  1. Mets have acquired Stroman. For what has not been announced yet.
  2. I see several auctions on eBay for the Hot Jazz set.
  3. That’s a bummer. With the way the weather in Spain is, maybe you need some cool jazz.
  4. Today’s update from Mosaic: “The Herman First Herd and Third Herd is almost at your doorstep. I’ve been listening to Andreas Meyer’s reference discs of his newly restored work on this material and it is music worth hearing for the first time or for the umpteenth time because he has worked miracles in a number of ways. The embryo of the First Herd, the Decca and World Transcription dates from 1943 and 1944, has never sounded better. And take into consideration that those World sides have seen very little light of day since they were made available for radio broadcast only and not for public consumption. The Carnegie Hall Concert of 1946 has been maligned with distant and inferior sound for years, even with the much improved Verve 2 CD release of a few years back. You will hear this concert like it has never been heard before. The MGM sides are good and nice to have finally in one fell swoop, but when you hear the Mars sides (all of these MGM/Mars sides by the way are taken from the original tape transfers) you’ll have a new appreciation on how tight the band was and how masterful the soloist are (Urbie Green, Arno Marsh, Dave McKenna just to name a few). The booklet for the set is full of great insights by Jeff Sultanof, photos are rare and the discography is completely updated. I know most of you have been waiting for this set for over a year and for that we apologize. All sorts of unexpected delays has made you and I wait until September for this Mosaic offering. We hope you will not be disappointed.”
  5. Today’s update from Mosaic: We have completed the transfer and mastering stage of this 8-CD set. Rudy Van Gelder’s original tapes are uniformly superb and Malcolm Addey has done an exquisite mastering job. Hank and company never sounded better. Lee Morgan, who’s on six of the sessions, is at the top of his game throughout. Billy Higgins drives 9 of the 13 sessions with incessant swing. Bob Blumenthal has completed his typically insightful and informative liner notes. I’ve amassed a large amount of excellent Francis Wolff photographs from the actual sessions and am in the painful process of choosing want to include and what to drop because of space. The booklet at designer and printer. We have a long relationships with individuals instead of corporations and summer vacations are impacting the schedule. Apologies for the delay and we are eyeing a September release.
  6. I saw something on Bleacher Report where the Mets would trade Noah to the Pods for a bunch of prospects and then send some of them to Toronto for Stroman. That doesn’t make any sense to me. Pitching coaches and batting coaches are in no win situations. They will always get blamed.
  7. I would be shocked if the Yankees and Mets make a major trade; Mets ownership doesn’t have the guts to make that kind of move. They would be worried about the fan reaction if Syndergaard helped the Yanks win a WS or two. It’s more likely that he’d go to the Astros or Twins or not be traded at all. You might find this interesting, Mets intensify efforts to deal Noah Syndergaard, must convince Wilpons
  8. Since part of Once in a Time deals with the Manson family, the following articles in today's Arts and Leisure section may be of interest. Why Pop Culture Still Can’t Get Enough of Charles Manson. Written by Ed Sanders of the Fugs, who lived with the Mansons for awhile during the trial, when he was reporting for the LA Free Press. 9. I saw it light last night and also loved it. It's different than other Tarantino movies for the most part. I'd label it his ode or paean to Hollywood in the 60s, to the way things used to be. He recreates the 60s in a way that takes you back, if you were alive at that time. He also tries to rewrite history a little bit or creates a history that he wishes had happened. More I should probably not say.
  10. This weekend so far shows two things: Cashman didn’t do a very good job in building a starting staff in the offseason (although in fairness you couldn’t have foreseen Severino being out this long) and sellers will be holding the Yankees up for starting pitching; the price keeps going up.
  11. How did the ending differ? By the way the movie (although not by name) is discussed in the book The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen, who writes about the War from a Vietnamese perspective. He’s not complimentary about the movie or Coppola. Great book.

  19. I haven’t gotten to the vocals yet. I will probably skip over them. $10-20 is a heck of a bargain. I bought the whole set (including book and box) for $45.
  20. I picked up a sealed set for almost next to nothing on eBay and started to listen to it. Contrary to what I previously said, I like it. He has a beautiful tone.

  24. Before the Mets arrived on the scene I was a Tigers fan for a couple of years. Sort of remember him. He had a decent career, not spectacular. Had a couple of good seasons for them, in wins and losses. RIP.
