Complete Clef/Verve Count Basie and more!
Brad replied to bluesForBartok's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You got the same email saying they're shipping my set??? Oh well, I guess with 8 discs, we can share it. Ron, They told me they're sending me two of your discs. The rest are going to Ed -
15 years is not too old. Is it rare? I don't know, $30 maybe.

I got this but I can't say it's primo Sonny. I'm not saying he's going through the motions but he's trotting out the old licks (which is what I guess he's good at) but there's no fire like there is on some of his later and last recordings.

School mistakes huge burrito for a weapon

We should rename GOM Burrito Boy for bringing this up -
I'm a little bored with the topics this evening...
Brad replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
They've got some good stuff there in new arrivals, top of the list being George Coleman's Amsterdam After Dark, just a great cd. There's also an Art Pepper Tribute to Bird on a label called jazzbank that I never heard of. Little too expensive. They also have the complete Evans at the Vanguard, just a great set of cds. Expensive (Japan) but worth it. -
Yes, and of Monk fame too.

Charlie Parker - Dean Benedetti Mosaic
Brad replied to EKE BBB's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This is a numbered set and whether it's limited or not is irrelevant (the LP version obviously wasn't). The reason that there are no music bites on the web site is obvious: the sound is not that good and the can only be appreciated by sustained listening. One little fragment will probably turn you off. This is a set worth picking up, minor criticisms aside. If you can't tolerate bad sound or are not a Parker disciple, then this set is not for you. But if you love Bird like I do, the set is a must. It seems that this thread or the idea for it gets trotted out on a pretty routine basis. -
I'll be playing some MJQ. My condolences to the Heath family. RIP and thanks.

Indiana moves towards Daylight Savings Time
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Why don't we split the state into two new states and call one Eastern Indiana and the other Western Indiana? The only hangup will be what state will they be talking about when you play "Back Home in Indiana." -
Damit, What Does It Take To Get A Good Light Bulb?
Brad replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You guys need to get out more -
Recommended here also. Some like this better than the Mosaic.

Not anything about these, but isn't this from an overly commercial period and quite different from his classic BN period. Reading all these comments, I'm probably on the fence about 'em now.
-
I'm not too familiar with the people Alfred mentioned. Are they producers/engineers or label owners and what's the label. Sorry for the dumb questions.

For the ignorant, what's a podcast? Downloading a broadcast to your ipod. If so, how do you do it?
-
Second these recs. Been listening to these two lately. Don't think anybody mentioned Unsung Hero on Epic. Also what about Taking Care of Business. That's a good one.

Brad, you missed my last message from Michael, which I relayed in another thread. He made it pretty clear to me that the three Select concept is going to be a go. Dan, I actually did see that post. I'm just very doubtful, however. I'll believe it when I see it. I hope you're right.
-
I've also discussed this with Michael (both in person and email) many times. Dan is essentially correct. However, I'm not very hopeful that this will ever come out.

Has anybody heard of this music burning service. My son downloaded and he says it gets songs through Itunes but it's free. Without iTunes it wouldn't work. That doesn't sound too kosher and songs for free? I'm a little suspicious.
-
Actually, some of the ebay scam ads I've received are so bad that you wonder why these people even bothered: typos, poor grammar, etc.
-
I think the retro was from a different period, his classic period. This all 69 to 72, more commercial. Doesn't sound like anything I'll be interested in.

Anyone ever buy a disc from
Brad replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I bought a cd from them and got the same message. Gave me a good laugh. I don't think they take themselves too seriously (which is nice to see). -
Didn't take this guy long to get banned. Must be a record. Reminds me of that old slogan: LSMFO. You've never heard of that one? Lucky Strikes Means Fine Organissimo
-
For that price, it's a steal. Unbelievable deal you got.

What Are Your Earliest Memories of Music?
Brad replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My earliest recollection is listening to my parents records, espcially broadway scores, like the Pajama Game, West Side Story and Guys and Dolls. They also had George M. Cohan records. I remember H-A-R-R-I-N-G-T-O-N spells Harrington. I can still remember that tune a little bit. I'm whistling as I write this. -
20 years is a long time to look for a record. Incredible that you couldn't get it before now. Was it worth the wait?
