  1. They're junk, as is about everything from their parent label Membran, but very low cost.
  2. I don't much like the Silva and Burrell BYG's, overly dense, I can't make sense of them. I do like the Arthur Jones BYG quite a bit, was able to pick it up as a bonus on a Clifford Thornton reissue. Moncur's New Africa is the gem of the BYG catalog to me, but a different bag than what's being discussed here. I've heard parts of that Ric Colbeck album, would love to see it on CD.
  3. That's also what I remember. He was, of course, on Milestone by the time it was released, but with Impulse when it was recorded. I don't know enough about the business to know how those things work - was it customary to seek permission for a vault release like that? I know that the horrid 'Dylan' album, put out by Columbia when he was with Asylum, was released "without permission", and was a sore point (though they obviously worked it out). Outtakes from 'Self Portrait', what a nauseating concept.
  4. Gary Peacock and Roy Haynes? Quite the rhythm section!
  5. I bought that CD as soon as it came out. Also owned the vinyl of 'There Will Be Another You' back in the day, and have always really liked it. Sound quality is totally acceptable.
  6. Which is troubling. Welcome to the new normal, I guess.
  7. Agreed, RIP.

    Albert Stinson

What differences do you hear due to Stinson replacing Carter? Great article, btw.
  9. Apart from the subject matter and assertations in these books, how is the actual writing itself? I find it hard to read poorly written books, regardless of their points, and find great pleasure in well written books on subjects that interest me.
  10. That set remains the only CD source of the McLean 'Hipnosis' session from 1967!
  11. Sold mine for a little over $200 on ebay about three years ago. Glad to pick this up for about 10% of that price!
  12. Mongo made Herbie Hancock a very rich jazz musician at a very young age.
  13. Funny Funky Rib Crib has had previous CD reissues. Wonder if any of them are better?
  14. I got to see him solo at Rosemont College a number of years ago, and ask him about his time with Archie Shepp. He was very engaging, had a great story about French revolutionaries storming one of their concerts. I stumbled into a cheap CD copy of Questions/Answers from a Japanese seller on ebay (was able to bundle shipping for about a dozen discs), and am glad to have it.
  15. Agreed, Concord will hold onto it tightly to see what ill-conceived Craft sets they can throw together.
  16. Thanks so much. I have older CD issue of that, but the bonus cuts on this one look great, so I'll grab it from DeepDiscount next time I place an order with them.
  17. Thanks, I'll watch for the bundle if it's at a meaningful savings, though 'Us' and 'Mother Africa' on their own may be enough for me.
  18. What is that? a reissue of something?
  19. Anyone have a good USA source for acquiring the CD box set? I only see the LP box set available on Amazon and DustyGroove.
  20. Agreed, but I love the Patrick Roques CD cover (and his BN cover work in general, he did, he really had the Reid Miles thing perfected):
  21. True, if you have sufficient space and money, and no pull towards the original album art. I actually have kept both the McMaster's and the RVG's of these three albums, and have not been going for the BN Mosaics. Incidentally, the same dynamic happened with Jimmy Smith's The Sermon and Housparty, where the McMaster's separate the two sessions, and the RVG's have the original LP running order, which mixes the two sessions. Also different bonus cuts between the two sets of releases. and I took the same tack, own both the McMaster's and the RVG's.
