  1. That tune must have made a "deep" impression ...
  2. Missing from Larry's list is the Première Suite d'Orchestre, written at the end of Debussy's studies at the Paris Conservatoire, 1883-84; it was presumed lost but the score was rediscovered by chance in a New York library, the version for piano duet as well as the original orchestration by the composer himself. Its first recording is included on the disc by Les Siècles I posted above. I received this CD today and will report. Several composers participated in the orchestration of several other works, but I will have to consult some books first before I can comment on this aspect.
  3. Ron Crotty, the original bass player of Dave Brubeck's Octet, Trio, and Quartet, has passed. Besides his many sessions with Brubeck he led a trio session with what proved to be an early stage of the Vince Guaraldi Trio, issued on the Fantasy LP "Modern Music from San Francisco". He was active in California until recently. An obituary can be found here.
  4. I second the recommendation of that EMI disc with Milhaud conducting - in fact any of his own recordings I have heard gives a genuine impression of the man and his music. And I always enjoy this disc which has a rhythmically more on point reading of the Suite Provencal than Milhaud's own. He understood the essence of Brazilian and other folkloric rhythms much better than most classical composers.
  5. I have all of those Mighty Quinn discs and they all sound mighty fine - looks like they were all discs Cuscuna couldn't reissue under the Blue Note heading.
  6. Yes, Martinon is great, and a box with all of his Debussy and Ravel recordings was reissued at very low prices. Besides him I strongly recommend this orchestra which I had the pleasure to hear perform last year:
  7. Monet and the Impressionists at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. Link Great opportunity for a German to see some of the US based paintings.
  8. Happy Birthday to our chief (key-)boarder!
  9. If you like violin concertos, Christopher Hogwood conducted a series of albums with Czech musicians which were widely appreciated. But any of the many recordings with Czech orchestras are great, there even is one collecting his jazz inspired works. Besides that I love his piano music, which was splendidly recorded by Radoslav Kvapil, who has the perfect feeling for this music. He did a total of three CDs but the original issues are hard to come by, the one pictured is a cheap one disc excerpt. There is a very good biography by Milos Safranek, but I have no idea whether there is an English translation.
  10. Very sad news, always enjoyed his playing immensely, although, strangely, I never really managed to relate to the Gemini LP, so I passed it on to someone who really wanted it. But everything else I heard thrilled me. Much like Johnny Coles, he was a trumpet player at home in many styles from R & B to avant garde. R.I.P., and many thanks for your inspired, free-spirited music making.
  11. Thanks a lot - I completely forgot about that site ... but that's what makes this board so great. You ask a dumb question and get a practical answer. A virtual pandora's box, don't know where to begin.
  12. I'm looking for the double CD AB Fable (E)ABCD2-011/12 "I Like Be I Like Bop" with early violin stuff. If anybody has a spare copy, please pm or e-mail me - thanks.
  13. I have so much respect for what he achieved ... R.I.P.
  14. IMHO, the extra material on discs 3 & 4 are significantly less interesting than the original Bitches Brew release. So, If you're not a Miles completeist and you already own the 2-disc version of Bitches Brew, I'd say that you're fine. As ever, YMMV. Too late, my copy arrived today ... It's nice enough to keep.
  15. ... that's what he really was. He did such a great job to real high standards as a reissue producer, and was a fine musician who paid his dues. R.I.P. Funny, yesterday I held his CDs in my hands for the first time in years ...
  16. Me, too! But some of the singles Babs himself produced may be hard to find, and if he was still alive at the time jazzbo suggested the box, negotiations would have become downright crazy.
  17. No I don't - thanks for the hint. I'll go for it.
  18. Yeah, Brew was great, too. Over the years I came to like Brew and Quinichette a lot more than all the Brothers.
  19. He MC'd on Johnny Griffin's Riverside live studio LP, "Studio Jazz Party" - although he doesn't sind it gives the whole affair a unique atmosphere. He's one of the guys in the center.
  20. It was just 78's on Blue Note - only in the late 1990's Cuscuna compiled them to this disc, which has some tracks not on the Classics and vice versa:
  21. I see amazon has it for a comparable price. Was it always that cheap? Are live parts available elsewhere? I'm not a Miles completist, so are they indispensable?
  22. JPC in Germany sells the Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Box set for € 16.90: Link
  23. I have some single CDs on Ace, and they indeed sound fantastic! I also like this one which collects instrumental tracks:

    Herschel Evans

The master takes of the Harry James sessions were included on HEP CD 1032 "Basie Rhythm". Excuse me if it's a dumb question, but what do the abbreviations in the solography mean, "M", "FM" etc.?
