AOTW: Ideas for logistically difficult ones...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
How about both of Kenny Cox's obscure Blue Note albums, from 1968 and 1969 - Introducing Kenny Cox and Multidirection. (If you only clicked on the first one, there's an actual full AMG review for "Multidirection".) Both would fit on one CD (perhaps with at most 30 seconds of music trimmed off). Both feature Leon Henderson on tenor, who is Joe Henderson's brother. Both albums are direct decedents of the Miles Davis "Sorcerer"/"Neffertiti" style of jazz. In fact, if you aurally 'squint' real hard, you might even think it was the group from Miles 2nd classic quintet, maybe on a bad day. (I don't mean that as a slam, but rather that they really are trying to fit into the "Miles in 1967" mode, and they do it reasonably darn well, IMHO.) PS: Neither one of the Kenny Cox LP's have ever been released on CD, and I'm guessing they probably won't ever be either, sadly... -
Several album covers I hadn't seen before

Hi all, I'm going to be in Seattle, WA and Portland, OR for a couple weeks in June (7th-24th). Any suggestions of stuff to see, places to go, things to do?? My wife and I are big on museums, historic architecture (late 1800's through the early and mid 20th Century, or (maybe) even more modern stuff than that!!), ethnic restaurants (Thai, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean), and funky/eclectic neighborhoods. Jazz-related suggestions are welcome, of course, but we're mostly going to visit some relatives of mine, and see stuff. My wife's not into jazz too much, unless it's just a piano trio. (We are both, however, into classical music, orchestral or chamber.) Thanks!!!

I think I like that cover for "Sonic Boom" just as much as the one that came out on the Japanese CD. Here it is, if anyone need reminding... -
Post your ideas here, in this thread. Since I'm the poll-meister, in a week or three, I'll take the top 10 ideas we come up with, create a poll, and we can vote on which one we want to do first. This will require some sort of CDR-tree, or at the very least a tape-tree. Could be a ton of fun!!! ( I've got some ideas myself, but wanted to get this thread started first, and not color the discussion by putting my ideas up front. ) PS: By "gray-market", I mean bootleg material (usually recorded live), and otherwise not available comercially - except maybe in Italy back in the early 90's.

RT, The cover you posted is from the (Japanese) CD-edition -- TOCJ-1620. The cover shown in the cover art book (GXF-3066) is from the vinyl version (Japanese King issue). Peter Thanks!!! Bet there are some others like that too. I rather like most of the vinyl "King" covers of what were (at the time) previously unreleased sessions. Can't help but wonder if a Japanese cover was ever produced for Andrew Hill's 1968 trio album "Chain", that went so far as to be assigned a King "GFX" catalog number and everything. If so, I have some silly hope that it could be used for when (if?) this session is ever released. For those who might not know, this session is still unreleased to this day. Kevin (if you happen to see this), if you ever talk to Michael about unreleased sessions, I'd really be curious to know if he thinks this one will ever come out?? -

Best news story I've read in a week. Thanks!!!

I say leave it.

OMG!!! I would have bet $100 that Woods was no longer playing, or possibly not even with us any longer. Wonder why he didn't record more?? Woods' complete discography (including sideman dates) isn't any bigger than Tyrone Washington's, far as I can tell.

"Alternate takes" that matter the most...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Damn, how could I forget to mention the completely alternate version of "Miles Ahead" from the Miles & Gil box. That's worth the price of admission all by itself!!!! (Or at least it is to me!!) -
As I'm typing this, I'm listening to Herbie's album "Speak Like A Child" from the complete BN box, and the alternates are really giving me a wonderful different perspective on some of these tunes (there are 2 alternates for "Riot", and 1 for "Goodbye To Childhood", but the "Goodbye..." alternate has an incredible solo-piano section that is breathtaking!!!). The alternates from Miles Davis "Sorcerer" and "Neffertiti" sessions were pretty wonderful to hear, finally!! What are your favorite albums that have since been released with several great alternate takes??? - either as single CD issues, or as part of some big box set. ========== Maybe I should also clarify, to say that I'm talking primarily about actual alternate verisons of tunes that were released 'back in the day'. Not just unreleased tunes recorded at the same sessions, and included later as bonus tracks.

