  1. Bill, PM sent. A question about this record. On various cuts, it sounds like there's a harpsichord (or maybe the pianist is getting the piano to play like that) but it sounds unusual.
  2. Why would you think so, Mr. Pop?
  3. The combination of Pepper and Byrd is what makes these special. Kalo, I would also recommend Pepper's 10 to 4 at the Five Spot, one of my favorites.
  4. Sounds like the beginning of a Sam Spade novel.
  5. Thank you all very much. I bought this through Verve on iTunes but couldn't find any discographical info (even searched the web so Mike wouldn't jump on me )
  6. "Is this an Addey or a McMaster?" I think the question was why have you listened to this 100 freakin' times?
  7. Well, that certainly clears it up. You're right not too clear. What I meant was that the RVGs were for a wider audience.
  8. I'm trying to find out who besides Buddy played on this Verve date but can't find any information. Can anybody list the musicians. Thanks.

    Lou Donaldson

I think there's something to what Dan says. Also, I don't know that his style changed all that much over time; he still gets that great sound out of his horn that he did back in the 50s so he gets overlooked.
  10. IMHO, it's an overactive imagination. The brain can play many tricks on us. To spend 3 hours listening to white noise seems like (a) a waste of time and (b) an indication that you have too much time to waste doing nothing.
  11. Well, I have none of these and all of these look like must haves for me so I'll be getting them all. Actually, I have Silver's Blue but the rest I'll be getting.
  12. How about Bird's version of White Christmas?
  13. I guess the whole idea, if I'm not repeating anybody, that these were titles that might be harder to get and would have a more limited audience, hence the title of the series, whereas the RVGs would have a wider audience. I think over time that may not have been proven correct, e.g. Soul Shouting, True Blue and so on.
  14. Ordered a copy earlier this week thanks to Evan.
  15. I'm looking forward to Cinderella Man, which is the story of Gentleman Jim Braddoc, the depression boxer. Great article about him in SI this week.
  16. I agree with Evan; she's a find and what a voice. Her range as she moves up and down the register is pretty amazing. I have to get this too.
  17. You must have been flippin out when you wrote that in the wee hours . But it's good advice. I wouldn't feel too bad about getting a burn of a cd, be it Mosaic or not, that's oop. The artist/the company have gotten their royalties and I don't believe you're cheating anybody.
  18. I would have to think they overlap and I strongly doubt that there would alternate takes on the Best of. That would not be the approach of that kind of set. One thing that the Complete doesn't have is the JATP work.
  19. I agree with the prior two points. I think it's not so much as an obit of Percy Heath but perhaps of MJQ and what they represented. However, I agree with everything he says, especially the state of today's music or what passes as such.
  20. I thought that was a watched pot never boils. Not sure what it has to do with your point however
  21. Can't say I disagree with you.
  22. Let's see in the space of a thread you've maligned two great musicians doing incredibly great work and shown yourself not to know that much. Not bad work in the space of a day.
  23. Isn't that like some sign of the devil or whatever?
  24. Only one Mitchell and it's Blue
