  1. It will be released on the Engine Studios label. Their catalog of CDs and downloads is available on BandCamp (a personal favorite of mine), CDBaby, and most of the majors. Check out some of their other offerings, including titles by Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan, Warren Smith, Andrew Lamb, and William Hooker with Sabir Mateen: Engine Studios
  2. Just saw this new release on Bandcamp. The quintet includes some artists that I've been diggin' lately, most notably Russ Lossing on electric piano and Samuel Blaser on trombone. Give it a listen: One From None
  3. Hill's performance was supposed to feature a reunion with Bobby Hutcherson and Richard Davis. Instead, his sextet included Ron Horton, Marty Ehrlich, Aaron Stewart, Scott Colley, and Nasheet Waits, with Vonski as a special guest. Sorry, but I don't have any additional information about the tunes played. Perhaps you can inquire on the blog that offered these downloads.
  4. Hey guys, There are only a few hours left to help fund Harrison Bankhead's new CD. $8 gets you a copy of the new CD, to be issued in July. He needs only $200 more to pay the musicians, but the dealine is 5pm EST. Here's the Kickstarter link: http://www.kickstart...recor?ref=email
  5. Available for download at several major sites for $6-10.
  6. Delightful! Thanks for sharing, Brad.
  7. It's not so much what she did, it's where she did it!
  8. In the spring of 2011, the Jazz Standard presented "Impulse Nights", a series of five concerts to comemorate that label's 50th anniversary. I came down from Boston to hear Roy Hargrove lead an ensemble playing Oliver Nelson’s The Blues and the Abstract Truth . The next evening, I attended Ryan Truesdell's big band performance of Gil Evans’ Out of the Cool. I enjoyed both concerts, and it was obvious to me that the artists involved had devoted a good deal of "thought, planning and conception" to the music. I had no illusions about what I was going to experience, and I never felt the need to compare these performances with the originals. As another member has commented, such performances are successful if they are entertaining. No one's trying to rewrite history, just play good music.
  9. Oliver Lake is the person who first comes to mind (and beautifully so to my ears).
  10. You can purchase $50 iTunes gift cards (limit 2) for just $40 online at walmart.com. You don't actually receive a physical card. Instead, they email you a code that you enter into your iTunes account, and the credit balance appears every time you log onto the iTunes store. Say what you want about iTunes, but they do carry the CIMP label catalog and other stuff I can't find elsewhere.
  11. A link to Dionne's article would be appreciated.
  12. Although distributed by a French company, Harmonia Mundi, Solar Records is, in fact, a Spanish outfit located in Barcelona.
  13. Up, for a very worthy cause. I hope more people here will take this opportunity to support a living, breathing artist. This is as real as it gets. Please give.
  14. I had a '57 Stratocaster stolen from my car while I was picking up my bass player for a gig at Berklee. It broke my heart, but I did make the gig. Lots of bluesy solos that night.
  15. Have folks taken the time to view the brief tutorial that comes with the new player, or gone to Apple's website to learn about the changes and workings of iTunes 11? I ask these questions because I noticed people on other sites expressing opinions like, "No way am I going to bother" and "I shouldn't have to study just to use a damn media player!" I think the redesigned iTunes 11 offers some major improvments in looks and functionality. The more I learn about it, the more I like it.
  16. Thanks for letting me know about Harrison's unfortunate circumstances, and affording me the opportuntity to give back to someone who's shared so much in the past.
  17. From what I gather, the 22-year-old passed away sometime yesterday, the cause of death not yet revealed.
  18. It appears that those talks have broken down, and today a bankruptcy judge is hearing the company's plans to liquidate. Funny how most reports lay the blame of Hostess's demise squarely on the bakers union, rather than the changing preferences of a more health-conscious public. Can Pork Rinds and Funyuns be far behind?
  19. At a news conference, Singleton said he had no idea at the time what Clash did for a living. Mystery solved.
  20. I'm sad to hear how this story has ended. Granted, I don't know what additional information might surface over time, but so far it seems like Clash's biggest offense is just being gay. Elmo actor Kevin Clash resigns amid sex allegation NEW YORK — Longtime Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned Tuesday from "Sesame Street" amid a second allegation that he sexually abused underage boys. A lawsuit filed Tuesday in New York by 24-year-old college student Cecil Singleton accuses Clash of engaging in sexual behavior with him over a two-week period while he was underage. Singleton said they met on a gay chat line. At a news conference, Singleton said he had no idea at the time what Clash did for a living. In its statement, Sesame Workshop said "the controversy surrounding Kevin's personal life has become a distraction that none of us want," leading Clash to conclude "that he can no longer be effective in his job." "This is a sad day for Sesame Street," the company said. http://xfinity.comca...=hero_media_bos
  21. From the auction's description: "All proceeds earned by any Hostess products sold by us will go to Toys For Tots in our area."
  22. Fear not, for you can also download them from amazon and itunes.
  23. You might also want to learn more about the PM function, unless this thread was meant to be an open and unabashed bromance.
  24. "Middle jazz" is particularly popular with this crowd:
  25. Don't miss Dave Burns' debut on Vanguard, entitled Dave Burns: And this one, featuring Dave Burns and Seldon Powell on tenor:
