Previous thread I started on this very topic (or pretty close, anyway): Relatively-progressive piano trio recs in the 60's Edit: Lord, I'm just noticing this thread dates back nearly 12 years ago.

Seriously groovy! Will have to give more of this a listen soon. -
LF: Jimmy Heath - Love and Understanding CD
Rooster_Ties replied to felser's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think I've got one, and might well be willing to let go of it for whatever's reasonable (or a donation to Jim for the board, which I'd be even more inclined to do). Can't remember how much I liked it, or if I kept it the last time I was thinning the herd (or in this case, the 'heard'). -
A friend here in the DC area just joined a wind ensemble (small concert band, I'm told, of about 50 players) -- and she's going to be playing Alto Clarinet. She's played regular and bass clarinet for 40+ years, but this is her first (ever) experience playing alto. Any resources (online or otherwise) that she should know about, as she dives into this endeavor? She said the instrument is really a lot softer than she was expecting -- a LOT less heft to the tone than a bass clarinet (which she's also played off and on for a couple decades, at least). She's looking at possibly getting a new mouthpiece, and (at least) definitely a new ligature (which it's badly in need of) -- and hoping that will help with the tone (but she isn't sure how much is related to the quality of the current mouthpiece). I briefly played regular (standard) clarinet in junior high myself, and even more briefly played bass clarinet (around that same time) -- and always thought the idea of an alto clarinet seemed nice -- but understand that the actual instruments themselves are often less forgiving models (or maybe the whole instrument is generally less well-developed -- I really don't know). Anyway, in the abstract, I've always wished guys like Don Byron played alto (clarinet) more, and that the instrument was used more often. I've started some other threads about the instrument here over the years (I think Joe Lovano is one of the few modern guys to play one much), but of course the discussion is always pretty limited. Anyway, any good on-line resources for discussion that I can pass along to my friend? From actual players, possibly with advice about instruments, and what to do to (maybe) get a better sound out of hers (if any thing can be done, which of course, I have no real idea about). Many thanks!

Mission Impossible – The Television Scores (6CD set)
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
Very curious. I'd probably bite for $40, but not $100. -
Tempting!! Anyone have any links to any clips? I'll have to look on YouTube too, when I'm not on mobile. Seems right up my alley. Edit: found an NPR story! Haven't had the chance to listen yet, but at 10 minutes, there are bound to be several good samples. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125181048

Everyone ought to jump on this one... Joe Henderson And Kikuchi. Hino In Concert I paid like $34 for an earlier Japanese issue of it (from Dusty Groove), and saw it priced even higher back then. Fantastic album, recorded one day right before or after (I forget which) Joe's "Live In Japan" for Milestone. Includes a Joe original not found anywhere else too, the opening track (Sunrise in Tokyo, iirc).

My problem is that I have a rather simple personal life (and barely even keep a calendar for myself -- and that's been the story of my life for decades)... ...but in my 9-5 job, I manage the calendar of the single busiest person in the entire organization I work for, with a calendar that makes me dizzy just looking at it (with 6-10 different appointments every singe day, week in and week out).

serial composition: Unraveling the Knots of the 12 Tones

Quick, other than the big three (Arnold, Alban, and Anton) -- name your favorite serial composer... Mine? Roger Sessions! His symphonies (especially 6-9), are divine! -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Rooster_Ties replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So what was the problem with the Selects that made them unprofitable? And at what "per disc" price would they have had to charge for them to be equally profitable to the big boxes? Was it just an economy of scale? - in terms of the amount of cost per release, regardless of whether it was a 3-disc Select, or a 6-disc big-box? I'm sure I knew the answer years ago, but have long since forgotten. -
No idea if legit, but both these Horos are pretty fantastic. I have Other Voices, Other Blues on original vinyl, and New Steps came out a couple years ago as a high-quality (probably grey-market?) euro CD complete with original artwork with new liner-notes - a really high-quality release actually. Highly recommended material.

