  1. As a self styled Bud Powell nut, I would probably agree with Jim. There are plenty of other things you could buy for this. This was an album recorded at Birdland upon his return to the US and he had just gotten over tuberculosis (more or less) and needed to help pay off some debts. I happen to like some of the Mythic Sound released by Fantasy as well as the one recently released on Piadrum Records. Some of the Verve material is not bad although uneven. If you can get hold of his mid 40s material, you'll hear some playing. I also like some of his Steeple Chase material, like Swedish Pastry, and Black Lion material like Salt Peanuts. Even Strictly Confidential on Black Lion, solos recorded by Francis Paudras in his apartment isn't bad. The RCA material, Swingin' With Bud and Strictly Confidential is very, very good. I could go on but I think you get the gist of it. Have you read Paudras' book by the way? A classic.
  2. New specs? I'm having trouble reading this....
  3. The only thing I can say is (and it probably doesn't help much) that you're still relatively young and things will get better. I wasn't in great shape at 27 but am better off now. I know this is not too helpful but things will change.
  4. In this week's Sports Illustrated, in talking about Avery Johnson taking over as Coach of the Mavs from Don Nelson, it says "Johnson's inexperience will be tempered by having longtime assistant Del Harris, Charlie Parker and Larry Riley...." Bird Lives!
  5. Of any type, I'd have to say Revolver. For jazz, Bird's Savoy Dial Sessions.
  6. We're lucky to have a place like this and a very tolerant moderator like Jim.
  7. Yeah, if it's a Moose. Seriously, I'd probably give her a call, mostly out of curiosity. Just because the two of you are in different economic circles doesn't mean you have to socialize again. I once got a call from an old girlfriend where the parting wasn't on the best basis. We had lunch but that was it. I think we each got over the curiosity quickly.
  8. I think it's the nature of all boards. I've got a friend who's as much a Red Sox nut (no offense inteneded) as Dan and belongs to a board run by the Boston Globe (I believe). He says that Yankee fans like to go on there and make trouble and then the proverbial you know what hits the fan. It's not like you can control who joins. You'll get all kinds of people and some of them contrary by nature.
  9. What do you think of the Reisner book. I've heard people say that what he says in there you can take with a grain of salt.
  10. This is great stuff. Took me a long time to find this disc. Lucky Allen.
  11. Besides Ellington, Monk, etc., don't forget Charlie Parker, the Bird. His stuff is essential. But you'll get to it eventually. Have you checked out the Mosaic website (mosaicrecords.com). That will give you a great cross-section of some amazing music. I don't really have favorites. I love it all.
  12. Never really thought about a screen name but even if I had since I had the same name at the BNBB, I figured I'd stick with the same one so people would know who I am, in case anybody cares.
  13. Thanks for the feedback on the dance sessions. Doesn't sound spectacular but what the heck I'm ordering this anyway.
  14. Can some post some info about the Dance Sessions. AMG had no meaningful information about them.
  15. It's all pretty screwed up and I wouldn't mind it but for those screwed up cds. I'll just settle for getting the $99 plus shipping back. Early on in this thread, I said dealing with them wasn't too much fun. I should have listened to myself.
  16. 17. I hate to go both ways on this since it makes me look pretty indecsive but there may be a few but not many. A few years ago they released the Lost Sessions disc which, frankly, in my opinion, wasn't that good. Those were some sessions that probably should have stayed in the can.
  18. Dan, I was referring to the rejected sessions but in any event you may be right although except for those two sessions, nothing else rejected has, I believe (and I could be wrong), been issued. Somehow, I don't believe that the Blakey session could be that bad. This is probably a weird way of doing business but what if Micheal put on the Mosaic or BN site cuts from some of these rejected sessions and let fans vote on the quality. Not so much as the deciding factor as to whether it should be issued but as a factor in helping him decide if it should be issued. That might not be a bad idea.
  19. I could take the rust if the cds were in playable condition.
  20. Unfortunately, it is MC's decision that counts but I believe his view is that if it was rejected it shouldn't come out even though it may not be bad musically. I almost think it's a reflex opinion on his part. I'm sure that there are several rejected sessions that could be reissued such as the Art Blakey sessions talked about elsewhere. MC is looking to defend Alfred's place in history and not release material that Alfred didn't see fit to release. Not a bad concept but to adhere to it unflexingly doesn't seem to serve anybody. And what's wrong with Jazz Kat wanting to hear it. Absolutely nothing.
  21. I can't say I am or am not a big fan but I have the Lem Winchester album on argo and it's pretty fantastic. I think if you dig the Sounds, you'll dig this.
  22. I think I'd do the ebay route. Weizen just sold his and you may be able to get some people who really wanted the box or maybe you could ask him to do a second chance offer for you and you'd get the money quicker.
  23. Looks like your right about only getting a refund. I received the email but I will pursue. I'd like to get the replacement set. We'll see.
  24. Johnny Richards and Basie are musts for me. Don't really know Freddie Slack so I'll wait on this to see reaction.
  25. Still nothing about Basie on the Mosaic site. It's not unusual for companies to share sales in different spheres (sometimes U.S. sales v. International, for example) so some sharing here wouldn't be that atypical.
