  1. A 4 CD set with Gerry Hemingway is being released this month on Mode Records. http://www.gerryhemingway.com/news.html Also, three more have just come out on Leo Records: another four disc set from the Standards Quartet, a duo with Ann Rhodes called GTM (Syntax) 2003 and a duo with Chris Jonas and trio with Jonas and Molly Sturges called GTM (Outpost) 2003.
  2. Haven't read it in years, but really enjoyed it when I first read it.
  3. More good news. I've been lusting after the Konitz title since I ran across it. The Sun Ra title is one of my favorites by him. Does anyone know if the new edition will include the LP tracks that were left off the previous CD release? No, unfortunately the missing LP tracks aren't on the new edition.
  4. Nice cover version of Harold Mabern's "The Beehive" on it.
  5. "Soul Mate," Andrew Hill, from the Mosaic Select (Blue Note version).
  6. I love From No Time to Rag Time on hat art, which covers Rudd, Braxton, Mingus, Ornette and more. Lauren Newton's singing is amazing.
  7. He's just a kid. It's better than uploading videos of tired power chords to youtube.
  8. . Michael Fitzgerald's chronology of Blakey's Jazz Messengers indicates Woody Shaw, Carlos Garnett, George Cables and Jan Arnet. Gene Santoro's book on Mingus 'Myself when I am real' says he played in June 1969 at the Village Vanguard with Bill Hardman, Charles McPherson, Billy Robinson on tenor and Dannie Richmond and had the same group at Cliff Walk Manor. Santoro isn't always a good source for this sort of information (read the section on Mingus at Monterey), but Brian Priestley lists the same personnel in his book.

I've seen her perform with Braxton's 12+1tet. She definitely deserves wider recognition.
  10. I'm a big Dunlop fan too. My favourite of Monk's drummers.
  11. I'm interested in the Bitches Brew reissues. The first CD release sounded horrible. The second came with Disc 1 covered in glue. Never thought the CD issues came close to the original vinyl, which is the best place to appreciate Harvey Brooks' bass. Wonder what the extras will be? I'd be interested in hearing outtakes from the session rather than the later stuff that was placed on the Bitches Brew coattails for the box set.
  12. I don't really get Andrew Hill, but I love trying to figure him out. I love all the Blue Notes (from the first time around). I have them all. Judgment, Compulsion, Grass Roots and the Mosaic box get the most spins.
  13. RIP. I`ll have to spin his Weill record he did with John Lewis, but I remember him more for his great jazz writing.
  14. Yes. They've been carrying the Braxton House CDs again for a couple of years now.
  15. I've heard Volume 2, but I don't like the horn section that Alan Douglas overdubbed later.
  16. RIP. He had a good long life. I really enjoy the disc he did with Jimmy Giuffre.
  17. Time to call the MacArthur Foundation.
  18. This is good news. I have a couple of titles on Braxton House, but missed a bunch of them when they first came out. Maybe he'll consider reprinting the back catalog as there is a lot of great music there. All 8 CDs are still in stock at Downtown Music Gallery.
  19. Too bad they didn't restore the original concert order for 1943. "Koko," "Dirge," "Stomp" and "Are You Stickin'" were played after Black, Brown and Beige. Moving them made sense on LP, but easily fixed on CD. Another sign that JETman's suspicions about no new remastering may well be correct.
  20. He's also on the Lenox School of Music concert bootleg.
  21. It was White's second record date, after the sessions for Andrew Hill's Passing Ships Other way around. Bitches Brew was August; Passing Ships was November 1969.
  22. Taiga puts out great-sounding records--one of the better vinyl labels out there. I got the multicoloured version of the MAP--it sounds superb, as is the music.
  23. Great concert last night. They played for 90 minutes before a packed house launching off from Comp. 355. Will try and post more details at some point. The Sonic Genome project is tomorrow.
