  1. I've liked all his films very much as well, but after this one, to me, they all seem amateurish in comparison. edit to add that I've still been thinking about this film quite a bit. Not planning on watching anything else for a couple weeks to fully let this one sink in.
  2. Something about that photograph just made me laugh out loud. It belongs in an evil, alternate universe.
  3. I was going to comment about this one in the film corner, but this is one of those films that deserves its own thread. I am interested to see what you all think about this film. I don't want to say too much, but for me this was by far and away the best film of 2007. I feel that this will be one of the defining films of the decade for American cinema.
  4. Along with the Beatles, Jimi was the first artist I listened to at the advent of my "musical awakening" in college. His music showed me so much that I'd not seen before. Here, 13 years later, his music still excites me. I love all his studio albums, along with most of the various releases that have come out on CD throughout the years. My favorite is still Band of Gypsys....I love that direction he was heading in towards the end of his life. A shame he didn't live longer to bless us with more.
  5. I don't mind saying it again....this was my best purchase of 2007. I guess alot of that had to do with the fact that I was completely unfamiliar with the majority of the material on here, and so much of this music is so nasty, groovy, dark and exciting. There's no music that I've heard anywhere else that sounds like this. Miles did it again, and its so much fun to hear.
  6. Not sure if I would catagorize Andrew Hill as "late 60s advanced hard bop", but "Dance With Death" and "Passing Ships" are two of my favorite "advanced" jazz recordings from the era.
  7. Thanks for the heads up! Just picked up the Cecil Taylor for $10 including shipping!! WOO HOO!!!
  8. Please share your thoughts once you listen! There's a discussion thread out there under New Releases. It was my favorite release of 2007.
  9. "And what do you do now, George?" "I'm a marine biologist"
  10. I actually didn't attend this one with you guys....it was a last minute decision to skip it and just meet up with ya'll the next day. And from the multiple horror stories I've heard, I'm very glad I didn't go. Listening to Jim Neumann describe the experience was very funny!
  11. Sounds like fun, ANSL77!!
  12. Looks like Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov wants to leave the club this January. Always liked him.....I hope he stays in England.
  13. The Bennie Green Mosaic Select - disc 3. Yet another example where taking a leap of faith on an artist I wasn't familiar with has paid back some nice dividends! Really love this Soul Stirrin' session.
  14. The one time I saw him with Tyner, he played a bit loud for my tastes.
  15. Sorry to hear this jazzmoose. You seem like a good guy, and it sucks when bad things happen to good people. If I could re-locate anywhere right now, it would be Oregon...its a great place, and seems like it would be a perfect place to start anew. Best of luck.
  16. Received my 4 disc set and went straight to watching the US Theatrical cut, which I had never seen before. Quite the different viewing experience from the 1992 Director's cut! I haven't quite pulled together all my thoughts on it yet, but I do prefer the 1992 ending to the "happy" ending from the original. Also, I didn't mind Deckard's narration that much at all. It was interesting to see the film that way....and with all the horror stories I'd heard about the narration, was expecting something much worse. Next week I think I'll take in the Final cut as well as the documentary. This is a very nice DVD set, by the way! I was impressed at how good the sound and picture were, even the Theatrical cut (which is on the same disc as the International version and the 92 Directors cut).
  17. Bought this for myself last Christmas....a true gem. I will spin some of it tonight!
  18. Hey Mark! My dad gave me a DVD of Bob Dylan's Newport Folk Festival perfomances. Really cool stuff. I also got some cash....thinking about getting either the Parlan or Farrow Mosaic set.
  19. Well, I'm very excited for this weekend. Some potentially exciting Premier League matchups on Saturday morning, including Aston Villa vs. Man City and Liverpool vs. Portsmouth. But Sunday is the real reason to get excited, with a couple potentially epic matches beginning with AC Milan vs. Inter Milan, followed by Barcalona vs. Real Madrid. Sorry Van Basten II, I know its normally you who gives us all the heads up on the weekend's action ( ), but this weekend is particularly special because I will be visiting my father's place for the holidays, and he has a dish, which means I'm going to actually get to watch these matches!!! Enjoy the beautiful game this weekend, all!
  20. Dear thanks to all of you who spoke highly of the Kocsis set on Phillips. I picked up this set as a christmas present to myself, and its all I've been listening to for the past two weeks. Marvelous stuff.
  21. Best of luck!
  22. Watching Marseille play right now is like pulling out my own teeth. They are playing horribly. Liverpool is playing well, by that meaning they are properly exploiting Marseille's shitiness.
  23. Miles Davis - The Complete On the Corner sesisons, without a doubt, was my best purchase. I can't get enough of it. The Mingus Sextet at Cornell was another memorable one. My favorite new release was Roscoe Mitchell - Composition/Improvisation Nos. 1, 2, & 3 As for straight reissues, the two new ones on ECM (Dewey Redman & Bennie Maupin) have made a strong impression, as did Andrew Hill's "Compulsion" and "Change".
  24. I've never seen a good movie with Will Smith in it, so I'm going to pass.
