    Art Tatum

Nice piece. Thanks for posting! gregmo
  2. I'm bumping this one to see if there has been any more action with it. Can some of our friends on the European side of the pond tell us whether there is any new life in it? It's a great series! gregmo
  3. It's already listed as upcoming on amazon: Treasury Shows vol. 25 gregmo
  4. Thanks for bumping this one up, Brad. I had somehow missed it the first time. Caused me to go back and listen to a bit of Hank, which is always a good thing! gregmo
  5. The Amazon listing for the Fitzgerald chautauqua sets has a comment complaining that that it's an illegal recording--not cleared through the Estate. That surprised me as I thought Dot Time was a legit label?? (There are also complaints about sound quality.) gregmo
  6. Lately, this has meant tacking on an extra few weeks. I'd be surprised if we see the set before July, but I'd be delighted to be wrong about that! gregmo
  7. The Mosaic set looks like the Capitol Small Groups set. I moved mine six years ago, and it's only gotten bigger since. I'll join everybody else in wishing you good luck with it, Chuck! gregmo
  8. Going to see "A Quiet Place" tomorrow. I'm sure it will scare the bejesus out of me, and that I'll probably agree with Josh Pray's very funny video review: Josh Pray "reviews" Quiet Place! gregmo
  9. Thanks Mike. I took that cover pic off of Amazon, and it was way too small. Raeburn certainly had an interesting band in the mid-40s! gregmo
  10. Thanks for posting this! I checked, and it looks like the Cozy Cole sides were reissued on Classics: Edit to add that the Raeburn Guild material was apparently reissued by the reborn Musicraft label:
  11. Right--forgot that seventh tune. Too bad the Torme stuff hasn't been issued on cd, though I do wonder just how much jazz content there is there. Mel was doing a lot of pop in those early days. Didn't other people record for Guild besides Dizzy? I'm wondering if Musicraft (or anyone else) reissued other Guild things. Of course, as Chuck writes, it's all in the vast Universal maw now. Hopefully not lost and gone forever! gregmo
  12. I loved Tambor's fun with Malenkov, but everything I've read indicates that he wasn't nearly the doofus he's painted to be. He DID undermine Zhukov, and the general joined with Khrushchev to get him out of power in '55, but he had handled some pretty important things in the Soviet Union, and most who met him were fairly impressed. In the event, he outlived all of them, dying at age 86 in 1988.
  13. Thanks to Chuck and Ghost for the recs on Auld and Wilson. Some of the Torme things were issued on the first disc of a Proper Box. He also recorded with Shaw for the label a few times (available on a couple of the latter's Classics discs). The Joe Marsala sides might be fun to hear! Have those been reissued anywhere?! gregmo EDIT: I looked at allmusic, and it appears the six Marsala sides were indeed issued on Classics:
  14. Some helpful links here--many thanks! So, it looks like the period of "interest" to us for this label would have been 1944-48. I've long had the Ellington material (Have "Golden Duke" 2-LP set that Jim notes as well as "Jam-a-Ditty" cd on Naxos), the Gillespie Guild and Musicraft stuff on the (briefly) revived Musicraft label itself ("Shaw 'Nuff") and Classics, the Shaw things on Classics, and the Sarah Vaughan recordings in, of all things, a Proper Box! As far as jazz goes, that leaves Teddy Wilson and Georgie Auld? I haven't checked, but I imagine those would also be floating around somewhere on old Classics cds?? gregmo

    Musicraft

So, I was recently reading about somebody recording for the short-lived original Musicraft label in the 40s--may have been Ellington--and I got to wondering--who owns that original Musicraft material now? And what jazz musicians besides Ellington and Gillespie recorded for it? If there weren't TOO many of them, it would seem a good candidate for one of Mosaic's "complete" label boxes, like the Bee Hive and Dial boxes (assuming, of course, that Mosaic was sufficiently healthy to do it). gregmo
  16. Only once or twice?? Several times for me, and yes, I've also forgotten and bought the same thing a couple of times. I'm hopeless. Now then, what the hell was my name again? Oh yeah... gregmo
  17. This interview appeared recently on Mosaic's Sunday Gazette. I don't know how I missed it when mjzee posted it, but I did. I thought it was really an interesting interview, and that Rumsey was amazingly sharp for a guy at 90. Fun read, so thanks--very tardily--to mjzee for posting it! gregmo
  18. Listening to disc 1 as I write this. These 1934 solos are a very pleasant surprise. Wilson is all over the keyboard and a lot more aggressive than what we think of as his usual. Really looking forward to hearing more of this set! Luckily, I have discs 5 and 6, but I did check, thanks to warnings posted here! gregmo
  19. I just bought an HP M281 that is working well...so far. I was really sick of the huge cost of ink cartridges for inkjet printers. This one scans and copies as well as printing. gregmo
  20. I thought Jason Isaacs was particularly funny as Zhukov, but they were all good. Hope you all get to see it! gregmo
  21. Well, to answer Jim's query ("why do they make movies like this?"), the tragic/romantic jazz player has been a Hollywood trope for a while, going back at least to Kirk Douglas and "Young Man with a Horn." I'm not a trumpet player, but I think I read that Hawke did work on getting the fingering right. As for his singing, since I was never a fan of Baker's singing, Hawke sounded about as good to me! I thought this one was better--not *much* better--than the Miles movie. Hey, at least it didn't have a stupid/goofy chase scene! And a documentary on Bock might be interesting. gregmo
  22. Don't buy them unless he throws in the Buddy Bolden cylinders. gregmo