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/bill-cosby-scandal/bill-cosby-attorney-alleged-victim-has-made-mockery-settlemenet-agreement-n396136 Cosby Attorney: Alleged Victim Has Made 'Mockery' of Confidentiality Agreement Cosby's attorney, Patrick O'Connor, believes the release of Cosby's deposition transcript violated the terms of the settlement. Noting that the woman is not asking to void the entire settlement agreement, he wrote that "obviously, she wants to keep what she was paid" but that she "cannot simply pick and choose which contractual obligations will be void and which will stand." So on top of everything else, Cosby and his Lawyers are also now concerned about getting back the money from one of the women with whom he settled out of court.

http://www.theonion.com/article/woman-assaulted-celebrity-just-needs-sit-tight-40--50893 Woman Assaulted By Celebrity Just Needs To Sit Tight For 40 Years Until Dozens More Women Corroborate Story NEW YORK—Realizing she might as well relax a little until her allegations are deemed credible in 2055 or so, 28-year-old Jill Garza confirmed Tuesday that she just needed to sit tight for around 40 years until a few dozen more women corroborated her story of being sexually assaulted by a beloved celebrity. “There’s nothing really for me to do except hang out for a few decades and just keep an eye on how many other women come forward with stories horrifyingly similar to mine,” said Garza, adding that she didn’t really see any other option except waiting around until she was nearly 70 as similar accusations slowly accumulated. “Maybe I’ll kind of set the ball rolling and actually won’t have to wait more than a decade to be taken seriously, but for now I’ll just plan to stay put and check in with my believability as a rape victim every couple of years.” Garza went on to say that the man who assaulted her would likely never actually go to jail, so there wasn’t any point even thinking about that at all.

Isn't this the source for the only Lee Morgan version of the Maupin tune "The Chief"? - the studio version being on the still UNreleased half of that one Morgan session that was used as bonus tracks on "The Sixth Sense"? iirc

Mohawk hair, who besides Sonny Rollins?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
So regarding Mohawks, this "some jazz musicianS (plural) in the 50's" thing -- specifically the plural part -- is a load of crap then. Correct? The Wikipedia article reads that way, but I think I saw a couple other online sources with the same plural reference. -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Rooster_Ties replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Sam Rivers Select is amazing. A true gift that his most recent Florida big band was as well-documented as it was, between the 3 discs on the Select, plus Aurora. Don't miss out! -
Thank you, Allen. The handwriting on the wall (now, finally) is as clear as day, and it's a shame that people still want to see wiggle room in Cosby's alibi ("yeah, but he never admitted it wasn't consensual"). No shit, Sherlock -- he never did, and that's not likely to ever happen. I wasn't yet (personally) 'completely sure' of the likelyhook of his guilt until this transcript became unsealed -- though as I said before, I do subscribe strongly to the "where there's smoke, there's usually fire" line of thought. But this is nearly the nail in the coffin, as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully some civil cases will further add some clarity, if not for the public, at least for the victims.

Mohawk hair, who besides Sonny Rollins?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm seeing that both of the Wikipeia references to some "jazz musicians (plural)" wearing Mohawks both go to sources that only refer to Sonny Rollins -- so maybe he really was the only one (and the plural is downright wrong). or were there any others? -
Where there's smoke, there's usually fire. And there's been a shit-ton of smoke surrounding Cosby, with close to 30 accusers. I for one am relieved that some real evidence seems to have come to light, one way or the other. The court of public opinion is the least desirable jurisdiction/venue to render judgement, but given the statute of limitations, it may be all that's left - short of what will surely be civil cases. But better the world have a sense of where the wind is blowing on this now, than never.

Random question du jour... Who else besides Sonny Rollins sported a Mohawk hairstyle, either in the 50's (especially), but whenever else as long as we're on the subject. Saw online about American soldiers (paratroopers especially) having Mohawks in WWII, primarily in the military activities in France. But the Wkkipedia entry and other online sources mention jazz musicians (plural) in the 50's, but seemingly Sonny is the only one mentioned by name. Who else? And what approximate years did Sonny (and any others) have Mohawks? I'm not that steeped in Somny Rollins' music or lore, and though I really should know this, it's yet another area of jazz history where I'm pretty thin. And any other jazz-non-standard-hair-styles discussion too, as I suppose this could be the all-purpose thread for this. Thanks!!

Somebody should jump on that Carmell Jones Select, which is out of print iirc.

Has the bottom fallen out of the Mosaic market?
Rooster_Ties replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't think it's the case that many (any?) sets are actually selling below their original list price -- but, rather, that they've lost some of their value as compared with what were previously even higher prices on eBay (meaning higher than today). In most cases, I think almost any Mosaic set will sell for at least $25 per disc (in terms of CD's), or pretty close to that, anyway. The only exceptions might be for something like the Woody Shaw CBS sessions, which is now arguably bested by the more recent box set of that same material (complete will additional material, even). Still, I often see the Woody Shaw sets listed for between $80 and $120 (which is still more than $25 per disc), but what they're actually selling for - I can't really say. EDIT: my comments about prices are based mostly on what I've seen on eBay, and Dusty Groove.
