  1. Not a great game for the Braves last night, but they did pull off this defensive gem: https://www.mlb.com/news/braves-turn-first-triple-play-of-2023-season?partnerId=zh-20230726-982728-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20230726-982728-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=gVLDSZ%2FRg2OnW9BA10Fn5MfsVqxnFwP85HKEgLoel97qq8A41k0yrSAgF8c6kiRH&bt_ts=1690375484454
  2. I remember seeing that film in the theatre when it was released.
  3. I was surprised that wasn't mentioned in the liner notes, but I've heard enough live versions of "My Favorite Things" with Coltrane and Dolphy that it seemed incomplete to me, since it started so unusually. I thought both "When LIghts Are Low" and "Africa" were the nicest surprises on this CD.
  4. I've heard the first three tracks today and the sound is better than I expected from some remarks. It is particularly enjoyable on headphones. One thing that nobody has mentioned, isn't the opening missing from "My Favorite Things?" It sounds very different with Dolphy soloing before Coltrane.
  5. The period when Eric Dolphy was a part of John Coltrane’s group has long been my favorite. I am very much looking forward to this CD arriving tomorrow.
  6. I enjoyed her Verve CD and I am looking to grab her debut CD.
  7. I didn't think that Don Schlitten operated that way, it just seemed odd at the time I received the LP and read the liner notes.
  8. I have a Xanadu Monk LP that this engineer recorded the same way. I wonder if Monk's estate sued over its release, or was it authorized prior to release?
  9. From the article I read about Anchor Brewing, several factors were involved in their closing: The union achieved a rather large pay increase a few years ago. Changes to their established packaging were not well received. The Japanese firm that acquired them a few years ago didn't seem to know what they were doing. It's always sad when an established firm around for over a century closes because of the incompetence of the current management. It is much like having a favorite local restaurant. When the owners decide to sell and retire, the new owners promptly raise prices and change the menu drastically, then wonder where all the long time customers are.
  10. A strong pass! I have no interest in buying overpriced LP reissues of music that I have long enjoyed and owned on CD.
  11. When writing for a monthly magazine, where you might get 3 or 4 reviews assigned at most, do you want to spend your time blasting substandard releases or praising music that you enjoyed? When I was able to write prolifically for one outlet (which paid well), I often pitched nearly everything that arrived in my mailbox and panned releases that merited it. But now I focus on things that attract my attention and deserve repeated listening, rather than condemning uninspired CDs by young, little known artists playing all originals that will quickly fade from memory, or mediocre vocalists who have no idea how to interpret a well known lyric. I was once challenged by an editor for giving "too many" four star reviews (I hate the star ratings system, one should be able to figure out how much the reviewer liked the release from reading the review). My response was that I no longer pitched reviews of bad or mediocre releases. I took Downbeat to task for wasting space on a review of a new Kenny G CD and also featuring it in their "hot box." I was surprised when they printed my letter verbatim.
  12. The Eric Dolphy collaborations are my favorites in the Mingus discography.
  13. Is any of this festival webcast live?
  14. I enjoyed the Saturday broadcast of the Braves-Rays game, except one hapless Fox announcer kept saying a fly ball was heading to Michael Harris (who plays center field) when it is was actually going to Ronald Acuña Jr. in right field instead, a mistake he made at least twice. I'm surprised his on air partner didn't correct him...
  15. There are several Alec Guinness British comedies I need to watch again: The Ladykillers Kind Hearts and Coronets The Man in the White Suit Captain’s Paradise Our Man in Havana
  16. I do as well, but ordered it anyway. Selling off my current BN CDs will help pay for it.
  17. I have avoided these websites and need to close my Facebook account. I am on MeWe because they respect privacy.
  18. Smooth jazz always annoyed me with the repetitious, empty solos and the boring backdrops. Grover Washington was quite capable when he played straight ahead or classical, but most saxophonists tainted their sound where the smooth element never disappeared completely when they tried to play straight ahead.
  19. The poor guy spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues and only had 594 at bats. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ranewme01.shtml
  20. I liked Gene Lees’ story about storing some clothing for Wiody Herman. Bill Evans borrowed his monogrammed sport coat then met Lees and Herman somewhere, wearing the coat. Evans asked Woody how he like the coat and he replied that it looks familiar. Evans responded, “It’s even monogramed,” then opened it to show the initials W.H. “That stands for William Heavens…”
  21. His son Jerry is running the label, the most recent release is by the David Hazeltine Trio: I was happy that Jerry added me to his promo mailing list!
  22. Pepsi was always too damned sweet, it was a poor substitute for Coke.
  23. Matchbook Art School alumni, all?
