That sample track sounds nice ... ... but I'd like to hear more before I go for it.

Jimmy Wormworth! He was already swingin' and kickin' in 1959 when he was backing Lambert, Hendricks & Ross as a member of the Ike Isaacs Trio ... what a long standing career.

I have the Discovery LP reissue of Extension, but I will get the new CD anyway. Fischer's writing for low wind instruments is unsurpassed, IMHO.

Gene Rush plays on this one - Steve Novosel and Jimmy Hopps, too - but mostly service, accompanied congregational singing etc.

Considering that Bix was more advanced than any vocalist of his time, it's okay. And a fantastic Idea its wa, for sure - whose Idea was it, BTW?

... for which Eddie Jefferson wrote lyrics to tenor saxman James Moody's 1949 improvisation on the standard "I'm in the Mood for Love." Ira Gitler told so in his notes to a 1970 Prestige LP with recordings by Jefferson, Ross, and Joe Carroll - but in his 1992 liner notes to King Pleasure's collected recordings for now EMI owned labels, he disputed this. Pleasure had always claimed the lyrics to himselves, and their style is closer to what Pleasure wrote than what Jefferson usually wrote. Jefferson probaly invented the idea, writing lyrics to Coleman Hawkins's famous Body And Soul solo as early as 1940 ... The February 19, 1952 King Pleasure session was the first recording, however, but followed closely by one more session on December 12, 1952, and Annie Ross' on October 9, 1952 - Jefferson's first was on February 20, 1953. Jefferson early Prestige sessions and the Charlie Ferguson session instrumental tracks serving as the base of some of his lyrics were never properly documented, there are still some unissued tracks. No idea if they still exist. Jon Hendricks' recording of Four Brothers with Dave Lambert was close behind on May 12, 1955, but he always acknowledged Pleasure's and Jefferson's influence and that they and Annie Ross were before him.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm really into the last two I bought, the MJQ and Pres ... what more can you ask for than such excellent music. Pres is a model of elegance and swing, and I always admired the MJQ' s balance of arrangement and improvisation, which remains a model for my own band. This music inspires me to play - that's what I appreciate, before everything else. -

Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well

My set arrived this morning. Now I can relax .... The booklet is one of the finest Mosaic booklets I have ever seen, Loren Schoenberg's essay is superb. The sound quality is excellent, and Pres is the greatest saxophone player to ever grace this planet. If one has ears, he must love Pres' playing ... The Pres forever! It's # 4139, in case anybody's interested. -

Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't

The Mosaic Max Roach was originally planned to include the sessions recorded for other labels during the time span covered- Argo, Time, Riverside, Candid - it would have been a really big set, but a gas musically. -
That's the best thing you can do, take care of yourselves and your wife just as well - looks like the rest of your family is on it, too - that's great. I remember a kind of hilarious situation when I was 300 miles away with my wife and my mother called and asked me to pick her up at the hairdresser to take her home - turned out she was alright and well in her living room ...

Well, one that certainly could have been, but wasn't realized, is the complete Keynote box. Or the Stanley Dance Felsted sessions. -
I give up - I never could select just three. I love so many of 'em, and my preferences are shifting from one to another all the time.

Jeff, there are no perfect solutions in situations like this. The changes you observe with your father probably would have happened anyway, sooner or later, but it sure is the best way to see he is taken care of in a place like to moved him to. That state of disorientation may just be his way to cope with it all ... You did the best you can, and you care, that's priceless. Put your doubts aside and make the best of it. We went through similar things with my mother some years ago - afterwards you can always say, we better had done this or that, but in the long run ... just go ahead, you certainly do it better than 95% of all people. You're a good guy, I wish you and your father all the best, and enjoy whatever time is left. To witness the decline is painful, but inevitable, but I'm sure he will accept it at some point.

My condolences - it's alway very sad to hear about the loss of friends. You knew Sam Furnace? I saw him play in Cologne with Mongo Santamaria's band in the early 1980's - very good sax player. Didn't know he had passed ...

Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well
mikeweil replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, not nearly enough of the big band classic sides ... thanks for your comment, I ordered that cheap copy. Since I'm not a Basie completist and have a lot of Pres, that should do it for me - besides the fact that I need a good sounding CD with Fiesta In Blue! -

But that box doesn't include Fiesta In Blue, that's a major reason I skipped it ... OTOH there's a like new copy on amazon for € 25 incl. shipping ...