great deals seen at Graveyard Mall dot com
Rooster_Ties replied to John B's topic in Offering and Looking For...
http://store.yahoo.com/graveyard/newage.html Don't ask me why the jazz section is on a link with "newage" in the name, but it is. Some of these titles are OOP now. Not incredible prices, but not so bad either. -
Album of the Week - what do people already have???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Thanks, Soul Stream. It was a fun process - I hope others do the same, if they like. People are still voting!! "Grass Roots" pulled neck'n'neck with "Jacknife", but now "Jacknife" is back out in front!! -
Another reason to delay in doing "Conflict" as an Album of the Week. Let's see if it doesn't come out in Europe sometime soon (knock on wood), hopefully by June or July.
-
Sorry, I meant to say Charles Davis...
-
Well, hard to believe as it is, I don't have (nor have I ever heard) the Dolphy/Booker-Little dates. And actually, I'm not sure I've ever heard any Booker Little, or at least not that I can think of...
-
That sucks... Wonder why??
-
Oh, come on people. It's not that big a deal whether it's labeled "for sale" or "for auction". So, you looked at a thread you might otherwise have not looked at. Get over it.
-
OK, for reasons I can't possibly defend, I don't happen to have very much Eric Dolphy. What are your favorites, and why?? (And don't just say "get the whole Prestige box set!!", cuz I'm not sure I'm ready to take that leap yet, especially with $$$ tight at the moment.) I think my entire Dolphy collection (thus far) consists of the following, which I have ranked in terms of how much I like them... 1. Iron Man (mine is on Celluloid CD circa early 1990's, but what is the best/most-complete version of this material?) 2. The Illinois Concert (BN) / Out to Lunch (BN) / Other Aspects (BN) 3. Outward Bound (OJC) 4. Last Date (can't remember if I still have this, but I know I had it at one time, maybe still do?) Getting back to "Iron Man" - is there a complete "Iron Man" sessions release anywhere?? I know that there are at least a couple more tracks from this session (these sessions?) beyond what's on my CD, which I think only has 5 tracks. Is there any single CD that collects all the "Iron Man"-related tracks that have Woody Shaw on them?? Also, my "Iron Man" CD is somewhat lacking in the sonics department - is it just the material, or the crappy early 90's issue I have??

What albums *really* exceeded your expectations???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Soul Stream already mentioned this one, but let me also say... Dizzy Reece's "Soundin' Off" far exceeded my expectations. Also, this one that hasn't been mentioned yet... Horace Parlan's "Happy Frame of Mind" really was a big standout for me when I got the Parlan Mosaic. -
Candy Dulfer

What did you first get in the past few years (or even years ago), that was really "kick-ass"?? - even if you only picked it us cuz it looked "interesting" on paper, or you heard it was good - but had your doubts going into it (or heard it 'hyped' a lot, before you heard it). Or, maybe another similar question: What reissues/new-releases actually lived up to your (probably unrealistically high) expectations, going into it?? Or, how about this: what unexpectedly couldn't you get out of your CD player (or off your turntable) for like a whole month after you got it?? ========== For me, two recent jazz titles that come to mind as totally smacking me up-side the head - to the point that I listened to them 10 or even 15 times the first week I got 'em, and another 3-5 times per week for a couple more weeks after that, were... Jimmy Woods - "Conflict" ( - just came out this week in the U.S. ) Chick Corea - "The Complete 'IS' Sessions" (2002 Conn) FYI: Disc #1 specifically, I could do w/out Disc #2. Both of these (the Woods and Corea) were discs I thought might be good, but I had no idea how totally amazing I would find them to be, even the first time I heard them (not even all-the-way-though all the tracks, or even not all-the-way-through the first track). I mean, I was hooked 1 or 2 minutes into the first track, and it only got better (or baddder!!!!) the more I heard!!! A new jazz title that did this for me also was... Dave Douglas - "The Infinite" (2002) and a new non-jazz release, that I probably listened to 3-5 times a week for the first month I had it - the band called... Interpol - "Turn on the Bright Lights" (2002) And as I think of others, I'll add them to this thread.... How about you?????

Album of the Week - what do people already have???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
OK, I've decided. No, not which album I'm going to pick. I've decided that AfricaBrass gets to pick the next "Album of the Week", meaning right after me. He came up with this idea in the first place, and he was the one who graciously didn't make himself the first person to pick an album, and he's never picked one yet (at least not that I can tell). Put your thinking cap on A.B. - and do us proud!!!!! -
Yeah.... on the whole, not too bad.
