  1. I preordered both. Have no real idea what to expect with the Braxton set but I'm totally open to hearing this music. Should be a trip!
  2. Couldn't help but reminded of a recent statement by Pat Metheny in Guitar Player magazine when he was asked to give advice to aspiring guitarists. Pat's reply: "Aways try to be the worst player in every band you are in" P.S. Maybe I'm naive, but it's entirely possible that McCoy actually wanted to play with Derek and the other guitarists. That's good enough for me. I've been on a major McCoy Tyner kick for the last few months; and I've purposely listened to very little Derek for the better part of a year. For me, this release will be the perfect reintroduction into his work.
  3. Some good stuff! Avery Sharpe holds things down nicely on bass.
  4. Looks interesting...(Derek & McCoy do Coltrane?) CDU Link
  5. Missile Blues by Wes Montgomery. Some very fine Mel Rhyne on this one as well!!

    Ralph Towner

Especially his solo chord melody arrangements. They are so unique and creative. He's a monster! My grasp of the technicalities is limited in the extreme (I'm no musician) but there is definitely something very personal about the way he approaches them. IMO his classical sensibilities play a large part in making his approach unique. To call his solo arrangements "chord melody" really doesn't do them justice. He effortlessly goes between chord melody, bassline comping, and very subtle combinations of all three elements (chord, melody, bass). All this wouldn't mean all that much if the music wasn't so good. He's monster, but his arrangements and compositions are interesting. That's what keeps me coming back.

  8. That thread was also started by tranemonk... I did a double-take as well. I do admire TM's persistence though. P.S. Too bad the odds are against a set.

    ECM Touchstones

You wouldn't want to dilute the brand. Something has to give when a CD that routinely sells for $17.99 is reissued with a $9.99 price tag. I think ECM is just setting us up for the inevitable hi-rez download/subscription service.
  12. Papo Vazquez

  15. I just caved and bought this since it is running low--the only strategy I have for buying Mosaics without entirely ruining my finances. I don't think I'll regret it, will I Sundog? This is an excellent set, great writing and playing by everyone involved. Very interesting to listen to a young Tony Williams! Especially knowing what was to come.
  16. Mott The Hoople- I'm A Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso
  17. In addition to many already mentioned, as a sideman... Gene Harris Trio Plus One
  18. In all it's ragged glory Don't Do It by The Band.
  19. Very true! The end of an era. Spent a lot of Sunday afternoons listening and being turned onto great music I may of otherwise ignored. No hip trendy B.S. musical or otherwise... just fine music being served up by someone who obviously loves it.
  20. Jerry Gonzales and Fort Apache Band
  21. Bireli channeling Jaco
  22. None finer! Anchor Porter for me.
