  1. Gee, almost sounds as if you are stating cops by and large make a mess of their jobs....
  2. Heh, just a little late...Hope it was a good one!
  3. So, the side effects of the new medicine aren't too bad then, eh Allen?
  4. Ah, thanks! Nice Lionel Hampton site.
  5. I recognize Dorsey, Basie(on vibes?) Hampton, and Artie Shaw....but who is one Tenor, Trumpet(looks a little like Ziggy Elman, but he isn't playing it out of the corner of his mouth) Guitar, Drums, and Bass????? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZmgv1ywdkw&NR=1
  6. Undeserving in my opinion. Not HOF caliber. Well, his OBP. is low and that of course seems to be everything these days, but he won 8 gold Gloves...people rarely ran on his arm...and had more RBI's than Rogers Hornsby, Harmon Killebrew, Al Kaline, Jake Beckley, Jim Thome(So far), Willie McCovey, Fred McGriff, Willie Stargell, Harry Heilmann, Joe DiMaggio , Jeff Bagwell , Tris Speaker, Sam Crawford, Jeff Kent, Carlos Delgado or Mickey Mantle...all people in the top 50 RBI men of all time. Does that make him as good, if not better than them??? No...of course Dimaggio would have driven in more if not for WW2. We all know Mantle would have driven in more if not for the bad knees...and the alcoholism. But, this article points out that Dawson had 12 operations during his career. That horrible turf in Montreal really hurt his speed, (Speed was gone by 28)and had to effect his power to a point, yet as the writer from that same article said, "He still stole more than 300 bases to go with his 438 home runs. Along with Willie Mays and Barry Bonds, he's one of three major leaguers to accomplish the feat." And He did it without what Bonds used to help him(Though I am sure he would have still reached those numbers anyway) I think what Bonds, Sosa, and McGuire did unfortunately makes numbers like Dawson and others put up, look less impressive. I remember what a feared hitter he was, even after the knees were all but ruined. The MVP year with the last place Cubs??? 49 HR's 137 RBI's Next highest totals??? Keith Moreland, 27 Hrs 88 RBis . No one else even drove in more than 63. The year after the MVP, 24 HR's 79 RBI's, hit .303. Looks pretty so-so. But, 2nd highest B.A., tops in Hr's and RBI's The year after that(1989) he only played 118 games, 2 RBI's less than team leader than Mark Grace... Last year with the Expos, why he only hit 20 HR's and drove in only 78 RBI's. Well, still tops on that team. And remember what a huge stadium that joke of a park was??? What's my point??? Well, except for a few years in Montreal, he was surrounded by pretty motley crew of players in Montreal and Chicago. Oh sure, Ryne Sandburg and Tim Raines were teammates, but not big RBI guys, no one to really protect him. I think if you compare him to his contemporaries, he is a HOF'er. And comparing his 2774 Hits,(45th all time) 438 HR's (36th all time) 1591 RBI's (34th all time) are all HOF numbers, IMO.
  7. Some nice ones here on the BBC News site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8442877.stm I got the magic call at 9.30 last night that we weren't expected in today. A golden opportunity to catch up on paperwork. All the usual grumbling - why has the salt run out, why isn't my road clear etc. The Beeb wheeled out the 'why do the schools have to shut' 'controversy' again (as they annually wheel out the 'scandal that the GCSE pass rate had gone up/gone down'). They should have been sat in my heads office at 10.00 a.m. yesterday as angry parents demanded he shut the school and allow them to collect their kids (I expect he spent today fielding calls from angry parents about the place being shut). I've taught in this school for over 30 years and it's only been closed by the weather 6 times maximum! We sure know how to make storms in teacups. Thanks! Sounds like things are the same all over, though folks here in the south tend to error on the side of caution with school closings...but we sure panic and clear out stores even with a threat of a whole inch of snow, which is what they are predicting here in the ATL. Of course, we bought more than we needed today, just in case!
  8. Pictures???? Here in Hotlanta, it hasn't gotten out of the 30's for 5 straight days now! And they said the coldest air hasn't gotten here yet!
  9. I couldn't get the thing to work at all. Hmmm, you are right. Keeps snapping back to the CBS home page. Weird!
  10. I posted this a year or so ago, but couldn't find the post...so, if you want to, watch some here! http://www.cbs.com/video/?showname=classics/have_gun_will_travel&showtype=classics#video Ha! just looked again, you hae to go to page 3 to see the first show...makes perfect sense!
  11. My condolences....as mentioned above, 101 sounds like a magical number to reach!
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3NesJAGRbg Don't recall seeing much Charlie Barnet before. 2nd tune is more interesting than the first....
