The nice thing about Philadelphia music is that they undergrade their CDs. Many listed as NM are still sealed, while the orders I have received graded VG+ have been NM. It is surprising how many long out of print jazz CDs can be purchased so cheaply. I don't think that I missed anything in the low priced jazz CDs under $6 on my want list and I bought a few more pricey items as well. My latest order is scheduled to arrive today.

It gives me another reason to avoid malls, which I have done for years…

"That's be cash on the barrelhead, son!" I took my wife to a country concert recently and it had all the bad elements of a rock concert, too much volume, distorted lyrics, monotonous songs. It was a miserable experience and I didn't make it through the headliner's set. I still listen to solo albums by Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, the Flying Burrito Bros. (before they disbanded the first time), and some others. I never did get into the Eagles.

Right on both counts. Track 3 is not Red Norvo nor is it a Pablo recording…

Track 2 is Coleman Hawkins. Track 3 is definitely not Bags. Track 5 is "Midgets." Track 7 is James Carter playing "Alone Together." Track 8 is not Gary Burton. Track 10 is a Duke Ellington song. Track 11 is "Blood Count" and John Tchicai is the tenor saxophonist. Track 12 is "Peace." Track 13 features Phil Woods and Johnny Griffin.

Track 5 is "Midgets." Harry "Sweets" Edison is not present. Track 6 does feature Clark Terry, his unmistakable sound is hard to duplicate. Track 7 is "Alone Together."

Maybe Thom hasn't posted it, this was the link he gave me.

Putting together a BFT is a great way to rediscover things I haven't played in awhile, including some long out of print albums, imports and the occasional obscurity. Here is the link: https://thomkeith.net/index.php/blindfold-tests/

I heard Giveton Gelin sitting in with the Bobby Watson Quartet at Smoke back in 2019 and he became one to watch.

The Boston Strangler, Stonefingers and Doctor Strangeglove. The Yankees’ Hector Lopez was pretty bad in the field. -

I agree it was dumb, but Olson was alert enough to make the throw, not all defenders do, think Dick Stuart... -

Not a great game for the Braves last night, but they did pull off this defensive gem: https://www.mlb.com/news/braves-turn-first-triple-play-of-2023-season?partnerId=zh-20230726-982728-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20230726-982728-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=gVLDSZ%2FRg2OnW9BA10Fn5MfsVqxnFwP85HKEgLoel97qq8A41k0yrSAgF8c6kiRH&bt_ts=1690375484454 -

I remember seeing that film in the theatre when it was released. -
I enjoyed her Verve CD and I am looking to grab her debut CD.

From the article I read about Anchor Brewing, several factors were involved in their closing: The union achieved a rather large pay increase a few years ago. Changes to their established packaging were not well received. The Japanese firm that acquired them a few years ago didn't seem to know what they were doing. It's always sad when an established firm around for over a century closes because of the incompetence of the current management. It is much like having a favorite local restaurant. When the owners decide to sell and retire, the new owners promptly raise prices and change the menu drastically, then wonder where all the long time customers are.

A strong pass! I have no interest in buying overpriced LP reissues of music that I have long enjoyed and owned on CD.

When writing for a monthly magazine, where you might get 3 or 4 reviews assigned at most, do you want to spend your time blasting substandard releases or praising music that you enjoyed? When I was able to write prolifically for one outlet (which paid well), I often pitched nearly everything that arrived in my mailbox and panned releases that merited it. But now I focus on things that attract my attention and deserve repeated listening, rather than condemning uninspired CDs by young, little known artists playing all originals that will quickly fade from memory, or mediocre vocalists who have no idea how to interpret a well known lyric. I was once challenged by an editor for giving "too many" four star reviews (I hate the star ratings system, one should be able to figure out how much the reviewer liked the release from reading the review). My response was that I no longer pitched reviews of bad or mediocre releases. I took Downbeat to task for wasting space on a review of a new Kenny G CD and also featuring it in their "hot box." I was surprised when they printed my letter verbatim.

Ken Dryden replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Eric Dolphy collaborations are my favorites in the Mingus discography.
