COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The cases are declining in S Africa. Let’s be optimistic. -
ORNETTE COLEMAN - ROUND TRIP: ORNETTE COLEMAN ON BLUE NOTE

It’s hard to understand their thinking. Yes, it’s commerce but is that an evil concept. At least the albums are being made (although I’m sure there must be copies on Discogs). With the TPs they’ve established a name where it sells to a wide audience. I would have preferred to see the albums released individually but this way the set is guaranteed to sell. It won’t surprise me if some buyers break up the set and sell the individual records at a premium. -

It’s a Tone Poet set. No CDs, no downloads. -
COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In the US, we see this taken to the extreme. Instead of people acting for the common good, they act for themselves. “My body, my rights.” Really? What happened to everyone working together for the common good? I doubt even the founders would have agreed with this concept of freedom. That’s not freedom, that’s anarchy, nihilism run amok. The concept of working together seems to have gone the way of the Dodo bird. There is science — facts — and nothing else. It’s indisputable that unless the world gets vaccinated, mutations will continue to develop and each succeeding one seems more infectious than the prior one. -

Couldn’t agree anymore. Omicron is running rampant through this state but everywhere I go the number of people masked up are in the extreme minority. -

I just got around to listening to the set today and the sound is more than acceptable. Nothing wrong with the sound on the Billy Berg material. The Zorthian Ranch material is not terrible, certainly listenable. I purchased the LP set and there are a few pops here and there so the manufacturing process could have been better but not the end of the world. Getting back for a second to the question of whether Bird would want this material to be released, at the Onyx Club (or the Three Deuces, I forget which), Bird interceded with the management to allow Benedetti to record him so he obviously knew that the tapes would be available for listening.

It’s back now, fortunately. I was worried it was gone for good.

You have to tune it out. Maybe like Jim says, it’s a process. This is not a Bird recording but I have Barry Harris’ Bird of Red and Gold on Xanadu. Thought I had a terrible pressing but when I heard the memorial broadcast on WKCR on Saturday theirs was just as bad but the defects didn’t bother me because the music is glorious. You have to separate the two.

That was pretty terrific. WKCR ran a 12 hour memorial broadcast yesterday. I listened to a good part of it and they played selections from First Time Ever and Live at Dugs, which were unknown to me. They also played a 1975 interview with Phil Schaap, recorded during a Coleman Hawkins birthday broadcast. Lost a lot of greats this year.

Obituary by Mark Stryker. Barry Harris, beloved jazz pianist devoted to bebop, dies at 91
-
Indeed. He’s probably one of my three or five favorite pianists. He leaves an amazing legacy. 91 years young. RIP.
-
It’s impossible to know. Some artists do care, others don’t. Their legacies aren’t negatively affected by these releases. I’m glad I have the Benedetti. Bird’s playing at the Three Deuces and Onyx Club is quite strong

LF: Jimmy Cobb - JAZZ IN THE KEY OF BLUE

See https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?master_id=1227336&ev=mb Only two US sellers; the grading from one seller isn’t great and the other has a plethora of negatives.
