I just figured it was the same people issuing the same stuff on differently named labels. Not true? gregmo

So, is this the first thread to reach 1000 pages?! Listening to this one. Good music and, for the first time in this series, interesting liners:

Back in the late 90s--think it was the late 90s--European Universal issued all the original Play Bachs on a 7 cd box set (Play Bach, Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Aux Champs Elysees on 2 cds). I was lucky enough to snag one at the time. I've always been fond of them. Not exactly earth-shattering music, but often lots of fun, as were his later efforts. RIP. gregmo

Can't go wrong with the great Mr. Five by Five!!

I do wonder if this set got grandfathered in before Sony announced they were no longer going to lease any material to other labels. gregmo

Well, since I was notably unhelpful to our new member in my own post, let me make up for it a little in recommending this url. It *looks* fairly complete to me: Nat King Cole Discography gregmo- 11 replies

Those are BIG booklets--actually large-format hard-back books. Listing all that would be a formidable undertaking!! gregmo- 11 replies

He did some lovely work with Paul Desmond and Frank Rosolino late in their careers. A wonderful guitarist. RIP. gregmo

Well, to be fair, it's been a long time since those were issued, but I agree that some sideman dates could make it up. I think they were just putting Jim off. gregmo

He vastly improved and revitalized this essential reference work. I always enjoyed his writing, including a LOT of liners! gregmo -

Actually, I have *never* seen one for sale at any price, but I really appreciated your post because I had no idea anyone had put it on Youtube. So I very much appreciated the opportunity at last to hear it! gregmo

Return Of The Film Corner Thread
gmonahan replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I got to see all the nominated Shorts at the Living Room Theater here in Portland--Docs, Animated, and Live Action. There are some really amazing pieces there, well worth seeing if you get the chance. gregmo -
Return Of The Film Corner Thread

Going to see ALL the Oscar-nominated shorts tomorrow. It'll take most of the day, but I'm looking forward to it! gregmo -
I ordered a bunch of them the day the sale appeared here on the Board, and I'm glad I did. Just wish those Max Roach albums had been there!! Still, thanks to Soulpope, I have put them on a wish list, so I'll keep looking! gregmo

Except that these two don't seem to be available from Jazz Messengers. Can't find them on the site. gregmo

Haven't seen anything on this here on the Board, so I thought I'd post the url. It looks like a good line-up this year. It all begins the last week of February: https://pdxjazz.com/2019-portland-jazz-festival/ gregmo

After Hours with Sarah Vaughan Columbia CL 660
gmonahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
Just to add to the craziness, the "Young Sassy" Proper Box appears to cover her Columbia material through 1950, but nothing more. It repeats most of the tracks from the Legacy "In Hi-Fi" release, but adds around 24 or so more. Chronological Classics releases stop in 1952, but, of course, Vaughan continued recording for Columbia through 1953. It occurs to me that the Columbias would have made a nice Mosaic Select box, though they might not have been able to fit all the alternates on one. Here's the last Classics cd: -
Mike has cleared up this fascinating little discographical mystery, but it did cause me to get out what I *think* (Jeffcrom will correct me quickly on this, no doubt!) was Cole's "first" 78 album on Capitol, simply titled "Capitol Presents The King Cole Trio" (BD-8). It's a typical four-78 album. No Latin jazz on it. Apparently, there were three more albums, and a tune titled "Rhumba Azul" did appear on volume 3 (also issued on 78). If anyone is interested, here's a view of the original:

I think all the Waller JSP sets are well worth having, but then, I'm a bit of a Fats fanatic! gregmo
