Sorry you have such a negative opinion of Cadence. I wasn't thrilled when the went to the new format but I've gotten used to it (I've been a subscriber since around 1983). I believe the switch was made to try and keep the business viable by reducing costs. I feel Cadence has served a wide constituency well through the years. As far as doing things for a profit, well, that's business. Doing things for free, that's a hobby. I don't have personal knowledge of the financial circumstances of any of the Cadence employees but I feel I can safely assert no one's getting rich there. I've bought the magazine, bought records and cd's, and stereo equipment from Cadence and I haven't had a gripe yet, happy to say. I don't want to bore you with details of the customer service I've experienced but its all been good.

The 70s Twofer Jazz Reissue LP
Tom in RI replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
The Gil Evans/Gary McFarland vinyl two-fer is an Impulse "Dedications" series two-fer. It the only time that Gary McFarland's Impulse album "Profiles" has ever been reissued, to this day, to my knowledge. "Profiles" has never come out on CD and has had no other vinyl reissue. The Gil Evans BN twofer was entitled 'Pacific Standard Time' and reunited the two PacificJazz albums by Evans. Colinmce wrote: One more nod to the Bluebird chronological sets which issued more or less the complete recordings of Goodman, Shaw and Miller; I have the Goodman and Miller series which set me back less than $20. Still looking for the Shaws all in one place. Bechet, Henderson, Hines and Tatum were also represented in smaller sets; there is also the classic Hampton box set. Any others? There was also a Complete Bunny Berigan series of twofers. There was also a Willie Bryant and Jimmie Lunceford set, three sides of Bryant and one of Lunceford. The Bryant sides have some Ben Webster solos from 1935 along with some Benny Carter on trumpet. Teddy Wilson is on some of the other Bryant sessions. -
I have heard and enjoy United Soul Experience on Criss Cross. Good stuff, also with Seamus Blake.

Thanks for all the responses. I won't be bidding for the lp, I was just curious about the label. I'll keep an eye out for the Zim reissue.

I saw an eBay listing for a Zoot Sims/Al Cohn records on the Fred Miles Presents label. A google search didn't turn anything up except a popsike listing of the same lp sold in 2006 (for 127 usd). Can anyone tell me more about this label?

PM sent on 5 James Moody/Kenny Barron Fly Me to the Moon (Lonehill).

I've had good experiences with Sleeve City, have purchased jewel boxes, plastic bags for box sets and resealable mylar sleeves, great for protecting digipacks. They will send samples with an order.

I have wondered who was on that Sonny Stitt date (Argo 629), one of my favorite dates, maybe because it was also one of the first jazz albums I listened to a lot.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

So, can an mp3 download be considered a "boxset"? Do you get notes with these? -
Cymbalgroove (Mike Melito) releases new CD
Tom in RI replied to cymbalgroove's topic in Musician's Forum
Thanks for posting, I hope to order this shortly. -
Getting a copy of Way Out Wardell was quite a revelation for me in the '70's. It wasn't recorded by the Biharis I don't think but was issued on Crown. The version of Blue Lou is probably my favorite Wardell solo. It seems copies of this sold at a bit of a premium for awhile, even when still in shrink wrap with a 99 cent sticker in place.

If you want to stick your foot in the water on theses you can try this release: http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-session-great-rhythm-blues-r598370/review which can be had on Amazon for $3.50 new. I agree with what Stereo Jack said, otoh, I really like the 3 Richard Berry cuts which lead off the cd. -
The Spring 2011 organissimo Forum Fundraiser
Tom in RI replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
Hi Jim, sent a sum via Paypal. -
No idea what this specifically refers to... Refers to Matt Harrison going along swimmingly, like his head's in a good place, which means he's got his game all the way on, and then out of nowhere walking two and then throwing up a three run gopher ball, anf then immediately thereafter returning us to our regularly scheduled programming, like nothing ever happened. That was extra special because the gopher ball was hit by the 9th place hitter. There are some guys who are just famous for doing what you described, and yet I can't name a single one right now. The brain sometimes has a great way of forgetting pain. Loopy lefty Matt Young lost game 3-1 in 1992 while with the Red Sox, an 8 inning no hitter, 7 walks, 6 strikeouts.

The great Harmon Killebrew dies at 74
Tom in RI replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
He hit 40 or more dingers in the 60's in 6 seasons and had 39 in 1966 (and 42 in 1959), I'd imagine no else had more 40 home run seasons for that decade. The Red Sox announcers (Ken Coleman and ?) always made a point of saying his popups were "major league". Oops, Hank Aaron had 7 40 HR seasons in the 1960's. -
Well I have seen enough of Adrian Gonzalez and I no longer curse the day the Red Sox didn't get Mark Texeira. After that brutal start the Bosox are just 2.5 games out of first. Maybe a little lost in the shuffle, Ortiz is off to his best start in quite a few years. In the meantime, looks like I'll get a chance to see Lackey and Matsuzaka in Pawtucket in the coming days. Is there a pitcher more difficult to watch in the majors than Dice-K?

I mailed an lp to Germany about 3 weeks ago at a cost of $13.18. I believe the trip took about 10 days.

Never heard him play, but if he can't act then he has fooled a lot of people for a very long time.
-
Haven't seen this release, does Davis play bari, tenor, or both? I personally prefer him on baritone.

Baritone sax man Glenn Wilson and guitarist Rory Stuart will be spending the day at Connecticut College in New London next Friday. They will end the day with a concert at 7 pm. As a longtime fan of both I will be attending. If anyone else is in the area it will be $10 well spent. You will recognize me as the out of place looking middle age guy.
