  1. We do NOT!!!
  2. Guess what I just read!!! Miho Hatori is the supposedly the illegitimate daughter of Sun Ra(!). (Source) She was also born on Venus (or so she claims, same source as above). Another pic of Miho:
  3. PS: I've got an extra (duplicate) Empty Foxhole conn, if anybody's hurtin' for one. And just cuz this is his thread, Jazz Kat's got the right of first refusal.
  4. I've only heard Empty Foxhole (which I've had since the first batch of Conns over 10 years ago), and I've always wondered about the other recording(s?) with young Denardo (say anything under the age of 17). The only other one I'm aware of is ORNETTE AT 12, when Denardo was 12. Are there any others I'm forgetting?? Thanks!! (Afraid I'm not very up on what relatively little Ornette that hasn't been released on CD.) Edit: Hey, did Denardo have to join the musicians union in order to make those recordings?? (Could you even join if you were that young??) What were the musician union regulations about such things back then??
  5. I've bought a couple OJC's from casacaiman on half.com before, and never had any problems (at least not yet). Items came sealed as promised. But I too have wondered if they really had everything they supposedly had listed. If so, their inventory must be HUGE, and their prices are always about what I would expect for wholesale.
  6. I've just ordered this set on cd. I'm sure you'll love it. I know one of your nits about Mosaic is that they don't present stuff in LP order, but I think they do on this set. Plus, none of the albums/sessions are split across multiple discs(!!!). 10 LP's on 5 discs, 2-LP's-per-disc in every case. Suspect you'll probably like the "pop" material too.
  7. What the moose said...
  8. No idea about a new cover for the Fresh Sounds material. I just copped the image from Dusty Groove. My cover looks different, probably the same one you have (the old one, presumably). So I guess then this is the new cover. No idea if they fixed the tune titles. Anybody own this with the new cover?? What are the tunes???
  9. NOT the same set. Two completely differnent things we're talkin' about here... The one on the left is gray-market material, by Fresh Sound (and probably not recorded at The Lighthouse, but from the same time period). The Fresh Sound hastwo discs total. The one on the right is the official Blue Note release. The Blue Note has three discs total (at least the U.S. domestic issue). Well, where might be a two-disc TOCJ, maybe (that mirrors the original 2-LP set), but the 3-CD expanded edition is by far the most common one. In the case of the wrong disc with Fresh Sound, I'd definitely take it back to the retailer you got it from, and just return it (and get another one somewhere else). Getting a replacement disc via Fresh Sound directly would probably be a major pain in the ass (if it's even possible at all). In the case of the wrong disc with Blue Note, you could try either route, and I would guess with an equal chance for success.
  10. The pop/rock covers make up but one out of a total of 10 LP's worth of material. Yeah, they're a little corny, but they've grown on me a bit as well. Fully 80% of the Gerald Wilson set is absolutely top-drawer ( !!!!!), with 10% that's maybe a little less than top-drawer (but still very good), and then that last 10% made up the "pop/rock covers" material. I love the set, and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
  11. Another reason to have Contrasts released as a Conn. Love the cover!! One of the better late-60's covers, bridging both the early and later cover-styles on BN. (CLICKY for larger image.)
  12. Has this ever seen the light of day on CD??? Not that I'm aware of, but I thought I'd ask. Always been interested, especially cuz Woody's on it.
  13. Up for old times sake, and new . Enjoy!!!!
  14. So THAT'S why the Water BN's look so damn good -- like the real thing. Hell, the Eddie Gales are maybe even a bit BETTER than the real thing (in terms of the quality of the packaging, liner-notes, and etc...). Way to go Patrick!!! Love many of his "pseudo-BN" covers too. A few are even damn near as good as the original style.
  15. Not here in the U.S., where it's not played all that often, least not that I've noticed. Actually, I'm kinda of ashamed to admit this, but I've never seen the movie either. I have seen probably three full-length dance numbers, on those PBS "movie musical" specials that they show at least once a year during fund-drives. But I've never seen the whole movie. Thing is, I don't watch movies on television all that often. But if it was ever playing in the old-movie threater here in town, I'd sure go (as I've done for lots of old movies, over the years). Maybe it's played here, and I just missed it. Probably the case.
