I'll be curious to hear what people think of this one too. I'm sure I'll get it, one of these days, since I have all Moran's leader dates, and probably 90+% of his sideman work as well. (And some private recordings too.) But having listened to the on-line samples (two full-length tunes are on the BN website, plus 60-second samples of all the other tunes on Amazon), I'm not entirely sure about this one yet. I should reserve judgement until I hear the entire thing, but I'm a little on the fence based on what I've heard so far. And I say that speaking as someone who ranks Moran as one of their very favorite pianists on the scene today.

And that said, then maybe there is some real chance that NATURAL ESSENCE will actually be a Conn someday (if not next October, then certainly within the next three years I'd think). And the only way that sucker is gonna sell even as much (or rather as "little") as it's gonna sell, is if they include some of The Trainwreck™ session as bonus cuts. After all, quite a few of us already have the TOCJ -- so without bonus cuts, there'd be no motivation to buy the Conn.

Is it just me, or are we actually getting close to the light at the end of the tunnel?? Certainly "yes" in terms of previously unreleased material (there's really not all that much left in the vaults -- probably a dozen sessions at most, no?? -- and much as we'd like to think otherwise, some number of them are probably legitimately "rejected" on artistic grounds). But also in terms of obvious ("real") choices for Conns, in terms of titles that have never been released on CD before in the U.S. (except as part of a Mosaic). Sure, there are still a number of things left to go that are much closer to "Rare Groove"-type material, which we may yet see through Water (if the "Rare Groove" series really is dead). But in terms of "Conn" material, there really aren't lots and lots of obvious choices left for this series (other than titles we've already seen as parts of Mosaics, of course). Anybody think otherwise?? What titles and/or sessions am I overlooking??

I wonder if the RVG will make that beer bottle falling over louder or softer on his remater of this date. Wha???

Was just searching for something else unrelated, and got a match on this thread. I still love most of the Japanese-only LP covers, and thought I'd pop this thread up for some more , who might not have seen them the first time around. Enjoy!!!

underrated trumpet players from the 60's, 70's...

Wow, that's one I'd never heard of. Looks great on paper. Damn, it's never been on CD. Can anybody hook me up with a burn??? (Or maybe my local buddy, Spontoonious, has one he can burn me.) -
Probably the "free shipping" offer that applies to any order over $29. But I almost always get my Mosaics straight from the source (unless they're OOP), even if they cost a couple bucks more to do so. (The only exception I can think of is my trading some CD's I had, to get a used Select from someone here on this board.) Of all the companies that deserve compensation for their efforts, Mosaic ranks as high as any in my book.

Has anyone compared the JRVG to the Mosaic mastering? I had the TOCJ and ditched it after I compared it to the Mosaic, but might be willing to purchase this fine session again if the mastering is that great. I'll probably buy the new one, and pass my old Judgement conn on to a friend. I don't re-purchase discs very often, but there's always room for an exception when it comes to certain titles that are close to my heart. Might repurchase Oblique too, just cuz it's my favorite Hutch-lead session. EDIT: By the way, I want to give a hearty thumbs up ( ) for Grant Green's Sunday Morning ( ). I only recently heard this date for the very first time, probably only about a year or maybe two ago. The conn was nowhere on my radar when it first came out, and since hearing it, it's become one of my all-time favorite Grant Green sessions.

Rather enjoying the trumpeter Danny Coleman on Rene McLean's "Watch Out" from 1975 -- which I'm only just hearing for the first time (on loan from Spontoonious). Don't think I've ever heard anything else by or with Coleman before. Anything I should be on the lookout for?? The AMG doesn't list him as having played on much else --> one date by Gary Bartz in 1980, and another by Mtume also from 1980. Surely there's more he's on, I'm guessing. Anybody??? -
Everybody, please e-mail Michael at the Mosaic address, and let's all tell him how much we want to hear The Trainwreck session. Can't tell you how much I'd love to hear this material -- if it turns out to be of value and merits release. FYI, here's the most info we've ever been able to get about it, a "review" of sorts. This quote (below) comes from this thread on AAJ...

Nice list!! I've already got most of them on disc, in one form or another -- but I'm glad to see a few titles in there, in particular. Oblique, especially. Judgement too. Kinda wish they had RVG'ed Complete Communion before Symphony For Improvisers, but my memory is that Symphony's been OOP longer. Like I said, nice list!!

We all want to hear it too!!!!

I came across two private recordings someone gave me a copy of. I'm trying to figure out the sidemen and a couple of the tunes. The dates are 11/27/86 at Bradley's in NYC and 7/23/93 at San Remo, Italy. I have the musicians figured out but not the set list.h I think Spontoonious has this disc (the '86 live recording), which I think is legit (or at least semi-legit??). Henderson, Joe; 11/27/86; Bradley’s, San Francisco, CA; 42 min; "A-" sound-quality; audience recording; Joe Henderson (ts), Renee Rosnes (p), Marlene Rosenberg (b), Sylvia Cuenca (d). Issued on Arco CD: 104 – Punjab. (Joe's semi-famous, but little recorded "all girl band" -- no slight intended.) Also, FWIW, I tried to find the other date (7/23/93, Italy), to help ID the sidemen. But it didn't appear in the various trade-lists I've seen from people over the years, or at least not that I can find.

Looks like I only got bumped to #24. Could somebody bump me down one more notch to #25?? (Gettin' my shit together this week and next, but I don't think I'll have it all done in time to be #24.) Thanks!!! -- Rooster T.

Wow!! No specific question from me. Just a burning desire to see the thing. Any plans to "publish" it via your website?? And any estimate as to when that might be?? Thanks a bunch!!!
-
Sound-quality is a couple notches above "it sucks", but the music is truely wonderful. VERY modal, and very hard-driving. Two long cuts, about 20-minutes each. Don't pay a mint for it, but I think it's well worth standard "new CD" prices. Again, warning, the sound-quality is not very good. But the music definitely rises above it -- or at least it did for me. Woody's on fire!!!!!

Congrats!!!!!

Would have loved to have heard this version of the band... April? 1969... Blakey (of course); Woody Shaw-tpt; Tyrone Washington-tsx; George Cables-p; Scotty Holt-b

And probably better than the real movie will be too. -
I sure wish Henderson would re-record some of that 70's material again, or new tunes in that style. His first two leader albums circa 1974 are top drawer.
