  1. I only know this one track (from a VA comp), but really love it -- a remake of Johnny Dyani's "Kalahari" (aka "Lonely flower in the village", as it's titled on the 20+ minute long, CD-only bonus track from Dyani's Song For Biko) This track is really wonderful, and I wish they'd reissue the entire album on CD. RIP
  2. A friend hooked me up with burns of this set about 6 months ago, until I could find a real one that wouldn’t break the bank. Not in a huge rush, but if anyone has any more leads for something under $40, that’d be awesome. Thx!
  3. Tried to add it to my cart, and it says it’s already gone — despite the main page saying 1 copy is available. Alas, I tried to be that someone — but some someone done already grabbed it (maybe eons ago, for all we know?).
  4. That session with Lee is as good as any session from the entire Elvin Jones BN Mosaic. Maybe every track isn’t a 10/10 — but on balance, it’s some very strong playing and material — and one of the few piano-less dates Lee ever recorded.
  5. Maybe some sort of Spinal Tap tribute?
  6. Nothing but respect for Bruce Springsteen — but I think the only full-length songs of his I’ve ever heard (except back in high school on the radio, mid 80’s)… …is when I’ve happened to catch him on the late night talk shows. We’ve been DVR’ing Seth ❤️ (incl. the last 15 minutes of Fallon), and sometimes Colbert — for a decade. And we usually watch the musical guests (but barely half the regular guests). Springsteen just isn’t in my wheelhouse (neither is Dylan, though I do like Oh Mercy).
  7. Whew! So glad to hear such a positive report, Dan, even if it took a bunch of headache and worry to get there.
  8. Dan - sure hoping everything works out ok for you, your family, and those horses.
  9. I was sampling/streaming the first few minutes of every track last night off Pandora, and I too wondered if it was a live recording. Pandora doesn’t let you FF within a track, so I never heard the ends of any of the tunes (to hear if there was applause) — but I intended to follow up and see if it was all on YouTube later, to see if that was the case. Definitely has that “recorded in a club” sort of acoustic to it — (which, in and of itself, is NOT a dealbreaker or anything).
  10. Peter Losin’s database has these recordings for the tune (fewer than I expected, only 10)… October 26, 1956 Rudy van Gelder Studio, Hackensack My Funny Valentine 5:56 September 9, 1958 Persian Room, Plaza Hotel, New York My Funny Valentine 10:25 July 26, 1963 La Pinède, Juan-les-Pins My Funny Valentine 9:54 February 12, 1964 Lincoln Center, New York My Funny Valentine 14:54 July 14, 1964 Shinjuku Kohseinenkin Hall, Tokyo My Funny Valentine 12:41 October 1, 1964 Salle Pleyel, Paris My Funny Valentine 12:24 October 11, 1964 Teatro dell' Arte, Milan My Funny Valentine 11:47 December 22, 1965 Plugged Nickel Club, Chicago My Funny Valentine 16:40 December 23, 1965 Plugged Nickel Club, Chicago My Funny Valentine 13:59 May 21, 1966 Oriental Theatre, Portland My Funny Valentine 11:33
  11. I’ve been on a fence about getting this one (I’m always looking for reasons not to get things, so I don’t end up getting everything)… …but if it had had included Tina’s "Street Singer" I’m not sure if I could resist. Still mulling it over.
  12. Fabulous telling. Thanks for sharing that!
  13. Yes, please do -- Dan, when you can. Will be thinkin' about you for the next 3 days at least, and hoping for better news than otherwise.
  14. Spinning Code Violations as I'm typing this, and Gary is indeed on fire, though in his own sort of restrained way. I've said it before, but his flute playing is as masterful as it comes -- and he's the only wind doubler who's flute-playing and approach specifically reminds me of their approach on saxophone. Easily my all-time favorite jazz flute-player, and one of my top-5 tenor-players.
  15. Dan, and everyone/anyone else, take the very best care. Stay safe!
  16. Oh, man, I don’t think I’ve ever heard those. Do tell!! — if there are any juicer details.
  17. Here’s one cut from that same album, that doesn’t seem to be blocked —not sure though if it’s the same one as was posted (the one that won’t play).
  18. No guess on the kid, but is that Philly Joe?
  19. Me wanna see moar of the greats as kids!!
  20. I’d love to know that too!! And a semi-related question too: I’d also love to know how much Sam Rivers made off of royalties from “Beatrice” over the years (especially broken down by decade at least, or by year). Not a mint, I realize, but I understand it wasn’t nothing either. Backstage while waiting to get an autograph, I heard Sam mention to someone (when I heard him play in Topeka in 2008) that the royalties from Beatrice was his ‘retirement’ (or something to that effect).
  21. If only!!!!
  22. I’ve been sorta tempted by the Hubbard one with Phil Ranelin on trombone. I’ve got most all of Ranelin’s own leader dates, and I understand this may be the only live document of him with Hubbard (I think that’s right). I’ve streamed it a few times, but this sale price makes it tempting.
  23. I know! That’s what I was worried about too!
  24. I think it’s probably similar to when you try and remember something, and can’t — but later (sometimes at little as 10-20 minutes later, but after you’ve activity stopped trying to think of it)… …suddenly it can occur to you, almost out of nowhere. It’s like the brain doesn’t really stop thinking about it, even if you’ve stopped actively trying to remember it. In other words, it’s a slightly different area of the brain at work, even if it’s accessing the same information — just in a different way. All of that’s totally conjecture on my part, but I’ve had that happen a hundred times over the years (not with music, but the example I just gave).
  25. And yet another single surfaces -- presumably vocal(!) versions of "Dee Dee" and "I'm Through" (aka "Algerian suite" per my previous post). Here's where I got that from... https://www.popsike.com/Hank-Bagby-Dee-Dee-Im-Through-Protone-RARE-SOUL-45-LA-BOP-JAZZ-1965/292806274771.html I'd be SUPER curious to hear these vocal(!!) versions of "Dee Dee" and "I'm Through" (aka "Algerian Suite") -- but they do not appear to be uploaded anywhere online, at least not that I can find (with Google).
