  1. I've had the lp box for a long time. I see its now out on cd. Has anyone heard that? Wondering how it sounds, if its a needle drop.
  2. There's an lp version on eBay currently at $112 with about 21 hours left. Not mine, but it is in Providence.
  3. 1. I believe this is the band Roots. The alto solo is Arthur Blythe and I am guessing that the tenor solo is by Chico Freeman (hey, it could be Nathan Davis but I’m guessing Freeman). The piano I think is Don Pullen although the solo doesn’t go all the way there the way I expect most Pullen solos to go. I really like this band and this version of St. Thomas. 2. If there is any musician I like to think I can pick out its George Adams. I’d say given the background that this is George with the Gil Evans orchestra. The feeling I got from this was “Whoa, there’s got to be more than that”. So, is there? 3. Well I started out so strong and now I am back to squinting and shrugging. I have no idea who this is. I like the performance and the tenor sounds like an older musician who also kept abreast of developments so I’d guess maybe Frank Foster. 4. More confusion for me. I am thinking the tenor soloist is Lockjaw Davis. 5. Totally clueless although I liked it. 6. The alto solo is maybe by Sonny Criss. 7. Once again, no idea. This is why I like to listen to people’s BFT’s but don’t usually put on a public display of ignorance. I dug the soprano solo, I thought the piano solo was a little corny. 8. I didn’t really care for this. Can’t really come up with an intelligent guess. Probably would have enjoyed more had I been there when they played it. 9. I feel like I should be able to id the tune and the tenor, but I can’t. I was really struck by how the tenor held a single note for a long time at a couple of points. Overall I liked this. If I had to guess I’d say the piano reminded me of Tommy Flanagan. 10. I liked the sparse approach to the piano which still had, to me, great feeling. I am thinking this is someone more contemporary. The sax sounded like Chris Cheek to me. I burned these tracks to a disc and listened while driving around the past couple of days. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll get to the rest over the weekend.
  4. The Buddy and Ella Johnson set is one of my favorite box sets, great music, and a great booklet too.
  5. But for the insistent posts by Jim Sangrey I might have passed, but today I picked up Hadley Caliman's Iapetus for $5. Cover is M-, the record probably is VG+ to M-, I'll have to listen to it tomorrow.
  6. Can I get a download? Thanks.
  7. I have only heard a few of his Reservoir releases, have several earlier lps and a couple of the Reservoir cd's. I like Nick Brignola alot. There is a very nice video around that he did for a public tv station. It seems he chose to be a big fish in a small pond.
  8. Onyx 201 The Foremost! Onyx 202 Big Bands! Best liner notes ever? Pretty damn good anyway.
  9. I don't know what Cadence online will be like but I will definitely be subscribing at least for next year. I went ahead and called Mr. Haney as he invited people to do in the email but I haven't heard back as of yet.
  10. I erroneously posted in Great Finds in the Vinyl section, deleted and moved. I picked up 50 issues of "Jazz" magazine from between 1962 and 1968 (seems they changed the name to Jazz and Pop in 1967 sometime) and 15 issues of the Jazz Review from 1959 to 1960, $40 for the lot. Had to tell someone.
  11. Thanks for the headsup, I'll be looking for this one.
  12. This set has turned into a pricy item, $62 for a used copy, $150 for new at Amazon. Nevermind, I see several other retailers have for a much more reasonable cost of just under $40 w/shipping.
  13. My copy arrived today, will listen tomorrow (after the Red Sox win).
  14. I'm sure there are "faster" bluegrass bits, but EMD by David Grisman conveys a great sense of forward momentum.
  15. I just got this release in the mail yesterday. I have listened to about half so far and its a winner. I became aware of this date in another thread where Mike mentioned he was using Frank Basile on his next date, I am a nut for baritone and Frank does not disappoint. I'll be keeping an eye out for more by him. Good choice of tunes and a real group feel here.
  16. Curiosity about the banjo alone is probably enough for me to pick this up.
  17. We just got our first period of torrential rain here in RI which lasted about 30 minutes. Its expected to begin sustained rain and wind later today and be potentially hairy here tonight and tomorrow. You can't buy a gallon of water or a d battery here today. I got all the water we will need on Tuesday. Could still use a couple of d batteries though.
  18. My latest package came in yesterday, thanks Eric.
  19. Sorry you have such a negative opinion of Cadence. I wasn't thrilled when the went to the new format but I've gotten used to it (I've been a subscriber since around 1983). I believe the switch was made to try and keep the business viable by reducing costs. I feel Cadence has served a wide constituency well through the years. As far as doing things for a profit, well, that's business. Doing things for free, that's a hobby. I don't have personal knowledge of the financial circumstances of any of the Cadence employees but I feel I can safely assert no one's getting rich there. I've bought the magazine, bought records and cd's, and stereo equipment from Cadence and I haven't had a gripe yet, happy to say. I don't want to bore you with details of the customer service I've experienced but its all been good.
  20. The Gil Evans/Gary McFarland vinyl two-fer is an Impulse "Dedications" series two-fer. It the only time that Gary McFarland's Impulse album "Profiles" has ever been reissued, to this day, to my knowledge. "Profiles" has never come out on CD and has had no other vinyl reissue. The Gil Evans BN twofer was entitled 'Pacific Standard Time' and reunited the two PacificJazz albums by Evans. Colinmce wrote: One more nod to the Bluebird chronological sets which issued more or less the complete recordings of Goodman, Shaw and Miller; I have the Goodman and Miller series which set me back less than $20. Still looking for the Shaws all in one place. Bechet, Henderson, Hines and Tatum were also represented in smaller sets; there is also the classic Hampton box set. Any others? There was also a Complete Bunny Berigan series of twofers. There was also a Willie Bryant and Jimmie Lunceford set, three sides of Bryant and one of Lunceford. The Bryant sides have some Ben Webster solos from 1935 along with some Benny Carter on trumpet. Teddy Wilson is on some of the other Bryant sessions.
