just got an email from my bass player cancelling a rehearsal two days in advance... but then we carefully chose a bass player who is a bit older than the rest of us (like 32 i guess) plus we allowed him to get pedals for his keyboard so that he doesn't have to play bass anymore...

here's a listing with an email address for booking him... http://www.jazzmasters.nl/tek3.htm and here's a list of records with a final one in 2007 http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_van_Enkhuizen haven't heard his albums... so all i can say is that i always liked rein de graaff when he turned up on albums... and here is a discography which ends in the midnineties http://homepage3.nifty.com/mrmanri/JoeVanE...izen/index.html

funny i haven't been close to horses in years but dreamed about a horse kicking and biting me three nights ago haven't visited this thread in some time, amazing contributions!

just finished (in english had read it in german before) Susanna Clarke - Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell the state of "English magic" is funnily reminiscent of the state of jazz, it has, so to say, become a domain of bearded collectors ("theoretical magicians" who cannot do any magic and say they do not want to), discussions about the whether it would be desirable to perform magic again, endless discussions about at what point exactly things started to go downhill, whether the raven king deserves a central position in the history of magic... of the over 1000 pages, 400 could be missing imho (notably everything which is not situated in england or is too closely related to world history, napoleon and all) but still i like it a lot; is wynton marsalis one of the bearded collectors? (was shocked to find out that at work i'm counted as one of those with a beard, will have to shave more regularly)

The saxist I play with - a great guy and player and teacher - knows Mobley, but I don't think he has one of his records. Simply too much music out there, the curriculum focusses on other players, and his personal models are other players with an edgier sound. On tenor, he favors Brecker for his sound, like most of his generation. my teacher's favorites were doldinger and bob mintzer iirc... (for my saxophone teacher on the other hand, the basics of learning to play tenor were hank mobley and dexter gordon ... took me a few years to realize that he was quite remarkable (non-mainstream in a good way) in that respect)

Help from a European member requested...
Niko replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
will do what i can, of course..., there's a deutsche bank here, don't have an account there but could ask if they could cash it ... no french connection here though; if you think it could help pm me the details and i could go ask there... -
chuck nessa used to be involved with uptown, there must be loads of discussion of various releases somewhere on this board you can browse and (probably) stream a good deal of their catalogue here http://www.lastfm.de/label/Uptown+Jazz/albums

definitely an interesting bunch of names... for examnple "KENT McGARITY: Trombone and Bass Trumpet. Kent played and recorded with Woody Herman, Dick Johnson, the Artie Show Orchestra and Slam Stewart, Jack Maheu & Salt City Six, Muggzie Gutt & His Matriculators and Paul Squire & the Orange Peels. Recently an original composition was premiered at the Idyllwild Jazz Festival." http://desertcitiesjazzband.com/id12.html where's Kent McGarity completing a frontline of don cherry and ornette coleman...? guess i have to check out Muggzie Gutt & His Matriculators

Which book did you buy today?

for canterbury bands there is also this site of family trees http://www.macgraphic.co.jp/ich/ wish they were easier to read but still... -
99% certain that the guy who directed my high school big band (he was also a regular music teacher... and he was perfectly competent at both ) had never heard of mobley when i mentioned the name...

bought another fine album with tuckey recently, philly joe jones "mean what you say" on sonet... (guess i was lucky finding it though)

thank you for everything! (btw, i've tried with two browsers, since the change of colors the right-most 25% of each photo aren't visible anymore (even scrolling is impossible...))

since my posting of berigan's avatar was deleted (and the rest of it was thoroughly unpolitical) i assume that means berigan isn't allowed to post outside the political forum anymore, at least with that avatar?
-
i feel a blog suits chris much better than a thread on a board... and a lot of the deleted stuff has already come back on the blog and i hope one day the ray draper material will also reappear in expanded form... day one without seeing the political forum for me - easily recommended! when in need of a cheap joke i've said "americans treat the words liberal and leftist as synonyms" a number of times lately, everybody finds it funny, so thanks for that...
-
And who might these nefarious rednecks be? I can think of one person who might fit that description, but that's about it. So one person has taken over the entire board? That one person is confined mainly to the political forum, so if it bothers you that much, don't go in there. And if you have no self-control, then I can make it so you cannot see the political forum at all. pm sent, would somebody be so kind and tell me when bixie is banned, think i'd like to switch back then...

ok, found my notes though not the cds: you can hear griffin for only two and a half minutes (within a seven and a half minutes version of body and soul) on the cd, this seems to be the only edenville recording, zoot sims is on one tune as well (but plays longer), a second tune from the sims session is on the parisian thoroughfares cd; wilen is also featured on only one tune iirc so the rest is trio... bud on bach is indeed astonishing just listening to the xanadu album "bud in paris" (on deezer) the same type of mixed bag, with wilen, griffin, trio..., first two tunes are duetts between powell and a griffin, wow! (not from edenville though)

there were some references but the blog sure deserves a bigger one! this blog sure is among the top three or four things to happen in my life in the last few weeks...

After reading this, I looked at the disc on Amazon. The one reviewer there gives conflicting discographical information for tracks 7 - 14; I wonder which is correct: "7, 8, 10: club tracks from "Groovin at the Blue Note" (1960). Powell is better on these. 9,11,12,13: club tracks from "Cooking at St.Germain 1957-1959. Powell is on fire. 14: "Body and Soul" from "Holidays in Edenville" 1964. A terrible warbling recording and a passionate but "off" Bud." 99% sure that the amazon review is correct... (some time ago that i looked through this carefully) the cd papsrus linked to is definitely a more complicated compilation than what brad describes (including eg a lengthy track with zoot sims)... again pretty sure that pablo reissued only part of the griffin material (22 tracks...) and that what they reissued is spread over this compilation and one called Bebop (but not the third compilation Parisian Thoroughfares which has eg some Barney/Dizzy material) jazzdisco is comparatively good on bud powell, but the three compilations are only listed (without details) at the very end.... http://www.jazzdisco.org/bud-powell/discography/ guess it breaks down to you either get the mythic sound set (no idea how difficult or easy or pricey that is) or you have to live with compilations... [not that the mythic sound set was complete... no overlap with the xanadu cd?, oh my god i'm confused] to say it clearly: the material on the pablo cd comes from at least four different sessions: Trio, with Wilen, with Zoot Sims, with Griffin... edit to add: read brads piece again, he also means this cd i guess, but it is a complicated compilation; recommended btw

the reissue program from concord does have the same tendencies allthough it's not yet quite there (no keepnews collections, just three rvgs, one by coltrane, one by miles one by rollins (or the like...))

Surprisingly, in view of my liking for the sons of Lester, I wasn't taken by The Brothers, but am much happier with Perkins and Kamuca, Tenors Head On. How do you find The Brothers? just about two-thirds through... the guitar players are not featured anywhere as much as i had hoped (but i guess buying a record with three leaders to hear the sidemen is a bit stupid)... but with the selection of tunes, the solos of the three tenors, and (mostly) the overall mood i am pretty happy - but then, this is essentially my first album with kamuca and perkins (dick collins "king richard the swinghearted" has the same three tenors have that one and probably love it much more - but not so much for the tenors...)
-
seems like only the enthusiasts remained in the reissue market and they need your money badly just give your money to chuck nessa (or to futuramarge, or nimbuswest...)
-
Nice Niko! Those are on the top of my want list too blue moods is so cool! had never been too fond of melvin sparks but he's amazing here... same for john manning (compared to that one melvin sparks album he's on...) now playing the chet baker - another real fine one, never thought i could like a baker album that's so heavy on singing that much...

had one of those in my hands yesterday... so they're good?
