  1. Ditto. I did recently buy a used copy of Johnny Hodges "Don't Sleep in the Subway" because it's not on cd and it was the only Hodges Verve I didn't have. That's about the *only* reason I'd buy vinyl. (And my guess is that the Andorrans will probably reissue that one and "Rippin' and Runnin' as soon as both clear European copyright.) gregmo

    Budd Johnson

    Three accurate words. gregmo.
  3. One of my favorite singers. Playing one of my favorites by her right now. RIP
  4. I think so. All the LP-only sets are now OOP, aren't they? I think the Mulligan was the last to go. gregmo
  5. I really miss the days when we would spend time on the board speculating about the next Mosaic set, rather than continuing the sad list of sets going out of print. gregmo
  6. The thing I always notice when I watch videos of Buddy playing is just how much he really LOVED playing the drums. There seems to be real joy in the madness. gregmo
  7. Seems to me like $23 per disc is about average for an out of print Mosaic. I like it for the Teagarden material, and the sound is excellent. gregmo
  8. Agree totally with Allen. I liked the Davies effort, but this one blows it away...imho. gregmo
  9. Purely as a "buddy" movie, it works just fine, but it wants also to be a movie about race, and in that rather fraught area, I think it works a lot *less* well. gregmo
  10. More cool suggestions! Thanks! gregmo
  11. Hmmmm. I liked the performances a lot, thought it was a well made movie, but it was just a bit too pat for me, and I hated the ending. Sort of "Driving Miss Daisy" with the roles reversed. I could write more, but I don't want to spoil any of it for those who haven't seen it yet. gregmo
  12. Like a few others, I take the cds out of the boxes and put them on the shelves with my other cds. I keep the booklets on a separate shelf and store the boxes. I'm a lot more likely to listen to them that way, and a massive wall of black and white boxes would indeed look a little...somber! I didn't get all the Mosaics in the early days--couldn't afford it--and when the music later came out on individual cds, I often bought it that way (Don Cherry, Tina Brooks, Freddie Redd, Grant Green with Sonny Clark). In all those cases (except the Green, because it wasn't available) I was able to get the Mosaic booklets. The only sets I regret not getting were the two Vee Jay sets. I had the music on Blue Moon and got the booklets, but I think the Mosaic discs would have been better. I look occasionally at Ebay for those sets, but they're still silly expensive, so I pass 'em by. So it goes. gregmo
  13. Thanks for the suggestions! Yes, the choices for the alto are *many*, but I didn't know much cello, so I really appreciate those! As for the Uke, my third grandson was disabled by a play accident a couple of years ago. He can use his left hand, but the right is pretty well useful only for strumming--thus the Uke. Someone out there must have a favorite Uke band?! gregmo
  14. Ok, my three grandsons have taken up musical instruments, which is wonderful. The oldest, age 12, is learning alto sax. The middle one, age 10, is playing the cello, and the youngest, age 9 is working on the Uke. I'd like to get each of them one, maybe two cds for Christmas, preferably some kind of comp,, of music on their chosen instruments. Obviously, I'd prefer jazz, but I'm open. Suggestions?? gregmo
  15. Oh, I think we could have a whole thread on lousy albums that Creed Taylor made! But this one must rank right down there near the bottom. gregmo
  16. Bumping this one. Did we have a conversation about this thing in another thread?? Anyway, Evans completist that I am, I got hold of the 2008 Verve Originals reissue of it on cd. Oh my. It's almost entirely dreck. There is an Evans/Ogerman original on it ("Hollywood") that shows hints--only hints--of something better, but that is cancelled by a particularly dreadful version of "On Broadway," on which Evans sort of plinks at his piano as if it were trying to bite him. As others have noted, it wasn't included on the Rust Box because it was deemed to be without much value, and the fact that people realized that while producing a box which still (for me) holds the record as the ugliest-looking reissue project ever, its notes impossible to read, does say something! gregmo
  17. Nice article--thanks for posting that. It's very cool that the entire collection has been digitally preserved, though anyone visiting New York who hasn't been there still should visit the house in Queens. It's a nicely preserved site. gregmo
  18. Saw "Widows" and left unimpressed. Slower than molasses. gregmo

    RIP Roy Clark

Wasn't that Joe Pass's last album? gregmo
  20. Done here too. Thanks, Jim, as always. gregmo

    RIP Roy Clark

For all the lowbrow silliness on Hee Haw, the show could get interesting when Roy picked up an instrument. RIP. gregmo
  22. I was also a "Silver Age" reader and collector, deep into Marvel from the mid to late 60s. Still have 'em. I have to disagree a bit with Stefan Wood. While Kirby was absolutely brilliant, he felt (rightly) abused and under-recognized at Marvel, and tended to understate Stan's role. It was a partnership, and Stan deserves a lot of credit. RIP. gregmo
