weird... the petrucciani, galliano, lagrene and marcus miller sets are labeled as dreyfus but i can't find them on the dreyfus page; the miller contains the albums The Sun don't lie, Free, M^2, Silver Rain und Tales, most of which don't appear to be dreyfus albums (it says JVC Victor on allmusic)

funny chico comes up now... wondered earlier today about that often read statement, that von freeman never got as famous as his son chico... i am sure this was true some point in the 80s (?)... being young, far outside the jazz world (and hanging out in this vonski-centric place): is this still a valid statement?

french and german amazon still have reasonably priced copies... amazon.fr has many of the americans swinging in paris cds on sale for 9,45 Euro actually... the Lucky Thompson from that series is a big favorite (no overlap with the vogue and jazz in paris cds which are also great, but i like this on best)

don't have time to compare, listen.. right now, but this is one of the tracks from Joe Pass' appearance on Frank Evans' Frankly Jazz show, there are two tracks the audio is at least different and the announcements are still there so maybe Evans mentions the lineup (so far i only heard Gary Peacock on bass metioned - seems like that's all); read somewhere it's from 1962; seems like we need someone with sharp eyes and a good memory here!

seconded, i am really not following German jazz much, but this is a great record!

think i read four jazz books in the past year, Ashley Kahn's books on Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme I found cheap; both perfectly ok, the A Love Supreme a bit better, the Kind of Blue a bit worse... then I read John Szwed's Miles bio, which was great, favorite Miles book so far (i.e. compared to Nisenson, Troupe and Kahn); and then i did my best reading San Quentin Jazz Band although it was in French..., it's a weird book, relying mostly on criminal records; it's basically an endless story of jail, stole a piece of meat at the grocery store while out on parole, back to jail, released, driving without a license while out on parole, back to jail... some more interviews with contemporaries, discussion of records... would have made the picture a great deal more complete... but then, getting a collection of new biographical details for artists like Earl Anderza and Dupree Bolton was great....

another minor progress... found these bits on the net: by E.S.: and the second bit is significant since it relates the middle name Edward of the guy who played with Patton in the 60s and again in the 80s to the guy who moved to France... so unless somebody made a mistake or there are two drummers named George Edward Brown, they are all the same except possibly the guy who played with Stitt and Ammons [but since that guy played with Ammons (on and off?) from 1952 to 1961 he might very well be a different one...] ah, from an Ammons related Cadence interview in 1994, "a drummer named George Brown. They called him "Dude" Brown because there's a drummer from Indianapolis named George Brown. "Dude" Brown is from Washington, D.C." and here Dude Brown was 79 when he died so he was born in about 1920.

I was even supposed to be along when he interviewed Lester Young at the Hotel d'Angleterre on the Rue de la Boétie (off the Champs-Elysées avenue) but could not make it because I had to complete work on some damn highschool studies
