  1. These Venus CDs by Charlap are all excellent - better than the Blue Notes IMHO. Excellent sound, playing & production values. Get 'em if you can. The Washingtons are on at least one of them. Bill Stewart is the drummer on another.
  2. Needs to be on CD.
  3. The other one is "It Just Got To Be". I ordered both of them.
  4. All good choices. I'd add Phineas Newborn.
  5. Oct. 3-19. Nice lineup. http://www.santafejazzfestival.com
  6. Poor Woody. What a life. I miss hearing new playing from him. Looking forward to the previously unissued Hill. Recently managed to find the 2CD set Bemsha Swing. Amazing!!
  7. I thought you needed a root canal.
  8. Yeah - I see them now. Everyone should get The Great Jazz Trio: Autumn Leaves when it comes out. It's a "killer". Interesting that CBS / Sony passed on some of these & an "independent" picked them up.
  9. My wife & I have visited Santa Fe since 1970. Live here full time for the last several years. Yes, there have been changes - but, overall I wouldn't want to be anyplace else. The food overall is great in both the trendy & non-trendy restaurants. All depends on what you like.
  10. The first I've heard of 441 records. Are they going to release other originally Japanese issues? What are the sound & other production values like?
  11. As Cedric the comedian once said in a commercial, "it ain't that bad". Not many chances to hear Chambers or Bartz these days, so I feel it's worth getting.
  12. I'm enjoying it too. Friedman is one of those "underrated" pianists IMHO. You'll need to pop for the 88's Japanese issue. It sounds great. I doubt that Columbia / Sony will ever issue it in the U.S..
  13. Belden's Turandot is a great CD. I was lucky enough to have someone bring a copy back for me from Japan when it was first issued. $75 - wow!
  14. Frank Wess
  15. I have this in a Japanese mini-LP format (COCB 50614). 4 original Williams compositions (44 minutes total playing time). Recorded Dec. 20, 1966. Intricate trio interplay. Not sure what happened to him. He appeared to be trying to extend beyond be-bop conventions. I like it.
  16. I like the Venus / Sunnyside issues. He also has some excellent CDs on Reservoir (a label I see rarely discussed).
  17. J.J.Johnson Mosaic Mulligan Meets Hodges Giuffre: The Easy Way Hawes: For Real Coltrane & Quinichette: Cattin' Cannonballl: Know What I Mean? Booker Ervin: Song Book Teddy Edwards: Together Again
  18. I tried to sell this on the old BNBB a year or so ago, & nobody wanted it. Now that I donated it & don't have it, there's interest. So it goes.
  19. I'm a retired physician. Practiced medicine for 30 years. Do pretty much whatever I want to now. Love jazz, movies, books, art in general.
  20. Whoa!! Never saw that "cover" before.
  21. Give 2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West a spin in memoriam. His playing is just gorgeous on it.

    Cecil McBee

I just listened to The Dark Tree set, & McBee is certainly a vital contibutor to that quartet.

    Phil Grenadier

I know I'll get grief from someone about this, but why don't you just buy the Fresh Sounds CDs from Cadence??
  24. I take it all (or at least most of it) back. Got 5 out of 7. Didn't get the IAI Bley / Gilmore & Air Mail. Since my original order was over $50, they didn't charge shipping even though the total wound up under $50.
  25. Still haven't heard anything about my order. I'll resist the obvious 2 word profanity, but how long does it take to hear from these guys??? Never ordered from them before. Might not order again. Let's see what the "fill" % is.
