Was that Hampton jam session recorded shortly before Evans' death ever released? (See the list Ubu linked)
-
I was lucky to see him perform about 30 years ago, and was so moved by his sincerity and the way he cared for his audience. No routine at all, which is a great accomplishment after so many years of touring. R.I.P., and many thanks for everything.

LP Labels (the circular bits glued on the vinyl)
mikeweil replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I had an original 78 of Rock Around the Clock on Brunswick, but some dumb guy dropped it during one of our last removals ... Similar to this, butmine was a German pressing: -
As for downloads, they are okay for me if I get decent documentation. I did download quite a bit for about two years but noticed even though I did burn some of the stuff etc. I hardly listened to it. Now that I have got decent listening equipment for downloaded audio I still prefer CDs or vinyl. I have no idea why, but I do. The only case where downloading is an option for me right now is some classical stuff that is download only, but in excellent audio quality and with full documentation, or some pop tracks where I like only single tracks and don't need the whole album. Audio quality and documentation is the most important to me. Since most of the cheapos don't gve me that I do not care for them. But I returned or gave away legit reissues that sounded like crap just as well. I'd say the whole idea about copyright and property of art badly needs re-consideration. If we, the people, want music,we should pay our musicians decently. A governmentally guaranteed income for artists or the like. Sounds like Utopia, I know.

That "serious music" approach certainly is a latter day invention. If you consider how close baroque opera was to theater of the time ... I am never afraid to laugh at a good musical joke, vocal or instrumental, but there are always people to whom music is a quasi religious affair and emotional reactions are sacrilege.

Still have a few of these, found them interesting, but they drove me mad as I always had to turn over to see what LP it was. -
In other words, do I buy a used LP for 100 $, or a 10 € box set from one of those "triflin'-ass EuroMusiPorn" labels. We are the collectors, we are the buyers, weare the standards, but I'm afraid we here are an elite, the average jazz buyer, even musicians I know, has not a fraction of the discograpical information nor the money to get it or buy the rare LP. I know plenty jazz lovers of this type. I'd really want to kow how many copies of these boxes are made and sold, and to whom, besides us.) That said, how about those who sell these boxes? What about their morality, not to mention amazon?) I'm with you Jim, we have to keep up the standards and pay the price - but I doubt anything would change if we here all did. Labels must make money, legit or not, and the way the majors are run they will not make money from boxes made the Mosaic way. As one German philosopher recently put it discussing such questions, "there is no way to live right in a world all wrong". Moral decisions whevever I am buying groceries, or CDs, phew .... it's a hard life, and I'm not kidding.

Beginnings of music as we now know it?
mikeweil replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This is a more recent (2010) and musically superior recording of these pieces, as well asone of the fifth book of madrigals: La Venexiana is currently the best Italian vocal ensemble for this music, their complete recording of Monteverdi's madrigals is highly recommended. Our picture of Luzzaschi's music will probably remain incomplete - e.g. his keyboard music was presumed lost except for a few pieces copied in manucript collections. Only in 1980 a single handwritten copy of one of his three printed collections of keyboard pieces was discovered and reprinted, the first recording is this CD: An excellent recording, btw, and at low price (at least in Europe). The gentleman on the cover is Luzzaschi. I am convinced that virtuosic music to be performed only by trained singers and/or instrumentalists in exquisite circles is much older than that, and found in any culture with elaborate musical traditions. -
The sound of the United Archives box is as good as it gets. They must have had good source material. Look here for a track list - as I said, the solo piano and accordion tracks are missing. I also strongly recommend this CD with live material:
-
The complete track list of the Acrobat box can be found here. It covers a wide timespan from his early British years to Capitol sessions from 1957. But much of this material is/was reissued before. There is a CD with the Savoy sides, and most of the Capitol CD reissues have bonus material - the solo piano adds a whole 'nother LP recorded at the same sessions. I'd rather get the single reissues and the MGM box - I doubt Verve will do their own version.
-
Similar thoughts here - I learned quite a bit from some of the more eloquent members here.

There is a reissue on Jazz Collectors with two RCA LPs, LPM 3372 & 3448: p.s. But the last of Levitt's RCA LPs, 42nd Street, RCA LPM 3615, has never been reissued, to my knowledge.

They are nice and give a glimpse at the formation process of Coltrane's quartet after leaving Miles. It took a while until the Tyner/Garrison/Jones trio was together.

Of course that's Larry Willis on the far left!

This cover photo makes me realize that I have grown an old man, just like the idols of my youth ...

Saw David Williams play with Cedar Walton, great groove, locked in with Billy Higgins. IIRC he has a Carribean background, did some great Jamaican bass on some Ernest Ranglin record.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Kevin Mahogany was in town tonight, with a German/Dutch rhythm section that plays with him for years and had a nice, no-nonsense groove. Drummer missed the first set - one of the most important highway bridges across the Rhine is closed for repair, and neither did his GPS show it nor the touring agency inform him ... The singer was in fine form, may be the last of his kind, I'm afraid - he appeared a bit tired or sick, and the way he sang "For Al We Know" as an encore, sans microphone or accompaniment, was so heartfelt that it left me a bit worried about him .... -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

Arrrgh! I knew the Woody Herman would move to Last Chance as soon as I bid on the Jones/Lewis set .... no more funds for this until next month. -
Happy Birthday Allen Lowe

My belated wishes, Allen - all the best and all you need! -
Thanks for the link - which mentions that besides that siingle release, it will be part of a multi-disc set scheduled for 2016/17 .... ?!? Now will this include the previous Resonance issues or more unearthed material?
-
Strictly speaking, reissues are new releases, so it should/could be "new recordings", "archival releases", reissues", IMO ... In my own early music forum, I have all these in a "recordings" forum, even the box sets.

Thanks, that makes it a bit easier to send payment. -
what are you drinking right now?
mikeweil replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My favourite wine during my university student days - it was on the menu of my gang's favourite Italian restaurant. When dry wines were called for more and more they dropped it, and this traditional type of white wine fom the Orvieto region almost vanished. It's hard to find outside of Italy, but finally I succeeded in finding an import source - still my favourite taste, it turns out.
