  1. Thanks all, it was a normal workday, so no time for Tjader ... but a nice evening dinner with my wife at our favorite local Italian ristorante. Sunday will be partytime ... Waiting for the Mosaic Pres box which is my birthday gift to myself ... until then, will play some Tjader. Thanks again my friends, what would the world be without this place ....
  2. Happy Birthday!
  3. 'nuther download, please ...
  4. Live recording from 2007, on EMI/Blue Note Italy - anyone know how this is?
  5. I seized the opportunity of the last shipping rates reduction at Mosaic and ordered the Pres box - would have hated to miss it. Very much looking forward to this. And it seems I must get me that Columbia box, to ...
  6. That was Dexter's band that recorded his best Columbia LP, Manhattan Symphonie, so it should be very good .... But the Mobley is a big surprise. Unavoidable buy like the Lucky Thompson they released a while ago.
  7. I prefer February, since my birthday is on the 21st ...
  8. Then set me for February 2013, please ...
  9. Thanks for linking the interviews - very nice. Thanks to delmark he was able to record frequently - here's another one:
  10. Such a nice person - I was lucky to meet him a few years ago when he was guesting with a local big band. Live long and prosper!
  11. It sure was ...
  12. Oh no .... I instantly loved his playing style when I first heard him on those many Eddie Harris records - still have them. Then I heard a John Klemmer track from a Chess LP on the radio, and wrote the moderator if it was Jodie Christian on piano - he answered I was right and complemented me on my ears. I've been following his career ever since. One of those many players without whom the scene would be much less varied an interesting. R.I.P., and many thanks for your inspiring piano.
  13. To my ears, Herbie's solo on Ostinato from the Mwandishi album is exemplary to what he explored on the Rhodes rather than the acoustic: The Rhodes' color, resembling African xylophones, inspired him even more to rhythmic/percussive patterns in which harmonic aspects were less important. You can already find this on Inventions and Dimensions, but from the sextet albums on this really blossomed. The solo on Fat Albert Rotunda is another case in point, with lots of call and response patterns.
  14. Yep!
  15. OPA recorded two LPs for Milestone - they were combined on this twofer CD in complete form, maybe you can locate a copy: Tjader's Augua Dulce was combined with a live album (Live at Funky Quarters) on a twofer CD - one short set closer left off from the live sides - the CD is called Descarga:
  16. Yes, Pres was in the band. Four tunes, IIRC a few alternates were released later on.
  17. There is a Signature Discography online, but still a work in progress, it's a lot of reasearch due to Thiele's frequent re-compiling procedures ... http://www.bsnpubs.com/new/thiele.html
  18. That Signature 78's list was just what I was looking for - another proof of how great this forum is! Thanks all! One more vote for a 1940's Signature Mosaic box set.
  19. The pop scene has a sadly long list of wasted talents that fell victim to self-destruction to its credit - poor Whitney is the most recent name on it. Really an incredible voice. R.I.P.
  20. He forgot to bring his muchacha ...
  21. Updated!
  22. OPA's Goldenwings was on Milestone - a band from Uruguay (Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards) that were Airto's sidemen for a few years, he produced their Milestone LPs. Nice Latin fusion stuff. Tjader's Agua Dulce was on Fantasy - rather salsa-tinged album, similar to Primo which was reissued as OJC. It is from the early 1970's. Pete Escovedo is on it.
  23. I have one Muse LP by Joe Bonner which has an awful degree of surface noise. I have a lot of Atlantic US pressings from the 1970's which are noisy, due to the label re-using their pressing platters as log as possible. I even had an LP or two with visible enclosures of tiny pieces or paper and the like - which of course caused some kind of bump whenever the stylus went over it.
