If I like _____, then I'll LOVE the Anthony Braxton set
sal replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't know if this is possible. Braxton is like no other. That's why he's great. You'd be better off listening to one of his availiable recordings from the era to see if he's to your liking. -
Thanks Rob!

"Midnight's Children" - Salman Rushdie I'm about a quarter of the way through it and still not too sure what I think about it. Has anyone else read any Rushdie novels?

"Time Will Tell" is a personal fav. Escapes me what album its on, maybe Kaya?

I got back from Grant Park about 3 hours ago....would have posted sooner, but I've been in bed feeling quite unwell, which is why I left the Jazz Fest early (sorry Mark and everyone else there...was looking forward to meeting everyone at the velvet! I did manage to see some great music today though. Brian Lynch was very good guesting with the Willie Pickens trio. And Vijay Iyer's quintet did a suite they composed for the festival. It was really excellent music...his electric guitar player left a strong impression on me. Don't recall his name, but he was originally from India, and it came out in his playing in a strong way. He would incorporate these phrases that sounded so similar to a sitar into his improvisations. It was really something. Never heard anything quite like that before. If I can get away from the office tomorrow, I hope to catch a train in to see Ornette. edit to correct an incomplete sentence...sorry, wasn't feeling well when I orignally posted this last night

Hey Joe! Its good to be back. I hope all is well. :rsmile:

I've been listening to these tracks as well. They are gems.

Thought I'd add that I also ordered a copy for a cousin this evening. Such great music. Thus far, my favorite pieces are the two versions of "Nonaah"....it makes me wonder if I've ever heard 2 such different versions of a "same song" one one album that are so different, yet both SO impressive?? The previously unreleased material is wonderful. Listening to the Berkeley solo version of "Off Five Dark Six" right now. edit for grammer

I’ve been spending alot of time with Nonaah over the last few days. This is very affecting, enjoyable music that has given my music-deprived self a much a needed jolt and a blast of refreshment. I've been spending so much time at work, outside in the warm weather, and reading books that I've not been listening to much music this summer. Don't even think about it...pick this one up. It's marvelous, and I think it's becoming my favorite solo Roscoe record. Glad I checked in on the board when I did. Thanks Chuck!

"Diary" by Chuck Palahniuk Question: Can anyone recommend a good book on African history surveying the last 100 years or so?

This is great! Thanks so much, everyone!

Agree! I'm really starting to realize that its very difficult to go wrong when you've got Tommy Flanagan in your band.

After years of meddling and casual listening, I'm really starting to get into the blues. However, I feel now like I did when I first got into jazz. Its such a huge world of music, and I feel lost as to where to start. I was wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction by giving me the names of any albums that you would consider absolutely essential to any blues collection? Also, if there are any multi-CD collections/box sets out there that stand out from the rest, that would be great too. I'm looking more towards the middle/later periods of blues (1940's onward??), as I have quite a bit of the early Mississippi stuff, and am looking for where to go from there. Thanks for your help, all. I did check an earlier thread, but it really seemed to be aimed at you folks who know your stuff well already and were looking for recs to build your existing collections. I feel more like a newbie!!

I'm on my second one, which currently has stamps from 10 countries. Will be getting my third one this year.

Nicely put, Randy. I too remember being very impressed by his dynamics the one time I saw him play about 4 years ago. Dynamics in jazz drumming is SO critical and there aren't may drummers who have mastered that concept. He's an exciting, tasteful drummer. Glad to see him get his own thread.

There was some discussion on this in the Film Corner thread. I liked it alot until the very end, which seemed completely illogical and ruined the whole movie for me. Nice performance by Russell Crowe, though.

I'm sure some may disagree, but I've never found Mosaic's sales to be anything special. At least not special enough to hold off on an order for. They may be something like "certain sets 10% off" or free shipping, but if you're looking to order Mosaic boxes, you're gonna be spending alot of money anyways. They don't have scheduled sales for the most part anyways. I say don't wait!

I thought his performance in "Monsters Ball" was very affecting. He never got enough credit for that small role.
-
This is sad news. I think he was a talented actor with a bright career ahead of him.

Sports fans time to reveal it all !!!!
sal replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't think there is another sports team that I feel more passion for than the Tricolor (aka the Mexican National Soccer Team) I'm a diehard Chicago Bears fan...always will be. I hate the Packers with all of my heart and take great pleasure in their misfortunes. My favorite international soccer clubs are Manchester United (my absolute fav), Barcelona and Chivas de Guadalajara. AC Milan and Real Madrid are my peeves, although I must admit both are fun teams to watch play. As a University of Illinois alumni, I bleed blue & orange, thus, I always support the Fighting Illini. Lastly, as I grew up watching the Andre Dawson-era Cubs and the Michael Jordan Bulls, and having been huge fans of both teams, I feel sentimental connections to both teams still, and still want them to win, despite the fact that I am no longer interested in baseball or NBA basketball. -
Don't let that stop you. Like jlhoots says, there's not even a remote resemblance.

Just received "One Too Many Salty Swift And Not Goodbye" from Jazz Loft, and have been listening to it all morning. Wow!!
