  1. I once had both Basie Columbia boxes, but found I rarely listened to them - too many alternates in some cases, and my favourite Basie track of all, Fiesta in Blue, was defective ... What does that Columbia box look like? I can't seem to find it, only two Definitive boxes that go for ridiculous prices: Is it this 4 CD box?
  2. Yes, she even made a more or less jazz oriented tour with her father a few years ago. But I skipped the 2004 "Jazz" album, found it more easy listening than jazz. I think she should have kept singing part jazz over all the years, ahe lost too much of her jazz shops. Her Schlager fans think it's jazz, though ... This 2007 CD of "unreleased recordings" is more pop than jazz, although it is jazz tunes - you can find sound samples on German amazon. I think it's bland ...
  3. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!!!
  4. Yes the Gitte album is on CD. Nice album, I even had a copy of the LP but sold it to some board member - if I compare this with Carmen McRae's album with the CBBB, Gitte does not stand up to the comparison, I'm afraid.
  5. Lester Young changed the world, and this set has a big chunk of the details, that's why. Pretty much the same here ... hope my set will arrive soon.
  6. Mail arrived today ... Maybe it takes those mails a day longer to get over the drink and over the alps ...
  7. Geez! I must have sensed this when I ordered a copy two weeks ago ... glad I did.
  8. IIRC they edited the introductions to make all the music fit on one CD. I sure miss John Lewis' voice of the Label M CD .... I still know several of his solos by heart.
  9. Happy Birthday Michel!

I saw that disc in a shop yesterday but couldn't listen to it - very curious about it!
  11. After buying the three HEP CDs (they included Harry James' first two sessions because many players from the Basie band of the time were participating) I certainly won't buy the GRP set just for the rhythm section tracks - I trust the ears of Hans and others who compared them. The sound of the HEPs is amazingly good by any standards. I think I will go for the Definitive CD - I like the idea of all the rhythm section tracks on one CD, and will not buy duplicates. Thanks all! I emailed HEP about these tracks and they replied they will not remaster them in the near future.
  12. Since I have only the "Complete" set, I can only answer points 1. and 2: 1. - Yes it has an handful of alternates and unreleased tracks - especially of the "Five by Monk by Five" and the Solo piano sessions. Some of it was added to OJC reissues. 2. the "Complete"set is in recording order where known and has two pages of original covers in the booklet. Hope that helps a bit ...
  13. Now that I have all three HEP CDs with the Basie Decca sides, I find out that the November 9, 1938 and January 26, 1939 sessions with just the rhythm section are not included - where can I get these in good sound? Thanks, as always.
  14. Of all the non-Bird in that set, I only have the Cecil Payne, which is a good album, and maybe some Oscar Moore - I thought of Tampa, too.
  15. Sorry for answering so late - the box combines the Prestige and Pablo recordings of the MJQ. "Softly" happens to be the last track on the final Prestige LP, and it opened the first Pablo LP. That both versions are sequenced one after another is a nice idea for comparison, and a coincidence as they condensed all the material to four CDs. Thus the Prestige tracks do not quite fill the first two CDs and the first Pablo LP starts about two thirds into disc two.
  16. Moderators, can you please delete this topic? I posted my question in another more appropriate froum. Thanks.
  17. The list of clips GEMA has blocked is endless - I am endlessly mad at them.
  18. Hope never dies ...
  19. Yeah, there are so many rare items in that box, and it's nice they always combined two LPs to one CD. But I probably have most, if not all of the Charlie Parker live stuff in the Bird Box - well, at least that's an LP set. Seems like I will get a copy ... p.s. changed my mind, will not get it.
  20. Is that a David Stone Martin cover?
  21. Not to hijack this thread, but my best wishes, and keep warm!
  22. Considering the general state of audio recording at the time, yes and yes.
  23. I have a Japanese LP pressing which sounds exactly like the Columbia CD ....
  24. Oh, how much I missed that cat .... We all fight being chewed up, so stick around!
