Gerald Wilson Mosaic is running low

If it is still around by the end of the month I will order one, too. -
Al, that would be great! I would have loved to post more on the last three BFTs, but the process that lead us to the decision to sell our house and move to a smaller one was a long and difficult one, along with illness of my wife, a lot of work which I helped her to get through, minor surgery on my side, difficult changes in the band I'm playing in that have been resolved, designing some new projects, and recognizing that we can only go on when moving to a smaller house that is easier to keep. Since we learned about a house becoming available much closer to my wife's working place, and had someone at hand from the band willing and able to buy ours, we decided the time was right! I face moving more than 5.000 CDs, several hundred LPs, a large library etc. - not mentioning all the other formalities going along with it - but it's worth it! My wife says there was only one other moment in her life when she felt a decision was absolutely right - when she agreed to marry me after I asked her ..... The BFT is not dead - it's just that people need reminders etc. Go ahead - I will support you as much as I can!

Things are going slow here recently - I apologize for not pushing things a little more, but I was pretty busy during recent months and will be until spring, as we are going to move in December, and I will start a second job besides music. Please go ahead by yourself - I will try to at least listen to all test discs but cannot promise to post guesses, but will have enough time to update the links here. Sorry, but these changes are unprecedented ...

I'd certanly like to hear that one - even if he was milking the groove from "Fever" all over the LP.

I had a lot of Bud on LP, and sold it all and bought the Verve and Blue Note boxes, and some single CDs - e.g. the Bud Plays Bird CD - but never felt I needed the RCA sessions on CD. His last LP on Reprise is another one I didn't re-buy.

'Jazz seen' seems to be out of print in the US - the German paperback edition is available used at amazon.de, but oop as well - Taschen placed a nice obituary on their website; only Jazz Life is still available from them.

R.I.P. I alway liked his photos - received two books of his works as gifts over the years and enjoy them immensely. One of the very greatest.

Things We Learn When We Stay Home Sick and Watch TV
mikeweil replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Al, you must be pretty damn sick to watch all that ... -
Okay, one that I would really like to have, heard on the radio when it wa issued but never found, is flutist Lloyd McNeill's self-produced LP "Asha" - you hear me, y'all?

The Murphy seems to be a new recording, and the Ellis is probably the second most negligible LP in his discography Haiku is the one one could really do without. Very strange sound, and a mixed bag - Milcho Leviev plays very good solos, though ... Among the other new ones is the umpteenth Cal Tjader compilation ...

BTW - I think that teaming of Earl Hines and Jaki Byard for the 1965 Berlin Jazz Festival was one of J.E. Berendt's greatest ideas - there was an LP of them for MPS, too - now that's an item Universal should put on the reissues list! -
When I do a search for obscure in thread titles only, I get plenty of results - I remember the one with the covers. Welcome to the board!
-
If I were Mosaic, I'd do his MGM sessions - they're better than one might think on first sight. I bought the two LPs that Cal Tjader plays on, and they are extremely versatile and musical.

There are nice clips from his 1965 Berlin concert, some with Jaki Byard, on youtube. Fatha was one of the three or four greatest timeless jazz pianists! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNJRLinVXgs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-rTrpa_xfs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyrzEULLxYs -
Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
mikeweil replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
I didn't dare mention that one, but I think about it just like you say! -
I guess he thinks they make it one of a kind ...
-
I wonder if any of the German members here knows a mail order shop for these sleeves in Germany - I ran out of shelf space too. Somehow it's easier for me to sell books right now, as I already sorted out many CDs during previous years ...
-
Monk Montgomery on electric bass guitar or acoustic upright here?
-
Bobby Jaspar LP on Swing - he asks for $ 1.299.00 .....

Clark doing standards doesn't thrill me - I keep the Blue Note trios, but I like other pianists better with that kind of repertoire. The material on the "Standards" disc was originally issued on 45's and meant to capitlize on Red Garland's juke box hits, but failed - not Clark's cup of tea, methinks. That's why I rank that Time session so high - he plays his own stuff, and without horns he himself is so much more inside the music than when the horns play the melodies. "Cool Struttin" is a cool disc - I even like Jackie Mac on that one! But my Sonny Clark Blue Note favorite is the originally unissued session with Kenny Burrell and Clifford Jordan.
