  1. This thread has got me grabbing for some oldies but goodies. Playing Charlie Parker Montreal 1953 on Uptown right now. Some of this was released on Jazz Showcase in the 70's, now there were some awful pressings. Going to have to grab the Open Door 1953 stuff mentioned above.
  2. Just a note: Tom in RI's Zunes are apparently non-HD. The HDs are a world apart. Go figure, the older Zunes have hard drives and the newer Zune HD's are flash based. I am a late adopter (and cheap). Bebop, you have both, what are the features on the newer models that you like best?
  3. BFrank, I started a thread on Zune last summer: I've got two now, an 80 gig and a 120 gig. If you go with the hard drive iterations you should be able to score for around $100 or less. I bought my 120 refurbished on Cowboom for right around $100 and have been very happy with it.

    Thanks for the post.
  5. Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving! I have just slipped my turkey into the oven, at 14 lbs its more an overgrown chicken. I have also just ripped, sequenced, and burned disc 1 of the December Blind Fold Test. I will have disc two ready before the turkey comes out of the oven. Sorry to be a little tardy with this. If you want actual discs, please send a pm with your name and address. If you want a download I will be posting at Megaupload. Again, send a pm and I will forward the link. Apologies in advance if I have any pieces of music that have been on a recent BFT, I don't think I do.
  6. This set was highlighted on NPR recently.
  7. I saw a band with Anat Cohen, RI resident George Masso on trombone, Howard Alden on guitar, Marshall Wood on bass, and Gary Johnson on drums. The show was free, with a charity asking for donations at the door. The space was a small theater at the Lincoln, RI campus of CCRI. Only Alden and Wood had amplification. I am glad to say that the show had about 100 in attendance. Cohen played clarinet only during the first set and played a couple of songs on soprano during the second set. From the comments made I think only Alden and Cohen had played together before so they stuck to standards, except for a duet rendition of Shrevevport Stomps by Alden and Cohen and a choro piece. George Masso was the surprise for me, he must be in his mid 70's but his playing was energetic and focused. While this group had not played together before they are all pros who easily found a groove and were clearly were enjoying themselves. I spoke to Ms. Cohen briefly between sets, it will come as no surprise that she knows our own White Lightning.
  8. I remember Columbia released some Boris Rose Charlie Parker material way back when (One Night at Birdland). Has any other Rose material seen major label release?
  9. I enjoyed the past season even though my Red Sox couldn't quite get there.I am shocked, shocked I say, that the SF Giants took the series. Congrats to them, pitching rules. And along that line, what do you Ranger fans hear about how seriously they will work to keep Cliff Lee (and keep him out of NY)?
  10. He did a Miles Davis trib disc in 1992 called One For Dewey which I have but haven't listened to in quite awhile. The fact that I didn't get rid of it tells me I heard some merit in it last time I played it (available from 15 Amazon sellers for the no respeect price of .99 or less, both used and new). He also participated in some Frank Zappa sessions in the 1970's
  11. Is Goldwave free? I paid for my copy, serves as a frontend for the LAME encoder.
  12. I agree with Sidewinder, the Mingus piece Passions of a Man is great Halloween music, also the 1st minute or so of George Russell's recording of Round Midnight with Eric Dolphy. I had those two things on a loop a few years ago to great effect.
  13. Why would selling unopened discs be a problem here or anywhere?
  14. PM sent on: 57. A Handful Of Stars - Eddie Higgins - Scott Hamilton - Ken Peplowski (Venus) $7 144. Paradise Space Shuttle - George Adams Quintet (Timeless) $8 Thanks, Tom
  15. Well, I could never get myself to pull the trigger on either of the Emanon releases. I remember reading that one was in a metal container. How is the sound on Blowin Out the Cobwebs?
  16. IIRC the price on the Emanon cd's was obscene. I think Cadence had them for $90, for a two cd set. Matter of fact, they still have Blowin Out the Cobwebs, and its still $90.
  17. One of my friends had the 6 Parker Spotlight records documenting his Dial output when I was just getting into jazz. We listened to them a lot. As I recall, a nice production with decent notes. I bought the Warner Bros box set of same when it came out and I still have it. I have to say I remember liking the notes on the Spotlight set better.
  18. You might check out Amos Hoffman, Evolution, featuring oud. Also, Eric Freidlander's Broken Arm Trio featuring cello, bass and drums. Lastly, two dates by bassist Buell Neidlinger featuring his Buellgrass band, Big Day at Ojai and Swing Grass. As far as I can tell, Neidlinger has reissued some of Big Day at Ojai as a cd called Across the Tracks.
  19. At Her Majesty's Pleasure was the first CBBB lp I ever heard/owned. Picked it up on the Black Lion label while in college in the '70's. Definitely deserving of reissue.
  20. I don't own one but I have seen a unit comprised of two lucite discs with gaskets on the edges and holes in the middle that can be fixed to a record to protect record labels while cleaning. Evidently made by a guy right here in RI.
  21. Like Dan I am using my turntable mostly when digitizing an lp. Otherwise, since Father's Day I have been using an mp3 player with cassette adapter in my car which is where I do most of my listening.
  22. Oh my God, its the Happy Birthday, Tom memorial thread! Thanks one and all. Hey Sangrey, after so much anticipation I finally got a chance to hear some Iapetus yesterday, and it hit me. And I had my first Lambic Framboise last night, yummy! Oh, and AARP is sending me literature too. Oh happy day.
  23. Hey Chris, I enjoyed the 1st Jordan song, looking forward to the next.
