  1. Wish I could go. I saw Holland's quintet in 2001 and again in 2002. Two of the best concerts I've ever been to.
  2. It's "bringing up old threads" day for the Rooster. Hopefully I'll think of something useful to contribute to this one any minute now. Until then, BUMP!!!
  3. Great thread. More please!!
  4. Don't know about Wynton doing it (but it wouldn't suprise me if he did either), but the first time I ever heard about this kinda thing - was a report by that Kansas City Star jazz guy, who said he heard KC's own Roger Wilder do it on a gig at the Blue Room. So, chalk it up to you wanting to emulate Roger -- who we both know is way cooler than Wynton. B) (...so is that guy at The Star too. )
  5. Just a long-shot, but you might pitch your idea to Ben Azzara. He did the original development work for a TON of jazz sites (for specific artists), and he's a big fan of the music too (and a musician too, if I remember right). Great guy too, it would seen - I traded some discs with him about 3 years back. (Seemed very much like the kinda guy we all like to have around these parts (in Organissimo-land), come to think of it.) His list of jazz artists, for whom he's done their official "personal" sites, includes... Andrew Hill Chris Dingman Edward Simon Greg Osby Helen Sung Imani Records — Orrin Evans Jason Moran Jeremy Pelt Jimmy Greene John Sullivan Kenny Davis Lonnie Plaxico Marcus Strickland Mike Moreno Rick Germanson Steve Lehman CLICK HERE for links to all of the sites he's developed, and for more info on Ben (including his contact info). And be sure let me/us know if he turns out to be interested, by any chance. Good luck!!! (He's done a bunch of other sites too, and the complete list is at the link above.)
  6. Wish I had the web-skills --- I'd take you up on your offer in a heartbeat.
  7. If I had a cell phone that I could change the ringer on (and I don't - I've got a much older one - with no plans to upgrade), I'd try to find some way to program it to do Zappa's "The Black Page". Though I suppose it'd be a bitch to get it to do N-tuplets --- like 5-tuplets, and 7-tuplets --- let alone a triplet where each 1/3 of the subdivision is further subdivided into 5, 7, and 9 tuplets (respectively). Either that, or some Ornette tune -- they do have microtonal settings (notes), right????
  8. I'm certainly not sure that it plays any role, but indirectly, consistant high auction prices may indicate some real interest in the date -- enough that perhaps a number of people have contacted Michael about it, or Blue Note (who presumably passes along those kinds of things to Michael). Or high prices on eBay may not mean a damn thing either. Depends on the title really, and the specific artist in question.
  9. Hey, that's a GREAT idea for what is really Connie's thread, Rooster!!! I have a funny hunch that Jack Wilson's "Easterly Winds" will be in the next round of Conns. It seems to always fetch a good (sometimes even CRAZY) price on eBay, when I see it come up as a TOCJ.
  10. I heard directly from Michael back in January (or maybe late December) that the Booker Ervin / Woody Shaw date from '68 (or was it '67?) would probably be a Conn, in the next batch (no discussion of when that might be). I'm talking about half of the Ervin two-LP release "Back from the Gig" (the half that wasn't actually lead by Horace Parlan). Anyone care to make any predictions about what might be in the next batch of Conns??? NOT what you want to be in the next batch... ...but what you THINK will be in the next batch??? What do we (collectively) think Michael is thinking???
  11. That's maybe the most Smilies Chuck's ever used in a single post, ever!! Chuck, I remember you saying back on the old BNBB about how you about never used Smileys (which got you in trouble for never using the 'winky' one - ). Two clicks later, and I was looking at page after page of your posts - and you were right, I could only find maybe one or two with any Smilies at all. You tryin' to make up for lost time, or somethin'??
  12. Same for me. They were static when I first brought up this thread, but I did a simple refresh of the page - and now they be rollin'.
  13. I'm about 99% sure that "Contours" has never been released on CD all by itself. The only time it's ever been on CD has been as part of the Mosaic. GREAT date too. Really wish this would come out as a Conn some time.