  16. Actually, there's a NEW new "Yo Miles!" release. So there's a total of three so far... Yo, Miles! (Aug., 1998) Sky Garden/Yo Miles (May, 2004) Upriver: Yo Miles (Jan., 2005) Gosh, has it really been going on 7 years since the first one??? Time sure flies!!!
  17. Oh crap, I hadn't even thought about that. Cripes, what if it is "J-Mo"??
  18. So how do we start lobbying to get Water to license and reissue the two Kenny Cox BN's???
  19. No. But she does if she wants to get played on the CBC.
  20. I've traded some e-mails with Jason too, and you know, come to think of it --- he does usually sign them "JAMO". Edit: Now the real question... Is it pronounced "GhahMO" or "GHAHmo"??? Who's got the balls here to e-mail him and find out??? My money's on "GHAHmo".
  21. I would argue that there's something to be said for Life Experiences informing classical music interpretations and performances too. I'm no expert (not by a long shot), but I've heard enough performances of instrumental chamber music, and solo concerti -- where the magic just wasn't happenin' -- that I think I can say that I'm pretty sure that what the performers bring to the table isn't just technical. Case in point... There's a young (college age) classical pianist who is currently the music director at our church (we don't have an organ, but a 10-foot grand piano in our church auditorium/sanctuary). She's a really hot-shit player, studying to compete in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in about two years. And from all accounts, she's expected to do well too. But my ears can tell you this person has not had enough Life Experience under her belt -- or at least not of the right kind as to inform her music, emotionally speaking. Technically, she is quite good. Maybe even closer to "exceptionally good". But what she can't do is make the music "sing". Whether it's music close to her area of expertise (she programs a lot of Chopin and Tchaikovsky into our services), or even just simple hymn accompaniments, and playing charts with the choir... she approaches everything she plays in terms of primarily what's on the page. It's often to the point where the congregation has a tough time singing the hymns, because she doesn't let the music settle after the last cadence of each verse, and doesn't let the music "breath" at those places where it really needs to (i.e. when there's a triplet in the melody line, or simple syncopation). I'm a semi-professional classical vocalist (I've sung in a professional symphony chorus for 10 years), and I've been very hesitant to sing any solo-work in our church since we hired this gal about two years ago. She's young -- college age -- and really needs some seasoning. And I would argue that she needs to get some more "life" under her belt. She has it all in the technical areas, but I don't think she's lived enough to really make the music "sing". Will having more "life experience" alone fix this?? Probably not. But more technical study, absent "life experiences", can only fix things up to a certain point. I think classical players need both. (Just like jazz players) PS: I'd be curious to hear Free For All's perspective on this, since he's a professional jazz musician, married to a professional classical musician. Edit: She can sure play the shit out of Mozart though. Warning, Bias alert, bias alert!!! --> I think most "Classical"-era classical music (or at least the fast, showy stuff), needs way more "technical" bravado, and not as much "emotional/life"-stuff --- to come off well.
  22. First thing I thought of was this: How many young people will see this ad, and not even get that there's anything weird about it. Some guy throwin' down his moves in the rain, what's the big deal?? I mean, I'm 35 -- born 17 years after "Singin' in the Rain" was first released. But I'm betting less than 5% of people my age and younger, have ever seen "Singin' in the Rain". (Maybe closer to 2%?? ) But definitely it's a very cool ad. B-)
  23. Don't ask me. I usually tape the Super Bowl every year, so I can go back and watch most of the comercials. Many years I don't even know who's playing until I play back the tape.
  24. JAMO's been Jason's nickname for several years now at least. Heck, it probably dates back to his high-school days (just my own guess). Jason's own website makes reference to "JAMO" quite a number of times. Just scroll down the page... http://www.jasonmoran.com/home.html I even think I heard Greg Osby holler to Jason between sets at one of Osby's gigs here in KC, saying: "Hey, Ghahmo...".
  25. That's what my concern is about this release (at least from the two tunes I've heard). When the guitar is soloing, it just sounds pretty whack to me. (I guess whether that's a "good" sort of whack, or a "bad" sort of whack, or maybe a baaaad sort of whack -- remains to be seen) Spontoonious was over here last week, and we both gave a listen -- and I think his reaction was similar. Wish the tone of his guitar wasn't so biting -- so damn electric. A more laid-back tone might have worked better for me. The "busy"-ness wasn't what bothered me, so much as the tone.
