  1. Hmm ... I had that Frank Morgan CD but sold it after a few years - somehow it didn't thrill me as spectacular enough to keep it. I had listened to the E.S.T. plays Monk CD at my retailer and didn't like it then ... neither do I now. re # 13: I wonder why I didn't recognize a Monk tune, and believe it or not, at first I thought it could be Dolphy with Han Bennink ... That this bandolim player sound so much like Western swing and folk blue is quite a thing!

    Mono cartridge

I bought a Grado mono cartridge a few months ago as I had a spare headshell for my Thorens TD 160. Those mono LPs from the 1950's indeed do sound quieter and a bit more dynamic. My question is: should I play back mono pressings manufactured after 1968 with this mono cartridge or rather with the stereo? E.g. I have a Japanese LP reissue of Shearing material clearly designated as mono grooves which also sounds better when played back with the mono, but I'm not sure about my other mono LPs made after 1968 ... How do you handle these?
  3. Before throwing anything away I would send an e-mail to Phono Phono in Berlin and ask them for a colleague in Switzerland ...
  4. It's not indispensable - similar to those Prestige All-Star sessions Trane participated in.
  5. Claude is certainly better informed than I am! I sometimes wonder how much care labels really take in selecting sound sources for their releases ... I agree that this session is not that thrilling, and wish they would have chose Kelly's other Riverside album for SACD release. Seems several of the SACD Fantasy released themselves were not up to par.
  6. Herbie Mann on bass clarinet throughout, and doing nicely.
  7. Is this available somewhere? The Mosaic Capitol box, I'm afraid ...
  8. Thanks for linking this -very interesting. Since it can be saved to your hard disc I can digest it piece by piece ...
  9. If you don't want every alternate take Gray played, the Classics CD is fine. That Damita Jo vocal is a bit off mike, the reason why it stayed unissued at the time. It survived because Sonny Criss kept a copy and handed it over to Don Schlitten at some time - the latter released it on the Criss Memorial Album on Xanadu.
  10. Okay I found it:
  11. Sound is okay on the Prestige LPs - but I haven't heard any other issues. The LPs have them as two long continuous tracks. The third piece is a vocal IIRC - my Gray disco is still in the old house ... will post as soon as I have moved it here. Can't locate the rare LP it was on, must have it somewhere.
  12. IMHO, the hybrid SACD of Kelly Blue sounds as good as it gets ... amazon.com link

    Jimmy Forrest

    Yep!
  14. Correct - track 9 is from the same concert.
  15. From the amazon.at website: "The site for Austria points to special themes, agendas and offers for our Austrian customers. Amazon.at is not an independent enterprise, but consists of regionalized web pages for Austria."
  16. During the move this fell into my hands: bought the German translation (which is a very good job of transferring black English into German dialect) 20 years ago ... about time I read this. I'm curious whether any of you have read this, and what you think about it.

Finally I am back online again, although the move is not yet complete, but the new comp is fine, and the DSL connection is running. Thanks for the very entertaining compilation which brightened up my day when I found out that I had to move the whole 8 x 15 feet wall of CD shelves by an inch ..... # 1 - great opener, no idea who it is, nicely over the top. Wonder if they play like this all the time. Is this a serious trad band or a fun band? # 2 - very nice version of "When you wish upon a star, if I'm not mistaken - great lyrical alto. Not Konitz - would like to hear more of this player. # 3 - dangoesque rendition of John Lewis' "Django", nice arrangement and very competent, but doesn't move me emotionally. # 4 - I'm sure I have some of this pianist - Vince Guaraldi comes to my mind. # 5 - This sounds more like a mandolin than a guitar - with drums and electric bass? I think I once had a CD of that guy, but can't remember his name. Oh here it comes - is it these guys? http://www.jazzmandolinproject.com/ - they know what they're doing. # 6 - now that's more tradtional, but only on the surface. David Grisman? Nice how he keeps the balance between old and new, blues and western swing. # 7 - Don't like the sound and intonation of that violinist - too sentimental for my taste. # 8 - Now that's cute, I'd say European guys. Nothing too original, but nice. # 9 - is this "Wolverine Blues" - Rather close to the original, but well done. # 10 - This is great - "Salt Peanuts" done older style - this shows howe closely bebop was connected to preceding jazz styles. Who is this? # 11 - I expected "One O'Clock jump" after that intro. Excellent player. Tatum gone boogie? # 12 - Recognized this during the first bar. Great stuff, great way to finish the long night of playing. I love this music and the two movies concerned. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:dzfyxqrhldse # 13 - Kind of Dolphy-inspired. Sax has a sound as if Steve Lacy were playing alto. # 14 - some Bud Powell tune? I don't think it's Bud - too sloppily played, rather unimaginative. Not too much happening. # 15 - I know that tune, but the name escapes me. I'm not a fan of that type of fast neobop. # 16 - two bones, inspired by Jay and Kai, but not them. A little lackluster. # 17 - Monk*'s Evidence played way too fast. At theat tempo they cannot place the chords correctly, rhythmically - that aspect of the tune is much more important than the changes (which were boorrowed from Just You Just Me). Sorry, you didn't understand Monk's tune ... # 18 - a truly rosy singer - voice like Bev Kelly. Who is this? # 19 - Uh - already over? nice closing tag! Very well done - # 10 is something I would buy. Thanks a lot!!! p.s. edited for a typo and layout.
  18. I always had to beg and fight with my parents as a schoolkid to watch The Prisoner - it was a very late show, and my father just didn't get the point of the series. That last episode with all walking out through the gallery of juke boxes playing "All you need is love" was pure pop art. I loved it and bought the DVD package as soon as it was out. Yes he was a FREE MAN! The Prisoner was way beyond its time, and the court martial scenes copied by Star Trek and many others. Thanks a million times, and R.I.P.
  19. I'm in - will get my new comp tomorrow, but still waiting for my new phone and DSL to work - and they sent the login data and software to my old adress, so I wonder where the hardware will turn up which is still on its way ..... pm sent.
  20. Will get a new comp next week, and be back online on January 12 - I dindn't peek and will post some comments, anyway - some nice stuff.

    BFT #61

I will join on January 12, when my new DSL in the house we moved to will be connected. Will get a new comp next week - but still so much to work on, moving all the books and LPs .... noticed this morning I have to move the CD shelves I just filled two inches to the right!
  22. My discs are here since last Friday, listened, liked several tracks a lot, very interesting stuff ... My comp is down , but I will find a way to post some guesses.
  23. Tom Scott's debut on Impulse, "The Honeysuckle Breeze" - lots of late 1960's pop-oriented tyring-hard-to-be-hip stuff, and one hard swinging tune among it. Well, he was 17 at the time he recorded it .... his next for Impulse, "Rural Still Life", is great.
  24. Yes that's the original cover. I never heard of anyone disputing its authenticity. AFAIK it looked like that at the Domicile.
  25. But, other than that , really NOICE!!! (imagine heavy London accent - I'm just back from there).
