COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

Covid, what Covid? -
Good luck. I had assumed Jersey City wasn’t a bottleneck since things improved in this area but maybe not.

That’s a lot of records!

Just going by what’s on their site. See https://www.musicmattersjazz.com/the-sound-s/45.htm Also Michael Cuscuna is involved with them in some capacity.

Music Matters, which feature BN, are made using the original masters. Can’t speak for anyone else.

If you think that only people under 30 are interested in vinyl, you’re mistaken. I can only go by anecdotal experience but when I go to record shops, the vast majority are over 30. The same applies to estate sales.

Is enrollment in Express Scripts voluntary. I was under the impression it wasn’t.

But misses a lot of great music.

From frequenting the Hoffman forum, I see that prices being asked on jazz vinyl is very expensive. I watched portions of a YouTube video yesterday where the participants were discussing jazz vinyl and one of the repressing labels they mentioned was Music Matters. I looked at the MM site and prices were like $80 and up and most of them were sold out. eBay was even worse with prices in the hundreds. I’m sure the vinyl sounds great but unless you have a top audiophile system, can you really tell the difference. I’m quite content with a Japanese reissue or a RVG cd, or an older vinyl release.

$13 is a lot. Did you look at DG. They’re going to have it. Maybe eBay sellers in Canada will have it. -

Or Amazon US. -
Serena is running out of time. I doubt she will ever do it. I thought Azarenka was going to do it today but give credit to Osaka: she persevered.

On her website there was vinyl for parts of the cd set but it may be sold out now. Rhino also releases House of the Rising Sun on YouTube.

I mentioned this earlier but Boiler Room is very good and I actually liked it better than Wolf of Wall Street. However, the best one of all these types of movies is The Big Short. I’ve seen it several times. The late Anthony Bourdain’s explanation of a CDO (collateralized debt obligation) is classic. I saw Margin Call last year and that is excellent. If I had to rank these movies it would be Big Short Margin Call Boiler Room Wolf of Wall Street Wall Street

For those who may be interested, Rhino and Joni Mitchell are creating the Joni Mitchell Archives, a new series of boxed set releases that will feature unreleased home, live and radio recordings. The first release is a five cd set, the Joni Mitchell Archives, Volume 1: The Early Years 1963-1967. The collection begins in 1963 with her earliest-known recording (age of 19) where she performs “House Of The Rising Sun” at CFQC AM, a radio station in her hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Here’s a link to her website, Joni Mitchell Archives Volume 1. It doesn’t appear to be on Amazon US yet. The set will be released on October 30.

I’ve always had a balance in there from sales so I’ve never had that issue.

Any eBay transaction is a commercial one. Buyers do not get charged fees, only sellers.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

A new Hendrix set is coming out in late November: Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live in Maui. Two CDs of music plus a dvd of a documentary called Music, Money, Madness. “The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s storied visit to Maui, their performance on the dormant lower crater of Haleakala volcano on the island and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their controversial manager Michael Jeffery.” https://www.amazon.com/Live-Maui-Jimi-Hendrix-Experience/dp/B08HGP1BN9/ref=tmm_acd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1599743352&sr=8-2 Also available in vinyl. -
The Pandemic may cause jazz clubs to close. According to the following article, the Irridium in NY is likely to close and several clubs in Washington have closed. Governmental assistance may be necessary to keep jazz clubs in business. “The entire concert industry is struggling as the Covid-19 shutdown continues. But a genre rooted in live performance and in-the-moment dynamics is in particular peril.” Jazz Lives in Clubs. The Pandemic Is Threatening Its Future

I should have clarified that I meant the tracks on American Beauty, not the Port Chester concerts.

I’m going to pass on ordering the new one. As someone on Hoffman said, new mastering but no new content.
