Played the two Haydn discs from the Staier Edition for the first time in the past days and found them surprisingly good (surprisingly, since I, too, am not that convinced by the fortepiano so far).

Remember there are two Monterey sets in the box. Totally agree with you about the 1964 Monterey performance, the "Meditations on Integration" from that is epic. OTOH, the 1965 Monterey performance is a mess, and Mingus himself seems to have known that, cutting it off short. Oh, I indeed forgot about that! All I heard of that 1965 Monterey set is the track on that Malpaso 3CD-set (which actually I got for that one track).

Well, that's not HOW IT IS but HOW (I think) IT SHOULD BE. So no wonder you're not seeing it :-) Would still be useful though, I think! And it's in work on other forums.

Shouldn't everyone be able to add tags later on? I already wondered where they were ... they make sense if people keep adding relevant ones (and they're useless good fun when people add fun ones) whilst a thread derails ...

I'm somewhat amazed about the bashing of "Mingus at Monterey". To me, the long piece with the expanded band is prime Mingus and good enough to make me held the whole album in high esteem!

Will spend next week and the last week of November in Luxembourg and wonder if anyone knows of any cool places to hang, listen to some music, have drinks, whatever ... and also if anyone knows of any rekkid stores with dusty old vinyl to flip through or some of those crappy silvery thingies, new or used ... finally, is anyone actually based there and would care for an afterwork drink? (Claude, are you still around? Still based in Luxembourg? Is it true that all shops close at 6:30 p.m.?) Will be there from late on Sunday until Friday afternoon ... only planned/booked activity so far is Grigory Sokolov at the Luxembourg Philharmonic on Monday, November 26.
