  1. Even at their most commercial, the Hi-Lo's are always fun:
  2. That's a good analysis, Jim. I think it captures how I feel about them as well. Adequate, ok, sometimes good, but always room for Sinatra to do his thing. gregmo
  3. Now and then we have the testimony of the losers to balance it out. gregmo
  4. The story on "Star Dust" is that Costa wanted to do a recording of it, but Sinatra demurred, saying he liked the Verse but didn't want to sing the more famous chorus, so Costa supposedly said something like "fine, then let's just do the verse," so that's what they did. It's lovely, though I wouldn't have minded hearing Frank do the chorus again! gregmo
  5. Yes indeed, and the others ain't low! gregmo
  6. Disc 4. Just recently acquired this one after having (stupidly) not gotten it when first issued!
  7. Yeah, let's NOT bring that one back! gregmo
  8. I'll sit with you and we can police each other!
  9. True that! But if anybody can play in that kind of style for a movie, I think it's probably Wynton. gregmo
  10. I just figured it was the same people issuing the same stuff on differently named labels. Not true? gregmo
  11. So, is this the first thread to reach 1000 pages?! Listening to this one. Good music and, for the first time in this series, interesting liners:
  12. Back in the late 90s--think it was the late 90s--European Universal issued all the original Play Bachs on a 7 cd box set (Play Bach, Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Aux Champs Elysees on 2 cds). I was lucky enough to snag one at the time. I've always been fond of them. Not exactly earth-shattering music, but often lots of fun, as were his later efforts. RIP. gregmo
  13. Can't go wrong with the great Mr. Five by Five!!
  14. Some Clifford Brown on this one:
  15. I do wonder if this set got grandfathered in before Sony announced they were no longer going to lease any material to other labels. gregmo
  16. Well, since I was notably unhelpful to our new member in my own post, let me make up for it a little in recommending this url. It *looks* fairly complete to me: Nat King Cole Discography gregmo
  17. Those are BIG booklets--actually large-format hard-back books. Listing all that would be a formidable undertaking!! gregmo

    Ed Bickert, RIP

He did some lovely work with Paul Desmond and Frank Rosolino late in their careers. A wonderful guitarist. RIP. gregmo
  19. Well, to be fair, it's been a long time since those were issued, but I agree that some sideman dates could make it up. I think they were just putting Jim off. gregmo
  20. Really enjoying this one:
  21. He vastly improved and revitalized this essential reference work. I always enjoyed his writing, including a LOT of liners! gregmo
  22. Waiting to see if I Hear any Clifford Brown:
  23. From the recent Jazz Messengers sale, very fine big band music:
  24. Actually, I have *never* seen one for sale at any price, but I really appreciated your post because I had no idea anyone had put it on Youtube. So I very much appreciated the opportunity at last to hear it! gregmo