  14. Never did decide what I thought about it, and then found it was just simpler not to think anything about it.
  15. I finally gave up trying to fix things manually, and went with using the Win-ME "System Restore" function. This appears to have fixed things!! At least my screen resultion is back to 1152x864, and the colors are back to "High Color (16 bit)". So, all is well, it would seem. Appreciate everyone's advice and help. Thanks!!!!! Gosh I hate these evil machines sometimes.
  16. I tried changing the screen resolution to a higher (more dense) mode (meaning something higher than 640x400), but 640x400 is the only screen resolution that was available from among the choices. (Normally there are many more choices than that.) Also, 16 colors was the only choice available, where there usually is alot more choices, like 256, and probably much higher numbers than that. I will try resetting the monitor and/or video-drivers again now, best I can. I think it's coming up in 640x400 (and 16 colors), because it is defaulting to a more primitive set of "monitor/video-driver" settings, as if the computer lost it's video-driver, AND/OR if the monitor settings were "changed/deleted/what-ever" too/instead.
  17. Everything seems to be OK now, after running the Win-ME "System Restore" function. See below... =========== I was surfing links on fark.com, and clicked on a link buried in a thread. My virus-checker started going off and detecting what it thought were viruses in files at the site the link went too. Well, no big deal, I thought -- I get virus alerts when I surf, probably two or three times a month. I just have Norton try to delete the file, or quarentine it off, or whatever it recomends. Well, this time, after about another minute after my virus-checker went off -- my screen suddenly went to 640-400, and to 16 colors only display mode. And, for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I've got a Dell monitor, P991 -- though I've only been able to find the Dell P990 in the list of all the available monitors that I can try to re-install. (So I picked that one). I also strongly suspect that my video-card is no longer installed correctly (software-wise), because when I boot up - it says something about an incompatibility between the display device, and the hardware that runs it (can't remember the exact message -- I'll write it down next time I reboot, and repost it (exactly) here). What a mess. I started running the virus checker, but it's so darn late (after 2am where I am), that I gave up on the virus checker running after about 10 minutes. Well, I guess maybe running the virus checker might be a good idea, so I'm going to start it now, and go to bed -- and check in the morning to see if it's found anything. Thought I'd go ahead and start a thread about this, since I'm sure this will be my #1 priority tomorrow -- since we're supposed to be finishing our taxes with TurboTax, hopefully this weekend!!! Any advice would be much appreciated. For what it's worth, I'm running Win-ME. Thanks again!!!!!! =========== Everything seems to be OK now, after running the Win-ME "System Restore" function. 18. box set, box set, box set. The Mosaic is amazing. Well, 90% of it is amazing. 10 albums on 5 CD's, and only 1/2 of one CD is anything less than 4 or 5 stars. Probably my favorite non-BN Mosaic, hands down.
  19. I've heard the same thing (or nearly the same thing) said about Greg Osby's more recent output (since about 1998 at least). The way you get to my heart is through my head, but that's not the case for everyone. (And there's no right or wrong answer.) But oddly enough, I do think there's something similar about Osby of late, and Stanko - at least in the style of their playing and soloing. (Maybe "style" isn't the right word: in the "effect" of their playing and soloing?? Is that any better??)
  20. Downbeat is what it is. It's not the worst thing ever, and it's a little better now, than I remember it being at various times in the last 20 years or so. I don't subscribe, and I only buy about two issues per year -- but I do pick the thing up at the newsstand most months, and spend a good 3-5 minutes with it. I usually buy the "critics poll" issue every year, and one other issue - based on the cover story (which always turns out to be less depth than I was looking for). I've thought about subscribing for years, but I never have. It's worth about $1 per issue to me, sometimes $2, or occasionally even $3 -- and their subscription rates are never close enough to that to make be pull the trigger. It's a mainstream jazz mag, and it doesn't pretend to be anything otherwise. I'm sure if they went in the directions I'd like to see them go, their readership would take a serious nosedive. Overall, I'd give them a letter grade of "B-". Occasionally they put out what I consider to be a "B+" issue. Several "C" or "C+" issues per year as well. Was a time several years ago when they were lucky to put out a "C-" issue, IMHO.
  21. Yup, heard that on NPR the other day. She's 25 now!!
  22. Monk's "Ask Me Now" -- as performed by Joe Henderson I have at least three, maybe four different versions that Joe plays on.
  23. Which organ you talkin' 'bout???
