I'm with Jim on the Hi-Los vs the FF, but most of the Hi-Los things have been reissued on Jasmine and Collectibles. I was interested to hear that the FF set sold well. I have no idea which Mosaic sets have sold well. Maybe that's why they're contemplating that Louis Armstrong Columbia set? About the only post-'59 "jazz" artist I can imagine who might "sell" would be, maybe Cannonball Adderley's Capitol stuff?? I suppose some kind of 70s Fusion set might sell, but most of that material is still in print, isn't it?? gregmo

Just played mine as well--no issues. Bunny does play an interesting "stop-time" solo on that track that might sound a little like there's a skip or two, but it's just Bunny playing. Thanks for getting me to get this one out. It's been a while since I've listened to it. gregmo

True enough!

My, my--do you find yourself changing all those things fairly often? That would seem to make listening to the records just a bit...time-consuming?! gregmo

Lonehill did at least do that, along with reproductions of the original album covers and liner notes (and even added liners on the "bonus tracks"). I'm not endorsing it, but if one wants the music...... And yes, we've had this conversation about a zillion times. gregmo

The Hodges/Davis things have been issued by Lonehill, which makes a Mosaic box a dead letter, alas. gregmo

While the pigs are in the air, we can also wish for a massive Gene Ammons Prestige box, but Mosaic hasn't ever dived into the Fantasy/Prestige/Riverside world, so that won't happen in my lifetime. gregmo

Alto, Cello and Ukulele? Looking for recs for my grandsons
gmonahan replied to gmonahan's topic in Recommendations
I ended up getting my uke playing grandson two discs by Shimabukuro, my alto playing grandson Bird's recordings with Strings and a Brubeck Greatest Hits compilation, and my cellist Oscar Pettiford's jazz cello stuff and a Pablo Casals disc (if he sticks with it, I'll get him the Alisa Weilerstein disc next Christmas, Jim!). Many thanks again for all the great recommendations. We'll see if they play them and like them. If so, there will be more to come! gregm -
I used to advocate for a Johnny Hodges 60s Verve set, but the Andorrans have reissued that material and screwed the pooch on a Mosaic set. I like the "complete label" sets (Savoy, Dial, Bee Hive). How about a complete set of Lionel Hampton's "Who's Who in Jazz" label? I think there are a number of buried treasures there, including Mingus's last recording on bass. gregmo

Return Of The Film Corner Thread

I liked the first 3/4, but it seemed to me the film changed tone too radically in the last part. And I often found the soundtrack grating, which, I guess, I was supposed to??? Fine performances. gregmo -
A nice Christmas present from my daughter who lives in France, some great swinging west-coast style sessions:

I sometimes think (hope?) the same thing as I look at an entire wall of cds......... gregmo

Nesmith is in his 70s. Gee, THAT doesn't make me feel old at all!! gregmo -
Mike Nesmith Sings Claude Thornhill

Nice harmonies, fair arrangement. Nesmith's voice...hmmm..... but it does show a fairly substantial musical awareness! gregmo -
He tells that story and others in "Billy Crystal 700 Sundays" on HBO. You can still stream it if you get HBO. It's based on a one-man broadway show he did a few years ago. gregmo

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
gmonahan replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They didn't, Hans, despite my begging them to do it in several nagging emails!! And I agree with Rooster--I'd take a legit release anytime over the Andorran stuff. gregmo -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
gmonahan replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ah, one of our oldest discussions on the Board! I bought the Hodges stuff (which sounds pretty good, frankly) because Mosaic will never do a set. Why? Because the Andorrans have already reissued it. So, if you want the Hodges 60s Verves, you can either search for the old LPs or buy the Lonehill reissues. Verve will certainly never reissue it. To quote a line from the movie "Lion in Winter," we'd see the Second Coming first. gregmo -
As I read the obits, I got interested in her early Dot recordings. Several articles said she recorded for the label before she signed with Capitol. Apparently she did indeed record a single session with Rusty Bryant. I found one tune from that session ("Don't Tell Me") on an old compilation cd I actually had in a pile to sell (2-cd set "Jazz Divas" on Verve), so I took it out of the sale pile (!) and gave it a listen. I think she still shows her gospel roots on that tune, not too surprising since that's what she had been singing before she started her professional career. Apparently, that tune occupied one side of a 45 single with "Foot Stompin'," but the latter doesn't appear to have ever been reissued, nor have four other unissued sides with Bryant (according to Lord) made at the same session. There was a time when all that material might have seen the light of day on cd after the death of the artist, but I doubt that will happen now. On second listen, I hear more Country and Western than gospel. Definitely not your "standard" Nancy Wilson! gregmo

I bet! Especially if it's in one massive 78 album! gregmo
-
Happy, happy, there, Jim!
-
That must be a pretty thick album!! How many 78s? gregmo
-
Yeah, most of those are Japanese reissues. For some cultural reason I've never been able to figure out, Japanese buyers seem to prefer the original album *exactly* reissued. But with good sound, at least! gregmo
