  1. I used to enjoy their Point-Counterpoint segment on 60 Minutes.
  2. And my family used to own a copy of the Twister game. So there you have it.
  3. Finally reading some of that Sherlock Holmes stuff. I've been meaning to for the last 30 or 35 years or so, but somehow something always came up.
  4. I think I'm at least a Master's Degree away from him.
  5. It would be hard not to reply, "Nice doggie."
  6. Isn't that a two-volume set?
  7. I read the whole series with pleasure, more than once, and I still couldn't tell a yardarm from a thingamajig.
  8. Ten or eleven months.
  9. Still digging the current season of Breaking Bad.
  10. Just open a store named "Eisenhower" across the street.
  11. At one point in the 80's I methodically worked my way through about 40 Wodehouse novels. I love Wodehouse, but I'd be the first to admit that I probably won't ever re-read quite a few of those.
  12. I happened to catch most of "Ghost World" on cable just a few days ago. Such a good movie. I hadn't seen it again since it was out in the theaters. Whatever happened to Thora Birch?
  13. I hear that he passed away. Oh no, that's Neil. Nevermind.
  14. Oh well, I think each episode has been a joy. To each his own. It depresses me that there are only two more episodes and then we've got to wait for a year.
  15. Second tier, so to speak, is freakin' terrific. Don't get me wrong.
  16. Sorry to hear of his passing. I went through the Deathworld trilogy, Bill the Galactic Hero, Make Room! Make Room!, and a bunch of his short stories back in my teen years. Haven't really re-visited him since, but always retained fond memories. True, not one of the 'big names' but I always thought of him as a solid second-echelon sf writer. Nothing wrong with that. RIP
  17. Like just about everybody else, I really liked "Casino Royale" (2006)----for once, a reboot that WORKED. "Solace" was a big comedown for me, mainly due to a weak script. Is the Bond series ever going to be able to muster two good movies in row?
  18. I find that Garcia-Marquez screams that with every literary breath he takes. It's an attitude that turns me off to a number of very different authors, but who have this flaw in common: Thomas Mann, Margaret Atwood, Saul Bellow (maybe the most overrated American novelist?), Milan Kundera, and others. Nabokov has enough humor and verbal brilliance to counteract this tendency. I'm with you on most of those authors, but personally, I think Bellow had some verbal brilliance at times (at other times he could be a bit annoying and pretentious.)
  19. That's pretty much where I'm at, too. Early on, it seemed like he was part of a back-to-basics movement in country. Now however, country is...well I don't know what the fuck it is.
  20. You can't indulge so much bad production (particularly in recent years) without it having some bad personal repercussions. ( )
  21. Really digging season 5 of Breaking Bad.
  22. Belated Happy Birthday Shawn! (I'm missing 'em all lately!)
  23. Sorry I missed it! Hope it was very happy indeed.
  24. Loved the flashforward prologue, and all the stuff with Mike. And Ted is alive? WTF?
