Q: Why did Jesus cross the Road? A: He was nailed to a chicken. -
New album out next week. Duh.

These particular 3-CD versions seem like overkill to me, but on principal I can't really blame people for seeking these out - and other versions have been available for years - since they sound so much damn better than the "official" releases. EMI/Apple/Capitol should be embarrassed by what they have released.

Single mom fights back against the RIAA
RDK replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'll be curious to hear a reasonable justification for this from some of the proponents of free illegal downloading on this board... While I'm well aware the pitfalls of leaving it up to each person's moral compass to decide what is "right" and what is "wrong" - technically, of course, illegal is illegal - my own "indiscretions" are generally limited to d/l'ing live radio broadcasts or rips of oop LPs. In other words, things that aren't otherwise available. I know that doesn't necessarily make it "right," but for me the crime in that case is minimal - and in a larger picture sense the practice has exposed me to artists and albums I might never have heard - and whom I now support whenever possible. It's a trade-off, I think, for all sides involved in what has become - whether one likes/accepts it or not - a sea change in the music business. I can't honestly say such downloading is the reason or not, but I can tell you that I'm now spending more on music than at any time in the past. I can understand downloading live radio broadcasts, and even to a degree OOP lps. But...BUT....what about a situation like Chuck's describing above, where illegal downloading is over 7x the number of legitimate sales he's made? If he can't break even on his reissues, this sort of behavior surely hurts, and limits the possibilities for more catalog reissues. And we all lose. Well obviously that's something that I don't condone and don't involve myself in. I've run across such sites, of course, and always feel icky when I realize the blogger isn't "sharing" old LPs (which many seem to do out of a genuine love of the music) but instead "stealing" new CDs and offering them for free just because they can. I really feel for Chuck and other producers in such situations (especially in such a small, niche market as jazz), but like Jim said, you can't unring a bell and, like it or not, this is the future. As for the numbers (7x), I have a hard time believing that those are "realistic" sales - that is, I'd bet that few of those who opt for the "free" downloads would have actually bought the CD. Nevertheless, any lost sales are unfortunate. I don't envy any indie jazz producers these days (from a business standpoint that is). -

Clark Terry and Louis Bellson in Las Vegas 25 April

Damn. That's like having the Ellington band play a bar mitzvah. Wish I could be there. -
For those interested, this recently dropped on emusic.

The first disc (which, oddly, was one of my first experiences with Rollins) remains a favorite.

IT'S A GIRL, YAY!!!!! (Pt. II!)
RDK replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Congrats Jim! All my best to you and Allison (and Zora!). As the only guy in a family of four as well, you have my sympathies - but I can honestly say that it's not so bad. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?
RDK replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Solo - and that club he's playing usually is reliable with their information. The night after he's scheduled to play solo in Basel as well, so I guess he's on a small solo tour, I didn't check his website, though. Weston did play in trio w/Alex Blake and Neil Clarke - wow, this was one hell of a great concert! The three of them really enjoyed themselves, and Blake went berserk over his double bass (playing seated on a normal chair!), doing flamenco-guitar-like wild stuff. Clarke is a master drummer! Weston could have taken some more space for himself, but he, too, played great. They did the usual "greatest hits": Little Niles, Hi-Fly, Berkshire Blues, Blue Moses, Mystery of Love, African Cookbook, and one or two more, plus a terrific encore that he didn't announce and I didn't recognise (or rather I did, but couldn't identify). Knew you'd enjoy it, Flurin. I caught that trio about a year and a half ago and they were tremendous - one of the best shows I saw that year. Met Randy afterwards and chatted a bit too; had him sign my Mosaic select disc and he had a laugh over the "young" photo of him. I'm eagerly awaiting his next return to town. -
Analogue Productions Releasing 25 Blue Note Titles on SACD/Hybrid Disc
RDK replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Yeah, know what you mean. I get excited about these - the LPs too - but when it comes time to fork over the cash I usually think better of it. But there are probably a few titles that I don't have and a couple of favorites that I might sample to assuage my curiosity. -
Rockaway had a nice sale today. Picked up a small handful of CDs, a couple of HD-DVDs, and Dylan's "Modern Times" on vinyl. With any vinyl purchase they were giving away a "Record Store Day" promo LP and a free single. Good turnout too!

Analogue Productions Releasing 25 Blue Note Titles on SACD/Hybrid Disc
RDK replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Yeah, read about this at Hoffman's. Great news! I was interested in the vinyl series, but the thought of less than 10 min of music per side was troubling and these SACDs are twenty bucks cheaper. Still not too interested in double-dipping except on my favorire titles. Really wondering about the sound of Capuchin Swing, which was one of RVG's weakest. -
the 10 dumbest and smartest dog breeds
RDK replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm confused. Does being able to lick your own ass/balls make you dumb or smart? -
I remember that bit very well - for obvious reasons - and occassionally repeat parts of it to blank stares from the younger generation. Bob Dylan even references part of the gag in some lyrics on his "Slow Train Coming" album.
-
Yeah, he's very entertaining. Not the greatest voice, perhaps, but a good singer in a style that I tend to like. And I really love his attitude. He seems to care less - and be genuinely surprised - that he's even made it this far. Always seems a bit stoned and goofy; a breath of fresh air. Meanwhile, I'm in love with Brooke, who seems so genuine.
-
Damn. I lay on a couch like that, all I do is fall asleep.
-
Well since you asked... Favorites are Dave Cook and Brooke. Least favs (still left) are Archuleta and Carly. My girls cried tears when Ramiele was voted off a couple of weeks back.

Creed from "The Office" Was in the Grass Roots!
RDK replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
Completely irrelevant since U.S. and BBC networks operate so differently. So you're telling me that, even while liking the Brit Office better that you wouldn't have wanted more episodes of that version if you could have them? -

Just the opposite for me - I'm not a fan of the British Office, though I love the American version (and yes, I did see Gervais' version first). -
I'd be there if I wasn't 3000 miles away. Any foreseeable gigs in L.A., Frank? I've enjoyed your discs and would love to check you out live some time.
