  1. A nice Christmas present from my daughter who lives in France, some great swinging west-coast style sessions:
  2. I sometimes think (hope?) the same thing as I look at an entire wall of cds......... gregmo
  3. Nesmith is in his 70s. Gee, THAT doesn't make me feel old at all!! gregmo
  4. Nice harmonies, fair arrangement. Nesmith's voice...hmmm..... but it does show a fairly substantial musical awareness! gregmo
  5. He tells that story and others in "Billy Crystal 700 Sundays" on HBO. You can still stream it if you get HBO. It's based on a one-man broadway show he did a few years ago. gregmo
  6. They didn't, Hans, despite my begging them to do it in several nagging emails!! And I agree with Rooster--I'd take a legit release anytime over the Andorran stuff. gregmo
  7. Could be, Jim:
  8. Ah, one of our oldest discussions on the Board! I bought the Hodges stuff (which sounds pretty good, frankly) because Mosaic will never do a set. Why? Because the Andorrans have already reissued it. So, if you want the Hodges 60s Verves, you can either search for the old LPs or buy the Lonehill reissues. Verve will certainly never reissue it. To quote a line from the movie "Lion in Winter," we'd see the Second Coming first. gregmo
  9. As I read the obits, I got interested in her early Dot recordings. Several articles said she recorded for the label before she signed with Capitol. Apparently she did indeed record a single session with Rusty Bryant. I found one tune from that session ("Don't Tell Me") on an old compilation cd I actually had in a pile to sell (2-cd set "Jazz Divas" on Verve), so I took it out of the sale pile (!) and gave it a listen. I think she still shows her gospel roots on that tune, not too surprising since that's what she had been singing before she started her professional career. Apparently, that tune occupied one side of a 45 single with "Foot Stompin'," but the latter doesn't appear to have ever been reissued, nor have four other unissued sides with Bryant (according to Lord) made at the same session. There was a time when all that material might have seen the light of day on cd after the death of the artist, but I doubt that will happen now. On second listen, I hear more Country and Western than gospel. Definitely not your "standard" Nancy Wilson! gregmo
  10. I bet! Especially if it's in one massive 78 album! gregmo
  11. Happy, happy, there, Jim!
  12. That must be a pretty thick album!! How many 78s? gregmo
  13. Yeah, most of those are Japanese reissues. For some cultural reason I've never been able to figure out, Japanese buyers seem to prefer the original album *exactly* reissued. But with good sound, at least! gregmo
  14. Ditto. I did recently buy a used copy of Johnny Hodges "Don't Sleep in the Subway" because it's not on cd and it was the only Hodges Verve I didn't have. That's about the *only* reason I'd buy vinyl. (And my guess is that the Andorrans will probably reissue that one and "Rippin' and Runnin' as soon as both clear European copyright.) gregmo

    Budd Johnson

    Three accurate words. gregmo.
  16. One of my favorite singers. Playing one of my favorites by her right now. RIP
  17. I think so. All the LP-only sets are now OOP, aren't they? I think the Mulligan was the last to go. gregmo
  18. I really miss the days when we would spend time on the board speculating about the next Mosaic set, rather than continuing the sad list of sets going out of print. gregmo
  19. The thing I always notice when I watch videos of Buddy playing is just how much he really LOVED playing the drums. There seems to be real joy in the madness. gregmo
  20. Seems to me like $23 per disc is about average for an out of print Mosaic. I like it for the Teagarden material, and the sound is excellent. gregmo
  21. Agree totally with Allen. I liked the Davies effort, but this one blows it away...imho. gregmo
  22. Purely as a "buddy" movie, it works just fine, but it wants also to be a movie about race, and in that rather fraught area, I think it works a lot *less* well. gregmo
  23. More cool suggestions! Thanks! gregmo
  24. Hmmmm. I liked the performances a lot, thought it was a well made movie, but it was just a bit too pat for me, and I hated the ending. Sort of "Driving Miss Daisy" with the roles reversed. I could write more, but I don't want to spoil any of it for those who haven't seen it yet. gregmo
  25. Like a few others, I take the cds out of the boxes and put them on the shelves with my other cds. I keep the booklets on a separate shelf and store the boxes. I'm a lot more likely to listen to them that way, and a massive wall of black and white boxes would indeed look a little...somber! I didn't get all the Mosaics in the early days--couldn't afford it--and when the music later came out on individual cds, I often bought it that way (Don Cherry, Tina Brooks, Freddie Redd, Grant Green with Sonny Clark). In all those cases (except the Green, because it wasn't available) I was able to get the Mosaic booklets. The only sets I regret not getting were the two Vee Jay sets. I had the music on Blue Moon and got the booklets, but I think the Mosaic discs would have been better. I look occasionally at Ebay for those sets, but they're still silly expensive, so I pass 'em by. So it goes. gregmo
