  1. I guess the whole idea, if I'm not repeating anybody, that these were titles that might be harder to get and would have a more limited audience, hence the title of the series, whereas the RVGs would have a wider audience. I think over time that may not have been proven correct, e.g. Soul Shouting, True Blue and so on.
  2. Ordered a copy earlier this week thanks to Evan.
  3. I'm looking forward to Cinderella Man, which is the story of Gentleman Jim Braddoc, the depression boxer. Great article about him in SI this week.
  4. I agree with Evan; she's a find and what a voice. Her range as she moves up and down the register is pretty amazing. I have to get this too.
  5. You must have been flippin out when you wrote that in the wee hours . But it's good advice. I wouldn't feel too bad about getting a burn of a cd, be it Mosaic or not, that's oop. The artist/the company have gotten their royalties and I don't believe you're cheating anybody.
  6. I would have to think they overlap and I strongly doubt that there would alternate takes on the Best of. That would not be the approach of that kind of set. One thing that the Complete doesn't have is the JATP work.
  7. I agree with the prior two points. I think it's not so much as an obit of Percy Heath but perhaps of MJQ and what they represented. However, I agree with everything he says, especially the state of today's music or what passes as such.
  8. I thought that was a watched pot never boils. Not sure what it has to do with your point however
  9. Can't say I disagree with you.
  10. Let's see in the space of a thread you've maligned two great musicians doing incredibly great work and shown yourself not to know that much. Not bad work in the space of a day.
  11. Isn't that like some sign of the devil or whatever?
  12. Only one Mitchell and it's Blue
  13. With an hour to live, I'm with Lon, music is the last thing I'll be thinking about. I'll probably be running around screaming my bloody head off!
  14. I think for the oviously well informed like Chuck or Jim it may be a big yawn but for the rest of us, it's a good read. It also depends on your degree of knowledge. The more you know, the less likely you'll find it all that good.
  15. I agree! I saw it several weeks ago; very good! Same here fascinating. Even my wife loved it.
  16. It probably went oop because they exhausted all copies or they had reached the time limit. I'm on the opposite side of Sundog on this. I didn't like the set. Listened to it twice. Not just my thing. But I know people swear by it. Lon (jazzbo) is a good person to give an appraisal of the set.
  17. I hear what Chuck is saying but I have to side with Brownie on some of his points. Lonehill has been putting out material that I've never heard of. Both of what Chuck and Brownie are saying is the Best of the West which Michael C was going to put out I believe but Lonehill beat him to it so now he's not going to do it. If it's legal in Europe, why not? The answer would be to standardize the laws internationally but I doubt that's going to happen. I don't buy Definitive but I have no trouble buying Lonehill even though they're the same company. Fresh Sounds is bringing out things not otherwise available I believe and it sounds good to me. Unfortunately, as with most issues there's no right or wrong side on this issue.
  18. Why not just buy the Prestige box. I believe it's got everything there and you'd have it all in one place.
  19. I'm not seeing real recs here. Sounds like one to be avoided.
  20. Can't help here but when I was a kid, we lived in South America and the short wave was essential. I would always listen to the VOA and Willis' jazz show, with the A Train as the theme. Remember those times fondly.
  21. I found it very helpful and a good read. I didn't know enough at the time to say it was flawed so I'll defer to others on that point.
  22. I've only had positive experiences with them. When I received a damaged Dexter cd set last year and wrote to them about it, they asked that I return it with an explanation and a new one was on its way shortly thereafter.
  23. I can see it now: "Give me ipod or give me death!" or "You have nothing to lose but the ipod itself!"
  24. Thank God Allen has joined the Board and saved us. I'm sure Jim is eternally grateful
  25. That's OK--I'll just get Chris to send me an original autographed manuscript of his essay, and some of the priceless Basie memorabilia he must have buried in one of his famous closets. Too late. I heard he gave it to Phil Schaap
