  1. Chuck, I'd love to help you out here, but I'm afraid I am too happy that Jim broke the ice. I had been thinking about an introduction to my upcoming test, some words of warning and advice, but Jim said it better (as usual) and his compilation seems even more controversial than mine will ever be. Go for the controversy I say, it's part of the essence of the music we (or I) call jazz.

    Funny Rat

Some stray bullets. No time for a coherent post, sorry. I have some Gumpert on the GDR Amiga label. Small group and large ensemble as I remember. I will check it when I return from my holidays next week. Send me a PM if I seem to have forgot Ubu. And as I am going from memory here, I also have an LP by Brötzmann, Ten Hove, and Bennink called Elements (is it on FMP?). It's been too long since I listened to it. I should put it on again. Any comments on that one? I have been transfering some stuff of the Chech pianist Ianci Körrössy from a Polish LP and a Chech 10" LP to my harddisk and this is another one playing within the European impressionist tradition (although quite a bit more baroque). This is more inside the swing bag than the other stuff discussed on this thread (rec. in the 50s & early 60s), but nonetheless very enjoyable and a very interesting illustration of how far you can go with melting jazz and classical approaches to the piano.
  4. Eastern Standard Time = GMT-5 ?? between 2 and 6 PM = GMT 19.00 - 23.00 come on people! THINK global! We're citizens of the WORLD in this cyberspace :rsly: anyhow, I'll bet this whole 100K thing is gonna blow gently past us anytime during the Christmas holidays and nobody's gonna notice...
  5. Will be checking this out next week when I'm on a decent connection again, looks great though!
  6. Andrew Steele - Natural and Agricultural History of Peat Moss (1826) AKA: Steele - On Peat Moss, reprint of Steele 1802 w/ extensive appendix added. Great read BTW

  11. oh that's it then
  12. interesting notion. If I find time I'll spin them both and listen for similarities.
  13. I went another route than Bruce; only after listening to this album I finally got what all the hype was about. Before that I had categorised Hank as yet another merely good tenor player who didn't play anything special. Soulstation changed that. Great album by a great player.
  14. again different years: 1949 - Lennie Tristano records some tracks with Konitz/Marsh 1956 - Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge (3 tracks) also 1956 - Miles Davis/Sonny Rollins - three tracks issued on Collector's Items also 1956 - Zoot Sims records an album in Paris 1958 - Tina Brooks - Minor Move 1992 - Joe Henderson Big Band (Verve): 3 tracks
  15. same date, different years: 1947 - Dizzy Gillespie records some stuff with his band. 1949 - Paul Smith cuts some sides for Savoy 1958 - Johnny Page and Chet Baker record several tracks of their album together 1960 - Coleman Hawkins - Night Hawk (Prestige) 1963 - Thelonious Monk - Big Band and Quartet in Concert
  16. again not the same year, but following sessions were held on 18 march 1961: Horace Parlan - On the Spur of the Moment 1966: Hank Mobley - A Slice of the Top 1963: Getz/Gilberto (probably a night session that ran into the 19th?) 1964: Freddie Roach - Brown Sugar (also ran into the 19th)
  17. FWIW, Mingus - Mingus (x5) was recorded 1963.09.23
  18. not the same year, but my dbase lists several dates that took place on 25 june, among which are True Blue (1960) and Andrew!!! (1964).
  19. you're not getting a "best" statement from me, but I have always LOVED the tracks with Fuller on Vol 3. Now somebody certainly had a LOT of vision putting these musicians together in the recording studio,.
  20. that was a great read Peter! just a reminder of this link from a performance at the dutch North Sea Jazz festival.

  23. could this be done in either the recommendations or the reissues forum? I would rather reserve the AotW forum for discussion within that specific framework.
