  1. I Can't Get Started - especially Pres' version If You Could See Me Now (Dameron) Look To The Stars (Jobim)
  2. ... which turned out to be as lovingly done as the others. Not the type of music I can listen to every day, but I get the message. Keep up your high standards, especially in chosing the albums for reissue. Really looking forward to the Steig ....
  3. This thread made me pull out "Breakthrough" - it dawned on me that this album may have been the first time I ever heard Mobley. I bought it for Walton, whom I had seen live at the time. I can't remember what impression he made on me, but know that I really fell in love with his playing when I heard "Soul Station" some time later. To read that he was only 41 in 1972 when he practically was at the end of his career gives me goosebumps ..... "This is very brittle stuff." very nicely describes that music ...
  4. Hmmm ... IMO Patterson was best on his own or with Stitt - and Billy James was on drums more often than not. Which recordings do you have in mind?
  5. There are many bass/drums teams that would qualify for their special chemistry, e.g.: Percy Heath & Connie Kay Israel Crosby & Vernel Fournier ... or Don Patterson & Billy James
  6. I find it amazing that with all those pedestrians crossing, automobiles overhauling etc., that there was no crash ....
  7. Couldn't say it better!
  8. I'm interested, but the lowest pricing over here is € 30!
  9. I'd consider it if they included some more live tracks from the Flood sessions ...
  10. I'm a BIG fan of Herbie, but I already have too much of it, and most importantly the Japan stuff. I'll pass ...
  11. Yes I agree - they un-learned using dynamics because they have to hit hard to hear themselves or make themselves heard and to keep a certain groove, which is harder to do when you're playing softly. When there is ampfification, the sound technicians ruin your dynamics, anyway.
  12. Well, that's only a fraction of the 2560 recordings ERATO made ...
  13. I think she hits the keys a bit hard, so it loses some of the poetic undertones. And I think the brass is slightly out of tune in some passages. But that's Russian school expressiveness. The one recording that brought me to tears for its poetic beauty was Claire Chevallier and Anima Eterna.
  14. I don't see them as being exaggerated. We are accustomed to a narrower dynamic range from the limits of tape and vinyl. Musicians were asked to narrow their dynamics, especially drummers, to fit that range. We're so used to that by our listening habits that we no longer know how wide the dynamic range of a drum set really is. Place yourself in front of one and then let the drummer take you from a whisper to a scream, and then name a recording that mirrors that range. I have a few, and they sound unnatural to most people. It's mostly listening habits. p.s. this refers to John L's post # 27
  15. Erato was bought by the Warner group many years ago and shut down in 2001. Reissues are found on other labels of that company, but they obviously neglect that catalogue.
  16. In the meantime I ordered a copy of the Bill Dixon ...
  17. Re: Curtis Counce - the Gambit set did not include the Dooto LP, just the Contemporary sides, but not everything - just 23 of the 30 tracks recorded plus 3 recorded for the Stars of Jazz TV show. They left off the 3 Elmo Hope tracks, among others. You can lokk up all the tracks in the Carl Perkins Discography and the Elmo Hope Discography, respectively. All the sessions were made in 1956 and 1957. The Gambit double CD, btw, is oop and amazon.de sellers ask for ridiculous prices.
  18. Have a look at for an embarrassing mixup of Larry Coryell and Larry Carlton ...
  19. Geez, I have that CD! Just forgot about it, although it was correctly filed under "The Three". Will give it a spin for breakfast. Maybe I will move it to letter "S" once the other discs have arrived ... I remember reading somewhere that Oliver Nelson was supposed to lead the session but passed shortly before the date - that's why the CD opens with his tune "Yearnin' ....
  20. Just pulled the Fischer from my mailbox and listened: the sound is every bit as great as I expected, the dynamics are astounding, and it brings out every detail of Fischer's unorthodox instrumentations. I agree this is a masterpiece, that ranks along with the best Gil Evans albums. Clare Fischer may be my top favourite arranger .... IMO nobody wrote better for low brass & woodwinds. Is there no more definite information about the recording date, or the unidentified conga player on the last track? Chino Valdes? Thank you so much for this lovingly produced reissue!
  21. Thanks ..... when I place both the LP and CD in the cart, it worked, but with the combined shipping ... I will use the e-mail you posted early next month. Hope you at least get even with the sales ....
  22. For those being able to read German, there is an excellent book on the cover by Walter Grasskamp - there should be an answer to the question posted above somewhere in the book, but currently I don't have the time to take a look.
  23. Thanks everyone - I will get Old Places Old Faces at a later date- Lloyd's only on three tracks. For now I ordered Soul Shadows and Invitation.
  24. As I said I don't have any of his solo albums, so any recommendation is welcome.
