whom they love and admire by noting the day on which they were born. But wishing "Happy Birthday" to someone who is deceased sounds very wrong to my ears. First of all, there’s the obvious: the person is dead, and as such they stopped having “birthdays” once they are no longer living. For the life of me, I can't imagine saying "Happy Birthday, Dad" next April 5th, when in fact my father passed away last May. A birthday and a birthdate are not the same thing. One can most certainly celebrate the anniversary of a departed person’s birth. Take for example Cab Calloway, who was born December 25, 1907. I could say “Tomorrow would have been Cab Calloway’s 110th birthday", or "Tomorrow is the 110th anniversary of Calloway’s birth”. Not only are these statements more “correct”, I think they also set a more sincere or respectful tone to the message being offered. Don’t get me wrong. I like the threads that are created on these occasions. It serves as a reminder of an artist’s contributions to the music I love. Like many of you, the thread makes me want to listen to the artist’s recordings, often with a renewed sense of respect and gratitude. So, what say you, my soulful and swinging brethren?
  2. This brings to mind the horrible digital-only reissue series by Nagel-Heyer that's been criticized here before: previous discussion
  3. You can even gift it!
  4. I had the great honor to hear Mr. Pickens play on several occasions, and to speak with him once or twice during my visits to Chicago. A wonderful musician and a nice man. If you've never heard his Christmas album and his two recordings of spirituals, please do seek them out. R.I.P. dear sir, and thank you so very much.
  5. Thank you very much for this. There's nothing wrong with positive vibes and best wishes, but they don't do a heck of a lot for Barry. On the other hand, a humorous card with a heartfelt message can mean a lot.
  6. First time all year!
  7. Yes Kevin, it's the different shots of Lee that I noticed. In the original, he's like, "Oh, hey there," but in the reissue he's more like, "Saaay Whhhaaatttt?"
  8. Just read that Partridge Family star and 70's teen heartthrob passed away at age 67. He had suffered medical and emotional problems in his later years, including addiction, divorce, bankruptcy and early dementia. Thankfully, his suffering is now over. https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/david-cassidy-1970s-teen-idol-has-died-n822426
  9. I never noticed before the difference between the original cover and later reissues. Do you see what I see?
  10. To each his own. I've only purchased a handful of CDs in the past few years. I just close my eyes and listen to the music. It matters not the medium that delivers it.
  11. No problem! Mr. Wizard to the rescue!
  12. Download it at various sites for $5-$10. Burn it if you must. Enjoy the music. Problem solved.
  13. Yeah. Those things are often hit or miss.
  14. A very thoughtful and substantive response. Thanks for sharing ep1str0phy.
  15. It's very important for men to have these discussions, ugly or not. If it makes you uncomfortable, then by all means don't read it, but don't try to dissuade others from doing so.
  16. Why the vague title? Why not "Berklee Teachers Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Students? Sad to hear that Greg Osby is among those identified in the article. Sadder still is Osby's sexist defense against the charge: "Bottom line is, and this is a bit harsh, if anyone saw my girlfriend at that time and saw [his Berklee accuser] that would probably end the argument,” Osby said. “Why would I jeopardize my career for somebody like that?”" Btw, the link works.
  17. Yes, A-Gon was at tonight's game, and he plans to be there for the remainder of the series. What a great game!
