  1. So I'm working from home today due to the ice storm, and am spinning disc 2 of this set while having my morning cup of coffee. Dizzy is such a fantastic player. I'm listening to the "Soundin' Off" session right now....always liked his playing on this session since I first got this set. His solo on "(I Don't Stand A) Ghost of a Chance) is devastating. Also really impressive is Walter Bishop's playing here. He compliments Dizzy's mood really nicely. This disc also has a few tracks from the "Star Bright" session, which I also love. I'm not a big fan of Hank Mobley's style of play, but I have to say that this session ranks with my favorite work of his along with "Workout" and his Cafe Bohemia recordings with Art Blakey. Folks, again, if you don't have/aren't familiar with this material, GET THIS SET!! Its a gem.
  2. That Lyon/Rangers game should be a good one as well.
  3. I'm praying for this supposed ice storm to roll through the Chicagoland area, which will enable me to work from home tomorrow, and thus be able to catch the Liverpool / Marseille match without any distractions!! :rsmile:

    Pepper Adams

    I agree with you.
  5. Wow. I really don't know what to say. I don't want this board to not exist....hell, I don't even like thinking about this board not existing. To say its been an invaluable resource is a gross understatement, and even more sadly, I wouldn't have met so many good people (whether in person or in cyberspace) if it wasn't for this board. This has me thinking about how I may have really taken this place for granted alot of the time, and that makes me sad. Count me in as someone who would be a paid subscriber.....I really don't care how much the fee is. This place is very important. If this place does go, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Jim for keeping this wonderful community around for the last 5 years, and to all of you for teaching me so much.

  7. Mark, any way you can post/link it?
  8. I've enjoyed Potter for years, and agree that he's much better in person than on record. This group came through the Jazz Showcase a couple years ago and they were really something. I'm looking forward to checking out this release!
  9. Well, Denver-Chicago turned out to be a barn-burner, with some awesome plays on both sides of the ball. One of the best games I've watched this season. It really was. I don't have much hope for the rest of the Bears' season, but yesterday's game was absolutely incredible.
  10. "Strawberry Fields Forever" has some great drumming.
  11. The Jewel In the Lotus - wow, what a journey! An excellent recording! ECM chose two great ones to reissue here.
  12. Does anyone else think the track "Excursion" from The Jewel In the Lotus is terrifying?
  13. Congrats, Paul!
  14. Listening to "The Struggle Continues" right now for the first time. I'm really enjoying it! Some of the tunes on here are surprisingly "straight ahead". Now, I'm sure I haven't heard as much of Dewey as many of you here, but based on the stuff I've heard with Ornette, Keith Jarrett, Old and New Dreams, and some of his sessions as a leader, this is one of his most accessible recordings overall. Not that that's a bad thing at all! Just Dewey in a different light than what I'm used to hearing from him. I'm looking forward to listening to this one much more. Definitely recommended, especially if you're new to Dewey or if you're generally averse to more "adventurous" jazz. Anyways, "The Jewel and the Lotus" is shipping today from CD Universe. Can't wait to hear that one!
  15. Tried it once. Never again. And I enjoy not being sober.
  16. Neil Young tomorrow night. One solo acoustic set, one electric set with the band!!!
  17. Sorry to hear that. They seem affect people differently in different ways. I know that for me, I can usually kill a cold in two or three days if I do nothing but sleep, drink fruit or vegetable based drinks, and eat soup and bread (no going to work or doing anything physically or mentally draining). But this only works if you start this immediately upon feeling symptoms. Once its got you, not sure if there's anything you can do but wait it out...
  18. Pretty much any of the football (soccer) announcers on the Spanish networks.
  19. I believe you mean Illinois and Wabash. You are correct....sorry about that! Dusty Groove is a bit off of the Mile, but easily accessible via a short cab ride.
  20. "Che: A Revolutionary Life" by Jon Lee Anderson.
  21. The Jazz Record Mart is in the vicinity (Illinois and Wacker). Nice for browsing, with a good deal to be found occasionally, especially if you are into vinyl, but overall a bit overpriced.
  22. Dubya is to planet Earth what Marion Meadows is to jazz
  23. I've been looking forward to this one more than any other movie all year. Unfortunately, its not playing at any theaters near here yet. I'll report back when I see it.
  24. Nearly every time I've been "set up", its failed. Never tried online dating. However, when I've met a girl unintentionally without any pre-conceived intentions in the air, its worked out (meaning a second date) pretty much every time. Its nice that way because sparks can fly naturally, and the chemistry between man and woman can just follow its normal course. Putting that forced or artificial element in there just adds too much pressure, and I've found it more difficult to just be myself knowing that I was put in that situation, and the expectations that go along with that situation, rather than just falling into it. Now, as far as that leading to a relationship, that's a whole other ballgame. But a few fun dates are always nice!
