That's right! There doesn't seem to be any details on the ESP-DISK website, so who is actually releasing these discs? Is there somewhere I can find a bit more information about them?
-
Thanks guys. I guess it must have been the May 20, 1963 session that Jimmy was referring to. BTW I wonder what ever happened to that Horace Silver Tentette session from April 11-12, 1963? Does anyone know why that one has never seen the light of day?
-
I agree completely! Luckily, like you, I have the "Cool Sounds" CD and have burnt myself a replacement. But IMO an mp3 download DOES NOT constitute a satisfactory fix. They should have offered a replacement disc.

I'm part-way through Jimmy Heath's autobiography "I Walked With Giants" and he refers to records he made with Donald Byrd for Blue Note in 1963 that "weren't released then because of problems between Donald and Al Lion". I don't recall ever hearing Jimmy play on a Blue Note release. Does anyone know what recording he's referring to here and whether it was ever released? Plus, can anyone shed any light on the problems that Jimmy refers to between Donald Byrd and Alfred Lion? I seem to recall reading that Donald Byrd fell out with a lot of his friends at one time and actually gave up playing jazz.

There's a great new release out this week from Ogun of the Blue Note's playing live at Jazzclub De Hoop, Belgium in 1979 which I can heartily recommend. The full line-up is: Dudu Pukwana - alto sax Chris McGregor - piano Johnny Dyani - bass Louis Moholo - drums and Dudu & Louis are really on fire. It's already on my list of best records for 2012. I've also heard from Hazel Miller of Ogun Records that she's hoping to release some more Chris McGregor later in the year. Provisionally scheduled for release is his solo album, "In His Good Time" from 1977 and "The Brotherhood of Breath Live at Toulouse" which I assume is the album "Procession" from 1978. Neither of these have been out on CD and it will be wonderful to hear them again after all these years. His solo album in particular is lovely

He's not shown in the Bruyninckx Discography either. I must admit that I've not been able to detect two basses on any of the tracks on "Trio". But thereagain I DO have cloth ears

I don't know how the prices in euros stack up with the prices in dollars but I have bought quite a few Futura & Marge releases direct from Gerard Terrones via his website: Futura & Marge Records Service is fine and he replies promptly to e-mails if necessary' There are some great recordings on these labels.

I love Tom Rush...although I can't remember why Thanks for the link, Hardbop.

Bibles today.........................whatever tomorrow! NEVER respond to unsolicited e-mails.

I have both "Freedom" & "The Corrections" in my "to read" pile next to the bed. I really must put this pile into some sort of order....what, though?
-
I wish I had - only some excerpts so far, which were pretty good. Would be a great choice for a Mosaic Select. Yes, they really are excellent. IMO they're better than his recent ones on Mack Avenue but then, even slightly-lesser Gerald Wilson's are worth hearing. BTW quite a few of his Discovery albums are available on Amazon at quite reasonable prices

Read these three over the holidays. An excellent set of thrillers from Oz. Also read the latest by Kate Atkinson, |Again, very good - just like all her other ones! Started this yesterday. It has had very good reviews over here:

Keith Jarrett: The Koln Concert
Head Man replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Wow. Have you read the book about that concert? I think it's called "Just Like the Night". And of course Scorcese's Dylan documentary is built around that concert. I bought the Scorcese DVD when it came out a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. I haven't read the book you mention - I'll try and pick up a cheap copy if I find one. My recollection of the actual concert was that it was no big deal. At that period of my life I was seeing so much live music that it all became a bit of a blur. I was really surprised when it achieved mystical status later, based mainly I think, on one member of the audience shouting out "Judas". I don't even remember hearing that, BTW. However, the music was so loud and distorted that it was difficult to hear anything! -

I was at the (in)famous Bob Dylan concert at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1966. Loved the first half...hated the second..just like nearly everyone else there. Thank God he never took any notice of us! -

Thanks for the link, Bev. I've just finished listening to it - very interesting. The Koln Concert was one of the first of his ECM albums that I bought (I think "Facing You" was probably the first) and I've always enjoyed it. In fact I'm listening to it whilst I type this...lovely!
