  1. Back in college (probably around 1989/1990, either my junior or senior year), the first Miles date I actually owned was KOB (the CD with the crappy picture from the 70's, reversed right to left if I remember right). But before that, for the first six months or so that I was getting into jazz, one of the very first things I listened to almost non-stop was a 90-minute cassette with KOB on one side, and Nefertiti on the other side (with the Nefertiti side filled out by "Prince of Darkness" from Sorcerer). THAT was my first extended exposure to Miles, and what done sealed the deal for me. (The one other jazz tape I had around the same time, which I also nearly played to death too --- had "Mode For Joe" on one side, and "Power To The People" on the other. Ain't no surprise that they're my two favorite Joe Henderson albums.)
  2. FWIW, I'm talking about UNamplified street musicians playing acoustic instruments only (or only moderately amplified -- for instruments like electric guitar, that have to have at least some amplification). I'm MUCH less likely to give anything to street musicians who really impose themselves on the space they play in. I'm no fan of that.
  3. You can pick your friends...
  4. Well, FWIW - I can tell you as a 10-year professional symphony chorus member, that I've sang Carmina Burana in about 12 or 13 different productions (going back to when I first sang it in college). I'm not always tired of singing it, but any time I have to sing it more than three times in any two-year period -- it does really start to wear on me. Went three years WITHOUT singing it once a few years back -- and then the next time I enjoyed singing it again far more than I ever expected too. Like wearing an old coat that's been hanging in the closet for years. (And the good thing about war-horses is that you don't have to rehearse them to death.)
  5. I've almost always given street musicians a dollar or two, particularly because I see them fairly rarely (more often when I'm out of town, than here in Kansas City). If I saw them all over the place - day in, day out - that might get expensive. But as it it, I'm probably only laying down $5 or maybe $10 per year. And if somebody can actually play -- I've even been known to give 'em $5 (probably done that 4 or 5 times in my life). Then there was a tenor player I saw in Glasgow on my honeymoon (back in 2001) who was clearly somebody with REAL chops (and not afraid to solo for two or three choruses - over changes he could clearly only hear in his head (though I could start to hear them too from what he was playing). That guy I think I gave a 10 pound note to (this was about 5 years ago, so would that have been about $15?? -- I forget the exchange rate).
  6. (relatively) nice cover!!
  7. Monster is my favorite REM date too!! Their worst selling album (or at least used copies can be found everywhere, for pennies on the dollar), and it only gets 2½ starts in the AMG review. But my favorite!!
  8. "Real Life Space Invaders" "Real Life Pong"
  9. Fans of the show "Hawaii-Five-O," prepare to be delighted or appalled.
  10. To the best of my knowledge, this material hasn't been collected up into a unified (single) multi-CD issue (box set) as yet -- has it?? When that happens (as it most certainly will, someday), about how many discs are we talkin'?? In other words, how much material is there (total minutes), divided by about 75 minutes per disc. Also, anything unreleased from these dates still in the can??
  11. Yet again Ornette is proven to have been way ahead of the game...
  12. Wow! I had no idea he was ever in a movie like that. COOL! Who's on drums and guitar??
  13. I haven't bought anything (yet), but I'm thinking about it... You all are gonna find this hard to believe -- but there were/are only about 5 titles that I'm really buggin' to get. Sure, I could toss another 5 or 10 more in the mix -- but nothin' I'm just dying to hear. So, which five am I'm thinking about?? Ted Curson -- (plays) Fire Down Below Teddy Edwards -- Back From Avalon Don Friedman -- Dreams and Explorations Dewey Redman -- Musics Jimmy Woods - Awakening I suppose there are a bunch of Trane and Monk sides one would argue I probably need. The Dolphy Five Spot disc too (though I'd rather wait and see if they come out with a unified "complete" Dolphy Five Spot set). Spent the better part of 90+ minutes last night going through the sale list A to Z, listening to on-line samples of probably 25 or 30 discs, and looking up a ton of All Music reviews. Call me fickle -- but I'm just not dying to buy a bunch of discs cuz they're cheap, if they're titles I know I'm not gonna spin all that often.
  14. It couldn't have been Prestige, since he made several records for them. Could it have been Blue Note? Naw... Ornette recorded some cuts during the Blue Note heyday--and he was/is pretty clean, right? I doubt cats like Sam Rivers would still be appreciative of their BN legacies if the label were up to such unsavory dealings. I assumed that he was talking about Blue Note, since he'd mentioned Lee and Hank previously. I could be wrong in my assumption. So if it wasn't Blue Note, then who could it be?? Or, was it Blue Note??
  15. I've seen Osby at least once -- and maybe twice with Matt (both times here in Kansas City). This was back when Jason Moran was still in the band -- so judging from the discography, that would have been back in '03.
  16. I see Sangry has made some changes to the Patton article. Anybody else care to take a crack at it?? I know there are some real Patton experts around here (alas, I'm not one of them). Thanks!!
  17. I can get into the Forum OK, but I'm seeing the X too.
  18. There was a story on NPR this morning (Monday, LINK) about a band from Atlanta (the CodeTalkers), and their guitar player plays through a leslie (should "leslie" be capitalized?), and they were talking about it and demoing it during the story. My wife thought that meant playing a guitar through an organ. I tried to explain how that was sorta kinda half-way true, but not quite -- and I was wishing I had some footage of a leslie in action, to show her. Anybody know of any?? Thanks!!! Also, anybody played anything else (or heard of anybody playing anything else) through a leslie?? I know Miles hooked up a wah-wah to his trumpet -- but can you (could you?) play a trumpet through leslie?? -- for instance. Or anything else through a leslie?? -- for that mater.
  19. Very fast.
  20. Wow, that's fast
  21. Yep. Details?? What's the line-up?? Ever been on CD??
  22. Done. Took less than a minute, even with my triple-checking the change before I hit the save button. It's just that easy, and literally ANYBODY can do it (including anybody here). Get to it!!
