  1. I thought I'd done this before (this post is from a thread from over three years ago, entitled 5 Favorite Conns to recommend). I've added a lot of red to the post, to highlight the "wasn't released until the 70's or later" dates... Like I said a few posts back, a shitload of my all-time favotite BN dates weren't released until the 70's, or way later.
  2. Me too. Although I don't take any of it too seriously (and plunk down next to no cold hard cash for any of it), there is sometimes (occasionally) some mighty good shit to be found on the radio. Sure, not 99% of the time, but that 1% is pure magic!! Pop culture (including pop music) -- or at least some of it -- can be mighty facinating to be an observer of. Hell, I occasionally even watch brief segments of the Country Music Channel -- and I pretty much HATE modern country-pop music. But the production (or overproduction), and packaging, and "salesmanship" of that stuff is sometimes an amazing sight to behold. Evil, sure, but facinating occasionally.
  3. Actually, there's a shit-load of "wasn't released until the 70's" BN dates that are among my all-time favorites. Mothership (Young) Solid (Green) Etcetera (Shorter) and probably half-a-dozen more (or more!!), if I really thought about it. I'm serious (really). And there's some that didn't see the light of day until the 90's and 00's that I feel the same way about. Boogaloo (Patton) Passing Ships (Hill) Again, several others I'm forgetting at the moment. MANY of my all-time favorite BN dates weren't released until the 70's. LOTS!!!
  4. Well, neither was Shorter's "Etcetera" -- which wasn't released until the 70's either. And we all know that "Etcetera" is THE best Shorter-lead date EVER!!!! ( ), so it's not like "wasn't released until the 70's" is proof of anything. But all half-kidding aside, "Etcetera" really is MY all-time favorite Shorter leader date, and I think arguably one of his best (maybe one of his very best) -- AND it wasn't released until the 70's. PS: And add me to the "Bluetrain" is overrated party. "Bluetrain" is good, but it sure ain't any better than "real good" in my book. IMHO, that date is WAY overrated, in terms of the credit it gets (and sales it generates). "Bluetrain" wouldn't be in my personal "top-50" favorite BN dates list, and it wouldn't even crack my "top-20 from the 50's" favorite BN list either.
  5. Cool cover (in the original post). Like the typeface/font of the title.
  6. Link in quote above is dead ( ), but I found it somewhere else!! Covering a cover??? and a different performance, same tune...
  7. Something about the color, I suspect. -_-
  8. Damn weather people here just revised their forcast. All yesterday, last night, and as recently as 20 minutes ago -- all the weather people here in KC were predicting as much as 12 to 24 inches of snow for THIS AFTERNOON and TONIGHT -- for most of the KC metro (with more snow the farther south and/or west of downtown you live). Well, they're all eating crow now, because -- hell, if I know why, something about colder, drier air than they were thinking -- now there's only gonna be 1 inch of snow for most of KC, and up to 2 inches in some parts farther south, and maybe 3 to 5 inches in the extreme southern area of the KC metro. WTF?? TO GO FROM ESTIMATES OF 1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW, TO 1 OR 2 INCHES -- IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE??? I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- weather people often don't have any clue what the hell's gonna happen. We're talkin' a snow event that was less than 12 hours in the future, before they had this huge 180-degree turnaround in their forcast. Last night, as as recently as one hour ago (8am local time), the MAJOR snow event was gonna happen over the course of time from 2pm (today!!) to about Midnight (today!!). And the funny thing is next time they predict 2-4 inches, it'll just as likely be 1-2 feet instead.
  9. On the other hand, only four or five words were changed. Heck, I make that many mistakes retyping things all the time.
  10. No central heating? Aric moved to "northern north America" a while back -- it might be even colder than 30 degrees outside. Guy Hard to shoplift heat, doncha know.
  11. I'd go in a heartbeat. I'd drive a couple hours to see that band, even if I had to get back really late, and had to get to work early the next morning.
  12. "Monster" came out on the heals of maybe their best selling and/or most popular album to date ("Automatic for the People"), and many would argue that "Automatic for the People" is R.E.M.'s best album. (The AMG review says as much ("R.E.M. have never been as emotionally direct as they are on Automatic for the People, nor have they ever created music quite as rich and timeless, and while the record is not an easy listen, it is the most rewarding record in their oeuvre.") -- though FWIW, it's probably NOT in my personal top-5.) Anyway, "Monster" was probably HUGE seller (or pretty darn big, anyway). Trouble is, Monster was nothing like anything else in the entire R.E.M. catalog up to that point. Electric, and consciously without any blues hooks or changes -- in many ways "Monster" was almost an anti-R.E.M. album. Thus, MANY people bought Monster, and probably half or more of them traded it back in. Now I really love Monster ( ) -- and it's probably one of my two or three all-time favorite R.E.M. albums. But most people aren't like me, it would seem.
  13. Actually, if we could compile a whole list of such methods of subterfuge (towards the same purpose), I'm sure more than a few board members would be quite thankful.
  14. Saw in a Ben Folds print article in the local free weekly paper several years ago, that he was bringing his "attack piano" with him on this tour, to use on certain tunes. I'm sure the phone call interview included something to the effect of "I'm bringing a 'tack' piano with me too" - which easily got turned into an "attack piano". Simple mistake, if you don't know what a "tack" piano is -- but a pretty funny one too.
  15. That airline maintenance post had me ROTFLMAO!!!
  16. Jim, have you seen the DVD yet? How's the sound quality? Picture quality "Pretty decent, all things considering" is all I'm lookin' for -- doesn't have to be any better than "pretty decent". Mono sound, I'm assuming - which is also OK by me. About to pull the trigger, but looking for some firsthand feedback about this particular DVD incarnation of the material (since there are so many DVD's of this kind of stuff). Oh, ONE MORE THING, is the DVD a DVD-R?? -- or a real, "silver" DVD??
