What live music are you going to see tonight?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Oto for Konstrukt with special guest Alexander Hawkins having enjoyed a couple of their albums I'll be very interested to hear the band live. I'm hoping AH brings his organ as well as the piano -
Looks interesting. Do I wish it wasn't solo. Not sure. Mary Halvorson's solo album, Meltframe, is out 4th September http://www.amazon.com/Meltframe-Mary-Halvorson/dp/B0133G18B2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1439074642&sr=8-3&keywords=mary+halvorson Can't remember if this has been mentioned here before but it's all other peoples tunes. Should be interesting: 1. Cascades (Oliver Nelson)2. Blood (Annette Peacock)3. Cheshire Hotel (Noël Akchoté)4. Sadness (Ornette Coleman)5. Solitude (Duke Ellington)6. Ida Lupino (Carla Bley)7. Aisha (McCoy Tyner)8. Platform (Chris Lightcap)9. When (Tomas Fujiwara)10. Leola (Roscoe Mitchell) Looks interesting. Do I wish it wasn't solo. Not sure. I think a solo disc could work nicely. She's covered most other ensemble sizes from duet to Septet. Anything with 'Blood', 'Ida Lupino' and 'Sadness' should sound good. Interesting to see Akchote on the list

In this is Tuesday, it must be Stonehenge

The Edgware Road area has been known to me for the last 25 years or so as very definitely having a strong Middle Eastern flavour. Glad to hear you had a positive experience in the restaurant to balance the unpleasantness on the street. Areas of the city are certainly more multicultural than others and many areas are distinguished by the predominance of one or two ethnic communities. In my years here those areas have changed to reflect different migration trends. Dalston, home of Cafe Oto and The Vortex, was distinctly West Indian in the 80s but is now very Turkish who in their turn are being replaced by predominantly white young hipsters. For me, one of the great things about this city is the way it changes (although sadly not always for the best e.g. Bev's point about wealth disparity) -

Last art exhibition you visited?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Heard good things about that exhibition. I recently saw some Frosts at Abbot Hall in Kendal. Their St Ives show is small but perfectly formed. There's another one on at Pallant House in Chichester which I hope to see soon - easier than Leeds -
The Black Saint box is a revelation. Some great James Newton on it too

I'll take quality over quantity any day

How does Hamid feel about being usurped as your wife's favourite drummer? Be sure to break it to him gently As with your last Hemingway live review last week this reminds me to listen to a trio I haven't paid much attention to for a long time. Time to dig out the LP of 'Right Down Your Alley'

Nice review Steve.Sounds like a great evening. "not a thought to put on any music for the hour ride home" the quiet journey home is always an indication of a good night's live music I've slept on both Hemingway and Ehrlich's output for a decade or so. Your writing gets me thinking it's time to re-engage with them both -

and his livelihood with it. -
Good call. I recently picked up Arild Andersen's ECM box that collects his his 1970's quartet albums. Aaltonen is on a couple of them, and he really impressed me. I'll have to check out those more recent TUM recordings. Is there a particular one that you've enjoyed most? His quartet recording 'Conclusions' is excellent as is the sextet 'To Future Memories'. Both on TUM

Juhani Aaltonen, especially for his recent work on TUM

Peter Kuhn - Ghost of A Trance [Hat Hut] Enjoying this with thanks to Leeway

I find it hard to express my anger and distaste for this individual. Scumbag should be stripped naked, covered in fresh blood (not his own) and dropped back in the bush. He'd then soon realise what hunting really is. What it isn't is using advanced technology (guns, vehicles, crossbows, gps) to find and kill, from a safe distance, magnificent wild creatures. The man's a coward more than anything else -
Yes: Do not buy a single other record until you buy all of the following: Don Pullen Mosaic Select Don Pullen Black Saint/Soul Note Box Set Carter-Bradford - Flight For Four Carter-Bradford - Self-Determination Music Carter-Bradford Mosaic Select Carter-Bradford - No U Turn Horace Tapscott - The Dark Tree If you think I'm kidding you're mistaken! as colinmce says. Please do not sleep on the Carter/Bradfords....great music, consistently. I'm slightly less of a Pullen fan but the Black Saint box will give you hours of very valuable listening with some excellent musicians contributing throughout

Joe McPhee with the Bill Smith Ensemble - Visitation [Sackville] this had eluded me for quite a while. Remedied now and certainly meeting expectations

Someone buy this! It doesn't get any better than this music or presentation-wise and that's got to be a give-away price if it wasn't transatlantic I'd buy it to give to someone and open their ears -
Globe Unity - 73 Live in Wuppertal [FMP] sheer musicianship, individual and collective shines through the 'authentic' live recording It is that. I bought it without knowing what to expect. The fact that it's not collective playing was a surprise but a very pleasant one

Horrible news.....very sorry to hear this. Enjoyed so many performances and recordings over the years.

Pleased he's still active. Saw him a looong time ago - with Max Roach in the 60s and Woody Shaw in the 70s. I'm jealous - have never seen him. I REALLY would have liked to see the Strata East reunion in London earlier this year! STRATA EAST LIVE SOUNDS SUBLIME AT BARBICAN It was very good and great to see Cowell in the flesh