  13. Ain't that the truth! Thanks S.S., but that isn't it. I guess I am wrong about the title of the song, even though the way they sang it, it should have been it. Found some country act doing a song with the title I thought I heard, but wasn't close. I would guess, but not positive the band was British. Just weird, about the only time I ever put on a music channel these days is around the holidays, and have had MTV since the 80's. Never saw nor heard that tune. Oh well, perhaps next year I will find out who it was!
  14. Just saw a very 80's style video on VH1 Classic. Some guy in a brown suit, wearing a fedora and glasses without lenses. Goofy Mary and Joseph. Goofy kinda song, ska-ish. Think the title was Born on Christmas day, or He was Born on Christmas Day. They never said who it was at the beginning, or the end of the song.
  15. No doubt! I shutter to think what I will be punished with! Oops, forgot if you post twice in a minute, it turns into one post. Anyway, thought this was cute. Just don't watch if you are prone to seizures
  16. Randy!!! I had wondered where you were! I thought perhaps you had gotten pissed off, and just left. Very glad to see you back! Keep a postin'!
  17. Merry Christmas everyone!
  18. Just saw the story on Tv, then found it online. Can't even imagine what they have been through. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/22054759/detail.html
  19. Kind of an ironic statement to make, seeing that you started this thread pointing out that Murphy was "not a classic beauty" and "used to be a bit chunky." Is it Hollywood that overemphasizes a woman's physical appearance over what's in her heart and her mind, or is Hollywood just giving us what we want? Well, when I said she was not a classic beauty, it had nothing to do with weight, I should have added I found her cute. Back before she got rail thin. She was quite a bit heavier in Clueless. Then lost weight. How much? I don't know. Looked "healthy" in other movies several years back. I also said the post you just quoted, Women aren't meant to be as thin as the images we too often see in magazines, tv, or movies. And really, who wants to see them this thin??? I imagine the Perez Hilton's of the world, and some aged gossip writers that used to be young and pretty. But not most men, not that I know of at least. I wish something like her death would help get the word out that most guys really don't want women to get rail thin. Most polls I have seen show to be true. Most likely it won't though.
  20. He was one of the top starters in the NL last year.Keith Law says the 2nd best. Not sure of that, but top 5 for sure. 9 of the 10 seasons 200 or more innings(198 was the year he didn't reach 200) But, he seems to have a good year following a bad year record. For the braves, Melky Cabrera is a very good player, but not exactly the big bat we need. And we have a very good center fielder, with good speed in Nate McLouth. I see Melky's OBP pretty much sucks, which is surprising considering he played for the Yankees. I hear a lot of good things about the prospects the Yankees gave up. I imagine the braves have some other moves to make. Jason Heyward will likely get a chance to start in right field. But, someone with some bop needs to be acquired for left, or 1st.
  21. Man, that is sickening! It's just a crying shame what hollywood does to people. Women aren't meant to be as thin as the images we too often see in magazines, tv, or movies. And really, who wants to see them this thin??? I imagine the Perez Hilton's of the world, and some aged gossip writers that used to be young and pretty. But not most men, not that I know of at least. Honestly, I would have guessed someone like Lindsay Lohan would end up with a fate like this. She was so pretty, and mature looking around the time of Mean Girls. I thought she was going to become an Ann Margret lookalike. Now,4-5 years later at the ripe old age of 23, she looks "Old" absolutely terrible. Very Thin, unhealthy skin. Doesn't even seem like the same person. What happened??? She put on 5 pounds at one point and people told her she was getting fat??? Someone like Nikki Cox, who should have been the envy of most women, has all but ruined her face. Google Nikki Cox, and fish lips to see what looks like photoshopped images of her. Hollywood will obviously always be about the looks of the performers, but it would be nice if someone could have a "normal" figure, and normal face, and still be a star. People like Bette Davis and Meryl Streep were allowed to, but I guess those days are gone for good.
  22. I knew this was inevitable, and Allen didn't disappoint. He was going to say his holiday beef was a ribbon tied around his penis, but thank goodness he thought better of that.
  23. Damn...not a classic beauty, but sure came across as a sweet, funny girl in interviews. She used to be a bit chunky, back when she was in Clueless, I wonder if she was taking a ton of diet pills, or was on coke. Only 32.... http://www.tmz.com/2009/12/20/brittany-murphy-dies-cardiac-arrest
  24. saw a clip of the "cast" on Jay Leno's jaywalk gameshow...didn't know Joe Biden's name when his photo was shown. I think the girl at least knew he was the VP I truly don't get the reality shows out there. the Kardashians show...they people have done less than nothing. Someone just started to follow them around with a camera and presto, a star is born.
  25. Oh yeah, rewritten Christmas songs. Those with Dish network are all to familiar with we DISH you a Merry Christmas!
